Huh? Wha? Are you drunk piano player or just referencing the difference between my use of the common American English "gray" and your use of the more common in the UK "grey?"

Tenth Anniversary

Tenth Anniversary

Since the end of this year will be the tenth anniversary of joining Irish Envy, I've been reflecting on the early years, long-time posters, and its evolution.

I wanted to give a shout out to those posters who joined IE before me and continue to contribute regularly. Here's a big thanks to them in order of dates joined.

Anyone care to give a brief back story on IE? Who are the OG mods, etc?

Thanks.

BGIF can give a great, more detailed, breakdown I'm sure...

The OG team was ran by the gentlemen who started the site... His tag here was Svoboda and I believe that account still exits under a different name. JiggaFini, Queens and others led the first team of moderators, they made a great team but the site was still rather small with little traffic.

The turning point came when IE and it's owner got in trouble with some of the subscription sites about posted content and such. The original owner sold the site, the new owner wasn't even a CFB fan and the site went downhill quick. There was no admin here at all and the few moderators left turned on the site, Queens actually deleted a bunch of recruiting profiles and threads just out of frustration... after a few months (off memory) the new owner finally stopped by and saw the state that IE was in and knew it needed some form of moderators and admins (The majority of the OG team pretty much left with the OG owner) and he pretty much at random picked a user to run the site for him and clean things up.... but without having any knowledge of things he picked a random MSU fan who posted here... that didn't sit well. To the credit of said MSU fan (TonyTiger or some such) he actually took the job half way serious and went about finding serious mods... he picked LoveMyIrish, Jason Pham, GoshenGipper, Myself, Irishfan... though I think it's fair to say we were undermanned and somewhat unprepared for the overall job at the time.. there was a lot of bad blood about the transition from the original owner and the period of a couple months were there was almost no moderation or control,... we tried to turn the site around, we created a number of giveaways and such and tried to actually bring some moderation back to the site though our style(s) were admittedly more lenient than you see now.

Obviously GG passed away, Tony Tiger moved on after continued heat for being an opposing fan and JPham took up his job... Myself and other mods grew tired of the job and handed it off to others like BGIF, who over time also grew tired and handed it off to peps like LAX and CO... and here we are today. Site is stronger and seems better run than ever.

Fun Fact: The site is now owned by a group of two/three Longhorn fans... (Unless there has been another sale I was not aware of).

Thanks Acamp. Very interesting.

I stumbled upon this board via a direct link on the ND message board on ESPN.com. Instantly got hooked. I think this is probably the best ran message board I've been a part of.

Mind boggling that Longhorn fans own the site (unless it's been sold, like you said). I don't know squat about purchasing website domains. What does one cost? Like if this site were to be sold today, what would it go for?

Sites can go for a couple hundred bucks to thousands. Depends on the advertising revenue.

Which I believe is driven mainly by site traffic...

btw, on UT guys owning the site, I didn't throw it out there as a bad thing,... I mean, really, who cares?? It's just an interesting note... I forget how or why, but I interacted with a couple of them over some such years ago... they seemed like good peps.

Somewhere in some thread not to long ago someone linked a site that estimates the value of a website based on its traffic. IIRC the value of this site was in the low to mid $20,000s
However I thought it was owned by some OSU fan (s)

Very cool. Thanks guys.

I agree that it doesn't matter who owns it. I still feel it's the best ran message board I've taken part in regardless if owned by pro-ND peeps or not. Kudos to the mods too.

I guess I could see it mattering if the owners were active on the board AND from another fan base... but no owner to my knowledge has taken an active role since the first owner who was/is a die hard ND guy.

Exactly. Possibly just an investment play.

OK, without blowing my cover...

I used to own some sites similar to this in a different vertical so i understand the space. When I joined in '14, I did a quick Alexa search and a few other stat site lookups and got mid-upper teenK $ values. The site is probably generating $30ish/day in G Ad $. So at 2x revenue the sites worth @ $22k

Also, the last I saw it was owned by WM Media. The founders are Northwestern and Cornell guys. Could have sworn the company was registered in Israel last I checked but something just came up with a rural TX address. That's my 4 min assessment.

SO the current owners bought the site several years ago in anticipation of the Texas vs ND games and have used our vast knowledge of ND football to scout for the 'Horns and their revenge game this year.

It all makes sense now...

And the plot thickens....

It's only a matter of time before IE has a Netflix special made about who it's real owners are and what their real motives might be.

I NEED a 30 for 30 on this site... I didn't know the history and after reading the brief description I found it very interesting...
