Anyone know why FSU is a big player in this one?

according to loy he believes we are leading but not by much....in looking at other team sites on 247, steve lorenz from the michigan site said in sources he spoke to that are involved in his recruitment the top 3 he is highest on right now are Florida State, Wisconsin, Michigan...

I think Dillon is probably a little bit down on the pecking order at Notre Dame. That's not to say he isn't a good ball player, but he has limitations that about 5-6 other guys don't, who ND is in good shape with. If Notre Dame takes Dillon, I would imagine they would have to take a second RB in the class too.

If you can land a JK Dobbins, Ty Chandler, Trey Sermon, etc, then you don't have to take a second RB in the class, unless the plan is to move Dillon to LB, which is an entirely separate discussion.

Of course Lorenz would say that - he's bitch-made. Pure Michigan.

When the low hanging fruit is a 6-1, 230lb legacy with a 117 Sparq as a junior that gives you flexibility to be standout on either sides of the ball, you make that a priority over guys who are your standard total ifs.

As much as I like Ty Chandler, he's just a better version Dexter and Deon at the same age.

AJ Dillon brings the Irish a physical skill set they do not have in house... a REAL big back that's also very athletic, not a 215lb Tony Jones who is being billed as one.

“It means a lot to me,” said the 6-foot, 228-pound Dillon. “The fact that they don’t really recruit up here, because they don’t need to because they have a ton of guys down south, the fact that they reached out here means a lot. I’ve been talking to coach Graham for a while on Twitter. We’ve developed a relationship. It was really nice to see that they view me as someone that they thought could have their program out.”

“He thinks I’d be a really good fit in that offense and what they’re trying to do,” he said. “He sees me as a really good back that he’d like to us in his offense. I see them as one of my top options, if not the top.”

“I wouldn’t say I have a clear-cut leader,” said Dillon. “I’d say there are a couple schools bouncing around that are on my list that are higher than everybody else but I haven’t crossed anybody out yet. I’ll cut some schools off in the next couple weeks. I’m looking to have a top five before I go into my season then do some official visits around Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don’t think I’m going to go all the way to Signing Day.

“Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa are probably the ones that come up most often,” Dillon said. “Virginia Tech and Virginia come up too. I’ve been down to Virginia a few times and I really like the campus but I haven’t been since they got the new staff. I talk to them via Twitter.”

I agree Dillon adds to the power game, but his feet, agilty and and athleticism are a concern. I have always been a big fan of Dillon, but there isnt a huge difference between him and Tony Jones. Dillon's skill set isnt anything Jones doesnt being to the table.

Measurables say otherwise by a significant margin. An FSU offer IMO backs up those numbers especially considering Jones didn't receive an offer and he was the featured back at the premiere HS showcase in the country... just down the road.

...and this is no knock on Tony Jones, I love that he's part of the program.

I mean if Florida State thinks he reminds them off Jacques Patrick, I don't want to miss out on that. Even if he isn't quite as good as Patrick, Dillon is BIG and one of those guys could be a difference maker.

He may not profile that different than Tony Jones but he seems like someone we need to lock down (and figure out later where he fits).
Kid's a legacy, with a good academic background, from a part of the country we recruit well in. Oh, and he's a highly-athletic four-star power back. Let's not lose him to FSU while we chase a bunch of maybes and not-gonna-come-here's, huh?

So what you are really saying is that we should prepare for Dillon to commit somewhere else, we then whiff on our top wants at RB and then have to take a 3:s: back. Awesome.

ETA: and get nowhere near 85 scholarship players.

This is where I'm at. A lot of people say offer Ali-Walsh as well, but I'm not keen on that because I don't see one specific tool that stands out. Perfect program fit? Absolutely. When it comes to Dillon - I see a kid that can thrive between the tackles and push defensive players backwards when they try to tackle him. ND doesn't have that right now.

I am in the boat of offering Walsh, just not at this stage. Walsh can play RB, but also slot and impact the return game. However, there are other prospects better than Walsh.

I was in the boat of offering and throwing the sink at Dillon to commit until I really dug into the RB class. 2017 is extremely deep and Dillon is a fine player, but Notre Dame has a good shot with some elite backs.

As far as the 85 scholly limit, I am down, but it's a lot harder to sell another elite back on coming when Dillon is committed and four other backs are on the roster with 3+ years of eligibility remaining. The only way Dillon commits is if he is sold of not playing LB and telling another RB that Dillon could switch is entering murky waters.

But with that said, ND has to take another RB if they take Dillon.

So any word on if he is ok with playing LB?

Personally, I like him as an ATH and I'd bring him in today if that were the case. However, I'm about 60/40 that, as of today, I'd start him at LB

I'm not a scout obviously but I think Tony Jones is a little better then Dillon despite the FSU offer. Jones is a little better laterally and really explodes accelerates through the hole quickly even though he doesnt have great top end speed. Dillon probably has better top end speed than Jones. I'd like to see Dillon against the talent Jones played at IMG because he is bouncing right off those Massachusetts kids.

I think you have to take Dillon. He's a terrific athlete who could play 4-3 OLB or RB.

Thank you... the million dollar variable. I sucks that we have to rely on Sparq #'s to try and differentiate between players. If anyone needs to go to IMG, it's not the kids from TX, AL, GA or MD/DC it's the AJ Dillon's, Tarik Black's, Jack Coan and Avery Roberts of the football wastelands in the Northeast.

To combat this, I think the Catholic Church should start a national boarding school that is equal parts IMG & Culver Academy. They could put it in NW Indiana so that Notre Dame and the Congregation of the Holy Cross could help oversee the endeavor since they have always done a fantastic job promoting athletic excellence across a wide range of sports while also promoting the Catholic experience.

I'd call it OMG Academy.

'17 MA ATH AJ Dillon (Offer)

I would push hard for this kid. Next Jamal Lewis.

Did you know coming out of high school that Jamel Lewis wanted to goto UGA. But, that Jasper Sanks was the higher rated player and Georgia chose him over Lewis. Lewis ended up going to Tennessee. How did that workout for Georgia? Did the rankings get that one correct?

I really like Dobbins and Dillon together. I think we can afford it. And it could be devastating.

One of the successes of Holtz's teams of yore, was the fact that he could put a fresh running back in every quarter, with little if any fall off in production. (Until the 4th quarter when he put the Rocket in and it was bye-bye, baby!)

"One of my top schools ! Great tradition, school , program and my relationship with the staff has been growing."

Irish great Thom Gatewood (grandfather)is joining him

"I've always knew about academics, I saw football last time, so now it's more about the atmosphere , the campus , how the players feel kind of trying to get a general feel of the place," Dillon said.

ISD/Freeman had an update last night. Said Dillon definitely felt the love and is sure he got the offer on merit and not bc of who his grandpa is, and feels strong about ND wanting him. Update said he is built like a MLB.
