This sounds worse and worse as it goes on, and sadly may go beyond football to the point where he can't even fully enjoy a life of leisure on weekends. So awful.

I need Doctor James Andrews to give his opinion before I worry. Thats what ESPN has taught me over the years.

After watching that video I think it's pretty clear that I have no idea what I'm looking at. Looks good to me.

Oh my gosh, it's worse than I thought. His injury has him frozen still while it projects "Browser does not support video playback" in front of him. This is spooky scary shit.

I'm trying to see what I can find out. Like I said when this first happened a guy that played basketball here at my college had the same type of nerve issue and didn't play for 2 years then ended up his last year at a D3 school. I'm still really concerned with how it's progressing because I was told initially it was just like the basketball player I mentioned.

Nerves only grow back / repair themselves at 1" a month. Not sure how where exactly the nerve damage is, and how far up from the end it is, but it could be years before it's fully heals. If it ever does.

That seems pretty quick to me. How much of the nerve was damaged?

I don't know. I severed a nerve in my elbow, and damaged the other. They told me my arm being 18" from elbow to finger tip, expect 18 months until it was even remotely close to normal at the finger tips.

Well how close were they or are you still rehabbing?

Mine was back in 2004. I saw a specialist out of state considered one of the top in the country, if not the world. It took me 6 months to regain even a sliver of feeling and movement from the severed nerve and several years to get it to 50% function. I would imagine mine was considerably worse than his. I was just told that once the damage was fixed, or nerve reconnected, it would basically have to repair itself from that point to the end. In some instances you lose your muscles memory on what you would consider and everyday normal function and need to retrain simple motions and tasks.

Well Jaylon on one leg is still vastly more athletic than me on 2.

Hurts my heart to see this. He was one game away from being a top 5 pick in the NFL Draft and now we may never know.

Prayers to you Jaylon!

Insanity is spot on. I had to have some nerves cut and reattached. Mine was in a different place than the elbow, but it took about 8 months for mine to regenerate. Back to 100% after that. Peyton Manning is another example. Took him well over a year to get some resemblance of strength back.

I think there is a chance for Jaylon to get his opportunity, but it sounds like it will be next year.

Once in a generation talent that may go to waste b/c of one play.

It's not always just about the $$$$

Ok?

I said it was sad. Clearly referring to the possibility of him never being able to play the game he loves and have his life altered from here on out.

He left school early to fulfill a dream though and money is part of it. He has an insurance policy that will help him throughout the rest of his life (in a way that the NFL could have). So me asking is relevant to the conversation.

Edit: A Few Thoughts on Jaylon Smith's Injury and Insurance Policy - One Foot Down

I just don't see how he can go undrafted. There will be a team in the 6th/7th round that takes him if he's not already picked. At that point you're reaching anyways.

I'll bet all my vbucks he is drafted somewhere in rounds 1-4.

Agreed. The success rate of a typical 3rd/4th rounder is so low, there is no way a team will think of this as a wasted pick if they take him there. Some team with a stable HC/GM situation will gladly take a chance on him early. His potential is just too high for him to last too long, especially given his 0 off-the-field issues.

I'd also like to stop the F*** Taylor Decker talk. He pushed Jaylon in the back after the play. He didn't go after his knee. It wasn't a big hit. It wasn't just a late shove. It was a freak injury. There are all kinds of plays after the whistle which are much, much worse.

And I don't see how he drops below the end of the Third Round. He's a lottery ticket around pick #100 for a team with playoff talent. I'd love to see the NY Football Giants take a shot. They need impact linebackers and I'm willing to wait a year or two for this one!
