Man I really hate this.

The '22 class had all the makings of a great class, but we are in danger of missing on 2 positions that we really could not afford to miss on. Safety and receiver.

We don't land Moore or Williams, that's going to significantly take away from the impact of this class, because it doesn't seem like we have any viable plan B's right now. Maybe Etringer at safety, but he appears to be a project, and I still don't feel good about our only safety prospect being a project.
Hopefully they're ready to hit the portal for a couple stop gaps...

Moore is listed as a safety and up until his decommitment, was the only safety in the class (however, Morrison is a guy who could potentially move to safety).

I believe we sold him on boundary CB when he committed. Who knows once on campus but that was the plan/pitch

Right, but ND wants him at corner, and I believe that is his preferred position as well.

Has anyone heard whether ND will start looking at undergrad transfers? Really limits the pool if not.

From what I keep hearing about ND re: the transfer portal doesn't have me optimistic. Basically that ND makes it next to impossible for non-grads to transfer in, which is still absurd to me that a high schooler has a 2.7 GPA and no extensive extracurriculars, no problem at all. But a freshman or sophomore who has a 2.7 GPA, can't do it.

I've mentioned that ND's attitude towards accepting undergrad transfers for football not only should change, it really HAS TO change. Not that they need to just regularly accept a dozen transfers, but essentially cutting off that resource entirely makes it so you have literally zero margin for error in recruiting and also leaves you incredibly susceptible to roster attrition if/when it happens. We could be facing a similar issue at receiver if we don't keep Williams and Walker in the fold (hell, we may see it EVEN IF we get them).

I can see it like what they have with the '20 and '21 commits, where they start out at corner and move to safety. Henderson was at corner until recently, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Barnes is moved there as well, if he hasn't been moved already.

Maybe Morrison can move back to safety, but whiffing on an entire position group is not something we can really afford, especially if we're already limiting our options in terms of filling that gap.

Not only that, but with the increased frequency of transfers now because of the portal, it is going to become common knowledge that ND can't get undergrad transfers in and kids aren't even going to consider ND. There could be a kid out there that is academically similar to Gilman and Prior, but ND never crosses their mind because everything they hear is that ND can only take grad transfers.

I think Watts & Henderson will be playing Safety the next 2-3 years with a possibility of others moving there too from the ‘22 class. Then the ‘23 class should have two more with Shuler & Bowen hopefully.
Hopefully ND won’t be counting on freshmen to man the Safety spot moving forward.

They sold him as being the next Sauce Gardner.

Since Kevin posted this KO return, I think he was my fav recruit in the class over JD & CJ.

Hopefully this is the last dark cloud in recruiting before Freeman kicks this shiit into hyperdrive.

One last look...

The writing was on the wall when he decommitted. There was no reason for him to decommit at that point. Felt like he was waiting for a reason to do so, found his out and used it. Wish him the best, wish he was at ND.

Correct, he allegedly had a foot out the door for months since he started getting interest from Tier 1 SEC schools. Walker, Moore, and Williams were ones people behind the scenes were iffy on well before Kelly left. Just a bummer if Freeman can’t close the deal because we badly need DBs… weakest position on the team moving forward.

What's so infuriating is that the three guys that were iffy are the three guys we really can't afford to lose.

And they're guys where grad transfers don't solve the problem. We need new blood or undergrads (which for some reason, ND will not bend to accommodate).

He had commitable offers to Bama and Florida when he originally picked ND

The more I look into this, the more depressing this gets.

This is a catastrophic loss for this recruiting class, both in terms of the quality of recruit and the insane need in the secondary down the line.

This has always been a Mickens / Freeman recruit? No way you turn these guys down unless you get cold feet and want to stay close to home.

Yea, it’s not good, but we’ll have to adjust. Freeman will get it right.

I don't think that they were actually committable, per what I heard.

That's fair, I don't have any inside sources. Was basing it off the fact he tweeted official offers from UF and Bama less than a month after committing.

Naples is a good 4+ hour drive if traffic is good. It may be in the same state, but it's definitely not close to home.

What's even more frustrating is that this is a kid who fits the ND mold, in terms of taking academics seriously (given his GPA).

I had hoped that him talking with Freeman, O'Leary and revisiting and meeting his brothers would remind him why he chose ND in the first place and what made it special to him.

Damn we need some good news in recruiting like yesterday.

Catastrophic? Not sure. He could be an elite CB. Mickey at this point will be the highest rated CB we have on roster. Riley was a .8992 composite. Outside of him, no other CB on roster was a composite 4 star. Morrison is. So we have 3 4*'s over the last two cycles. Not "wow", but certainly not catastrophic to lose Moore.

Don't sleep on Bellamy. His offer list was outstanding and I personally think he has all the traits. Simply put, the 3 CB's we have in this class are really talented, with or without Moore.

I like Bellamy and Mickey. I think they can be really good corners.

But Moore had the size and athleticism combination that those 2 don't have and he's also a guy who could move to safety down the line. I don't see that with Mickey or Bellamy. Maybe Morrison, but he also doesn't have that prototypical length and athleticism combo. Hard to find 6'3 guys who can move like Moore does.

It's the flexibility that hurts us and the concerns at defensive back really called for at least 4 and missing out on Nwankpa, we are starved for potential safeties.

Agree, he has great traits. But I think saying catastrophic is being a bit dramatic.
