It was almost like they filmed an extra hours worth of scenes they would have included in the finale last season if they could have made it 2 hours long, but instead they just decided to use the scenes as the first episode this year. Bran not being in the episode further supports that theory. Made no sense.

I'm staying hopeful this episode was used to prime the pump, so to speak. Hopefully the rest of the season is a firehose of plot twists, deaths and of course heartbreak.

Didn't last season start out really slow? We were like four episodes in before anything really big happened, if I'm remembering correctly. And once the doors got kicked open, it was a pretty epic season.

I actually liked the episode, and I hated last season. Was a pretty good set-up episode for the rest of the season. The Dorne plotline still makes no sense and is badly written. Dorne is a big country with their own lord structure, economy, and customs, the sandsnakes killing the king and then just taking over makes as much sense as if Ned Stark just killed Robert in the first episode and sat on the throne and was suddenly king. It don't make no sense pawl.

My theory is that D&D are intentionally trying to make the viewers hate Dorne and all of its characters, so no one gets mad when it gets mostly cut from the show. It's so bad at this point it's comical. "You're a greedy bitch" or whatever the fuck that terrible line was. Also how did the sand snakes get onto the boat? Also why would Jaime leave his only piece of leverage alone on a boat in the harbor? Also Dorans guard, his name is escaping me, getting killed by one stab from a 120 girl was ridiculous.

Don't forget Doran's presumably most loyal guards just standing there watching. I mean obviously the chicks must have cut a deal but they did not plan to kill him at that exact moment because the note about Myrcella triggered their assault. They were waiting for him to find out about her death before they did anything to him. So it was somehow an impulse kill but plotted very carefully at the same time. Makes no sense.

Well they are succeeding, which is a real shame because I think Dorne is a fascinating opportunity. It's dumb enough that the boat with Jaime didn't just turn around as soon as Myrcella was poisoned because its really obvious who poisoned her and why. It's not like they were hundreds of miles away. They had barely left the harbor.

I also agree that they are going to try and wrap up the Dorne plot hastily and pretend it never happened. You can tell simply by the total lack of a budget for those parts of the show. Like I said, Dorne is a big country and all we've still seen of it is that one garden.

Did Doran need to exist in the show? Myrcella? Trystane? I feel like the only purpose of Dorne was for the shock value of seeing Oberyn's head crushed in.

Doran's story in the books is much more interesting. They just butchered it badly on the show.

They basically used Dorne for the reason you mentioned and to give Jaime and Bronn something to do for the entire season. So no, it wasn't necessary, but if handled better it could have been great.

That's the best case scenario now, right? Everything good about Dorne has either been already cut, ruined, or killed. Hoping they go all the way so we can focus on the story arcs that are still interesting.

While we're bitching, I groaned a bit during the scene where Brienne rescues Sansa and Theon. The soldiers' shields bore the Bolton sigil, which undoubtedly was meant to help viewers identify them as bad guys, but they never bothered to equip them as they engaged Brienne and Pod in mortal combat.

Another thing....I'm no scientist but I think if you walked in water that was ice cold, your legs would go numb before you made it across the other side. Maybe I'm wrong but seemed ridiculous to me.

Same. Their lower extremities would have been covered in ice crystals after crossing the river, and hypothermia would have killed them both in a very short span of time.

That's exactly what I said while watching it. Not sure how they'd be able to continue on, at all. However, like stated previously, we are talking about a show that has dragons, wargs, and an undead army. So, thinking about everything from a logical standpoint, might not be useful.

If you were planning to see tomorrow, you picked the wrong room. We all die today. I say we do our best to take Thorne with us.

That gave me chills. All and all good starting point.

I hope YouTube (or BuzzFeed or the Internet as a whole) comes through with a comprehensive "this is how the shows and books are different" primer before we all dive into Winds of Winter. I don't mind the changes for the show's sake, but it's become more and more difficult to keep track of where the plot and characters stand in the books and the show at the same time.

Also Brienne and Pod being right there at that exact time was a little coincidental for my tastes.

Well also what was the point of them crossing the river at all? Theon says it's to escape the hounds, which is smart. However if they aren't going to escape anyways what was the point of having them cross it at all?

I really don't find too difficult. We do it with a ton of other media. Either comic books, video games, TV, and movies. None of them follow each other completely. Now if Winds came out tomorrow it would be a different story. Trying to read a new book while watching the show would be a pain in the rump.

While I think it's kinda funny debating how realistic the hypothermia risks are in a show based in a mythical world with dragons, I will play.

They could survive wading through the water. The water is above freezing (obviously... It's not frozen) and they are running (accelerated heart rate, etc) and they have a large amount of adrenaline. The entire scene was less than 10 minutes. I fell in a river fishing in January once, filling my waders with ice cold water with an air temp in the teens. I ran the mile or so back to my truck and was fine. It took me more than the length of the scene, as I was wearing waders and running through the woods.

Here's some facts.

Well to me there's a difference between fantasy elements of a universe and illogical writing.

The existence of dragons, magic, etc. does not also mean that basic science, math, whatever no longer matters. 2+2 still equals 4 in this world as far as we know. And I doubt they have waterproof thermal shoewear and legwear in this universe so it doesn't make sense.

That's true, and I was going to add to my post above that if Brienne and Pod found them relatively soon after the crossing, then they'd likely survive. But wasn't there a PoV break between the crossing and the Bolton soldiers finding them? I got the impression some time had passed between those two events, which made it less plausible.

And you don't even have Stark blood running through your veins, so I'm sure they would be fine.

Like I said, I'm not a scientist, so if you claim it's possible I'll take your word for it. But I found it pretty weird that Theon did not even seem to be phased by walking through the water. I get that he has a high pain threshold at this point but I think he would still have trouble walking.

Think so? I used to be very tuned into the ASOIAF discussion boards and whatnot, but I don't think I could tell you all the details of the Pink Letter, the Iron Bank, the Grand Northern Conspiracy, the politics of the sellsword companies, Littlefinger's plan with Harry the Heir, the faceless men in the Citadel, or Quaithe's prophesies.

Well, as all of us dudes know, the worst part of getting into cold water is when it reaches your crotch...

And in Theon's case.... Well... You know....

I agree, and this is just me personally, but I've stopped trying to argue with some of the illogical things that take place. Though its hard to do.

Ha....the whole Theon getting his unit chopped off bothered me a lot because that does not happen in the books and he is one of my favorite characters. He has some serious redeeming qualities after starting off as a huge asshole. I think he is fascinating in general. I've wanted Theon and Sansa to hook up in the books and we know that's not er...possible... in the show so that kind of sucks.

When the Bolton guards catch up to Sansa and Theon, one of them says to Theon, "I wonder what Ramsey will cut off you next." I got a good laugh out of that one.
