Not sure why so many people keep bringing this up. Unless the entire BOT leaves and ND becomes a football factory, Urban will NEVER be the HC at ND. Way too much baggage and issues.

Baggage aside, Urban is supposedly making $12m in Jacksonville.

That's not happening at ND.

Barton hinted around this for a while before he was hired, that they believe Vandy athletics have a chance if they commit to it. Not surprised to see this shortly after their hires

I would imagine that Lea had something to do with this. Good input as he's coming from a school with a number of similar restrictions that shows you can do it if the commitment is there.

IMO, Lea is part of the overall effort. Lot of money in Nash and Vandy has more boosters than you'd think. The school itself has a lot going for it. I'm just surprised they haven't gone more in before.

Yeah and what's weird is that Vandy is really, really competitive in other sports. It is strange that they have been consistently terrible for their entire history.

Wife went to school at Vandy. Mind you it was the 80’s but there was little or no interest. Show up part way into the second quarter gone before the fourth. The parties were exceptional, but the desire to leave and go to the game not so much. Great town. Prospects seem very bright. Hope Lea is their Saban

Yup. Not sure if it was just a case of them looking at the SEC and saying "we have no chance" (at FB), or what, and just packed it in all those years. IMO, they have the location, and resources to go full hog if they want. Not saying they'll attain top 10 type consistent status, but they can absolutely raise their program significantly if they wanted.

Some history that’s a fun rabbit hole to go down. The original SEC had GA Tech and Tulane. GA Tech left the SEC after a feud with Bear Bryant but many thought were just always going to de-emphasize athletics. Tulane just did that, de-emphasized athletics and didn’t like where football spending was heading. This is unconfirmed, but some have thought I read that Tulane believed Vandy would follow them in being “better” than the rest of the SEC. Vandy of course never followed, GA Tech landed in the ACC and Tulane was left in history.

As the resident Vandy guy this is exciting. I've always thought we should have a top notch basketball program, football is going to be a bit more challenging even with this money coming in.

Wasn't GT was an independent for about 20 years between the SEC and ACC? Want more fun? Check out the Southwest, Pac 8, Big 8 and WAC conferences.

Franklin was making some headway before he bailed, so it's not impossible to elevate the program.

The ending of the Southwest Conference saga is fascinating. Politics, fueds, money, could be a great movie. Probably is one.

Good for Clark Lea. Vandy has taken a beating in the SEC this year from some of the top dogs, but managed close games against Missouri & South Carolina. I doubt Vandy will make a bowl this year, they finished off their season with home games vs Florida & Tennessee, but it's nice to see that he's moving that program forward step by step.

I want Lea to succeed at Vandy. But if he ever got fired and returned to ND I would love to see a Lea coached defense with Freeman’s players

Man I remember those Lea defenses. They didn’t always start strong but you knew the halftime adjustments would be elite and that the defense would slowly constrict the life out of opponents like a snake.
