Go back and watch Akroyd on the weekend update.

Only 61. Way too young. Apparently he's been battling cancer. RIP Norm.

Love Akroyd, one of my favorite SNL alums that hit the big screen. Norm has always been my favorite Weekend Update guy though. Norm wasn't a great sketch comic away from the Weekend Update desk unlike Akroyd, he's not known for many characters other than his Burt Reynolds on Celebrity Jeopardy, but he's definitely one of the best to be behind the desk.

Seth Meyers did a tribute yesterday, he talked about how Norm used to say SNL was great because it was one of that last places on TV where you could still bomb. If SNL was doing a bad show and the audience wasn't into it you just bombed and there was nothing you could do, but he had just as much fun doing a show when it was bombing as when a show is going well. He would deliver his lines and just stare out into the crowd and you'd have to laugh at the uncomfortable moment, you felt the connection as he unflinchingly performed. I'm paraphrasing of course, Norm just had that unique delivery and comedic timing.

I'm sure a lot of people have seen this, but this is one of Norm's many classic late night moments. He basically hijacks an interview and it made the show infinitely better:

This one is pretty good too, Norm did this a number of times to Conan:

Jane Powell, Hollywood’s Girl Next Door, Is Dead at 92

Typecast from the outset, she was a star of movie musicals before she was out of her teens. But her big-screen career peaked when she was in her 20s.

Sept. 16, 2021Jane Powell, whose pert good looks and lyrical soprano voice brought her Hollywood stardom before she was out of her teens — but whose movie career peaked when she was still in her 20s with a starring role in one of the last great MGM musicals, the 1954 extravaganza “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” — died on Thursday at her home in Wilton, Conn. She was 92.

I remember that All Star game when Rose plowed into Fosse. RIP Ray.

Ray Fosse, catcher knocked over by Pete Rose at 1970 All-Star Game, dies at 74
By The Associated Press
OAKLAND, Calif. — Ray Fosse, the strong-armed catcher whose career was upended when he was bowled over by Pete Rose at the 1970 All-Star Game, has died. He was 74.

Carol Fosse, his wife of 51 years, said in a statement online that Fosse died Wednesday after a 16-year bout with cancer.

Fosse was a budding talent for Cleveland when he made his first All-Star team as a 23-year-old in 1970, the same year he hit .307 with a career-high 18 homers and won the first of two Gold Gloves while throwing out 55% of attempted base stealers.

Rose barreled over him to score the winning run in the 12th inning of the exhibition at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium. Fosse fractured and separated his left shoulder, and he told The Associated Press in 2015 his body still ached 45 years later.

"As much as it's shown, I don't have to see it on TV as a replay to know what happened. It's fresh," he said.

A first-round draft pick by Cleveland in 1965 from Marion, Illinois, Fosse made his second and final All-Star team in 1971 but never replicated that terrific 1970 season over a 12-year career with Cleveland, Oakland, Seattle and Milwaukee.

He batted .256 with 61 homers in 924 games, and helped the Athletics win the World Series in 1973 and ’74.

After his playing days were done, Fosse became a popular broadcaster for the A's beginning in 1986, and he worked through part of the 2021 season.

“The Oakland A’s are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Ray Fosse,” the team said in a statement Wednesday. “Few people epitomize what it means to be an Athletic more than Ray. He was the type of franchise icon who always made sure every player, coach, colleague, and fan knew that they were part of the A’s family. We send our deepest condolences to Carol, Nikki and Lindsey, his family, and friends during this difficult time. We’ll miss you, Ray.”

Fosse told the AP in 2015 that he had pain and arthritis, endured five knee surgeries, had two bum shoulders he never had fixed, and a stiff neck.

Fosse was one of many “what ifs?”. IIRC, he & Rose were friends & actually ate dinner together the night before the game.

Betty Lynn, Thelma Lou on ‘The Andy Griffith Show,’ dies at 95

Lynn died peacefully Saturday after a brief illness, The Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, North Carolina, announced in a statement.
By The Associated Press
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Betty Lynn, the film and television actor who was best known for her role as Barney Fife’s sweetheart Thelma Lou on “The Andy Griffith Show,” has died. She was 95.

Lynn died peacefully Saturday after a brief illness, The Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, North Carolina, announced in a statement.

Lynn appeared as Thelma Lou on the show from 1961 until 1966. She reprised her role in the made-for-TV movie “Return to Mayberry,” in which Thelma Lou and Barney got married.

Born Elizabeth Ann Theresa Lynn on August 29, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, Lynn began studying dance and acting at a young age. In 1944, she started performing as a part of USO Camp Shows.

Lynn took her talents overseas, performing in the USO for servicemembers during World War II. She was “thought to be the only American woman to have traveled the dangerous Burma Road during the war,” according to the museum’s statement.

She moved to New York in the late 1940s and began acting in film, and later, television. Her career spanned decades, but fans came to know her best for her role in “The Andy Griffith Show.”

Major respect for Powell. RIP.

Once again confirming how much of a dumpster fire it is, Twitter had opposing opinions about Powell today. They want to blame him for the Iraq war and the civilian lives that were lost as a result. No mention of the hundreds of thousands that died under Saddam's reign, a reign we ended.

What Iraquis had to say about the ousting of Saddam: https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/06/10-years-after-saddam/277362/

"it's important to understand where we started from. ... Literally hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were sent to mass graves. Ten years on from the demise of Saddam Hussein, we're still discovering mass graves across Iraq. And Iraqis are better off without Saddam Hussein—the overwhelming majority of Iraqis are better off without Saddam Hussein."

Salih acknowledged that the contemporary reality is grim: "This is a new experiment in the Middle East. I don't want to whitewash the many missteps and the terrible things that happened in the country to date. ... I'm not telling you that it is a utopia and all is fine and wonderful." And yet:

... for those of us who lived under the tyranny of Saddam Hussein and understand what tyranny means, ... the difficulties of today, the pains of today, and the disappointments of today—and they are very profound, because Iraqis deserve better—these pale in comparison to what we had to endure. ... Then, people had the certainty of the knock on the door late at night, and could possibly end up in a mass grave. Two weeks ago, in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, a new mass grave in which there were some five-six people who were shot. Their families never heard from them since 1988. They were found and they could only be identified by the pajamas they were wearing as they were taken from home. These are the type of stories that my people, my community, had to endure.

Sad to see Colin Powell passed away

One of a handful of people that I respected in politics. Sad day but a life well lived for sure.

I'm coming off a 3 week, breakthrough case (sorta) of Covid and it's no joke. Completely different this time around compared to last May when I had it.

Me as well. Sorry to hear. I was the complete opposite. The first time I had it I was knocked out for a few weeks. The second time was nothing for me. Glad to hear your doing better.

I was lucky enough to attend one of Powell's speeches on Leadership about 15 years ago. What a great speaker - very powerful and inspirational. RIP

Paul Salata, creator of Mr. Irrelevant Award, dies at 94
Paul Salata, who created the Mr. Irrelevant Award that honors the last selection of the NFL draft after playing football at USC and in the NFL and Canadian Football League, died Saturday. He was 94.

He died of natural causes at home in Newport Beach, California, a day before his 95th birthday, nephew Nick Salata told The Associated Press.

Although the NFL draft dates to 1936, Salata created the Mr. Irrelevant Award in 1976. The player and his family were invited to spend a week in Orange County enjoying activities, including a trip to Disneyland and a golf tournament. The honoree received the Lowsman Trophy depicting a player fumbling a football. Kelvin Kirk of Dayton University was the first to be given the title as the 487th pick that year.

NFL HOF'er Sam Huff passed away. Played for the Giants and Redskins. Coached by a couple of HOF coaches, HOF career almost went sideways before it ever began.

Huff's first NFL training camp went poorly, to the point that he left the camp after he failed to find a position where he could play. As the Pro Football Hall of Fame recounts, he was eventually coaxed back by a Giants assistant coach by the name of Vince Lombardi.

Huff later found his position thanks to one of the most significant tactical developments in NFL history, the institution of the 4-3 defense under Giants defensive coordinator and future Dallas Cowboys legend Tom Landry. Landry moved Huff to the middle linebacker position, where he would soon star as a rookie.
