Might've just cost the Cowboys the game by hitting Big Ben in the facemask on 3rd & 10. Right call. Dumb rule. He knows better.

It’s shocking to me how low it’s gotten for him. I think the Cowboys fan base wants to run him out of town. Think he had a big penalty earlier as well. Pains me.

Low? Pretty sure he's tied for 1st for most tackles in the league with another 7 today.

Smith seems to be the whipping boy of Cowboys fans. A quick peak on one of their forums and there are multiple threads calling for him to be cut. It’s crazy to me because he is so universally loved by ND fans. Dallas fans, not so much.

Dang sucks. He is a really good guy and has been through a lot. But that part of the gig being a pro athlete in high visibility teams like the Cowgirls, Yankees, Notre Dame or any team from Phily.

Saying that, I think we can all agree Jaylon has not fully recovered from the devastating injury. He may be like 75% back. And to this day I still stand by my statement that it was a dirty play by Taylor Decker, completely unnecessary late hit.

Since he's tied for most tackles, I'm guessing it's coverage where he's struggling. IDK.

All I know is the Dallas games I've watched, he's been fine. The talent around him is so bad he's drinking from a fire hose constantly. Just looked at snap counts and he's got more snaps than anyone on D, and another 49 on STs... I mean WTF.. 38% more than the next LB. And I think Dallas is in nickel more than not, so he's more often than not 1 of 2 LBs, and with the highest expectations at WILL.

If I were him I'd get the hell out of D.

To be fair 39% more snaps than the next LB is a bit miss leading. Dallas has had injuries LB. Leighton Vander Esch is a very good Line backer, pro bowler level, but he has only played in 5 games...well 4 games and change.

I just think his instincts are significantly below average and his athleticism doesn't make up for it in the NFL. Such a shame because he's my favorite ND player of all time.

Fred Warner of the 49ers is basically who I thought Jaylon would end up being.

Dallas fans are a sorry lot, and that team can't seem to find success since the Jimmy Johnson days ended. They've had a lot of talent at times but can't seem to put it together. I thought Martin and Jaylon could help that team reach new heights, but Martin is out right? Bad year for the Dallas defense to suck around Jaylon.

He made a pro bowl last year and probably will this year. He just has the unfortunate honor of being the captain on a sinking ship.

Watching a few Cowboys games this year, Smith is the least of their issues. The one thing I will say is he looks a tad slower than last year, and hasn’t taken the best angles. Yesterday he was responsible for a couple of bad penalties.

I didn't know he was the 49th all time recruit in the 247 composite. He was such a freak before the injury. Still a good player but it's evident he's not quite the same. Hopefully he gets back on track this year for my Cowboys. I'd love to see all 3 LB's (LVE, Smith, Parsons) succeed but it seems obvious that one of Smith or LVE will be gone next year.

I know it's Twitter which is a cesspool, but Jaylon tweeted something the other day and a bunch of Cowboy fans were all over him like, "Spend less time on social media and more time working on your tackling." Like WTF? I might be a bit biased, but was Jaylon not #2 in total tackles in the NFL last year? He's led the team in at least the last 2-3 years as well. Cowboys defense gets a bad wrap, deservedly so, but at what point do you blame the guy doing most of the work? Surely there's far weaker links on that defense that they should be trolling. You can't even reason with these people when you bring these facts forward.

He honestly isn't the best LB in the past year or two, and as Lucky points out he or LVE will be gone after next season. His showboating is a little too much, especially when your team is down 28 points in the 4th quarter. He's unfortunately not a fan favorite here in Dallas.

Part of an article comparing Jaylon and Vander Esch.
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2021...uable-contract

While statistically Smith is hands-down the better of the two, is that really the case? Those of us who have spent a lot of time watching game film know that a lot of Smith’s tackles come from clean up efforts where he’s had to chase down a runner after they’ve gotten passed him. Is it fair to punish Vander Esch for missing all those tackles when he puts himself in better position to at least attempt the tackles in the first place? Maybe not, but it is fair to acknowledge he’s just not making many plays for the defense.

Verdict: Smith might be a little better than we give him credit for, but both of them did not play well last year, and as far as which player is the better of the two - it’s too close to call right now.

Yeah, I've seen those fans complain about Jaylon's celebrations. It's like some of these people have never played a down of football before. I don't see how you can compare the two LBs numbers and say Vander Esch is the better long term bet. Bloggers, man...

I'm sure there are 29+ other teams that would like to have him. Hopefully the Cowboys find what they want.

Football is played with emotion. As a fan you probably don't want to see a celebration when your team is down 28, but that energy can be infectious when you're on the field. It can help pickup the others around you. If the Cowboys cut Smith loose I don't see how their defense gets better, I think he's still a net positive on that side of the ball. They need to look at other positions.

Jaylon's injury clearly hurt his ability some. But to say he is a liability is crap. Is HE going to be a hall of famer that's unknown. But he is still a good football player that numerous team would love to have. Social media has made a lot of internet tough guys.

I think he's a victim of his own celebrity. He's probably the most visible player on a defense that's notoriously awful and so the fans lash out at him first even if he's far from the weakest link.

Wondering if some bad story is about to break, or he’s just been that bad. Cowboys still owe him 7.2 million.

Gotta be something. The fact that he’s owed the money and it doesnt help the cap situation at all.

Last year was his only bad year per PFF. He’s currently ranked 11th among LBs this year. I think the injury obviously derailed him a bit, but he’s for the most part been a quality LB.
