What is his plan? Is he staying in school or is he finished with his degree and taking a job? Will be an interesting guy to follow.

My guess is Mustipher at guard, Hoge at center, Big Mike at LT and Bars at RT.

He's taking some big job in DC that he couldn't turn down. He said his heart just wasn't in football. This was the news that Driskell couldn't release late last week.

Bivin might be the next man in at LT. Maybe shift Bars over to RG?

Bivin has worked his ass off this offseason and is looking for the starting job. Would love to see Big Mike move to LT and Bars to RT. Let Sam, Bivin and McGovern battle it out for RG

This is what's right with college athletics. Good luck Steve and congratulations to the Elmer family, you raised an exceptional young man.

Nothing wrong with someone using their athletic talents to further their career outside of sports, especially since there are so many that attend schools that take advantage of student athletes' talents with less regard toward their education. Steve is the embodiment of a student athlete and since so few make it to the pros, kudos to him for making good use of that education and good luck to him.

Just read the letter he wrote. I'm constantly impressed by the young men who choose to attend Notre Dame. Best of luck to Steve, he's got a great future ahead of him.

Nice article. (in case this has not been posted) A Notre Dame man.

Notre Dame OG Steve Elmer plans to graduate early, end football career

“While playing football for Notre Dame has been nothing short of an honor, I have been presented with an incredible opportunity to pursue a career doing something in which I have great interest, and at a great company to boot. The experience of balancing Notre Dame’s academic rigors with my football commitments has given me a great foundation for my next endeavor."

“I realize that this may be considered sacrilege to some, but it’s truth. What I do love, and where my heart will always be, is the University of Notre Dame.”

Way to go Steve. I'm sure your parents are proud...and I for one love it when kids can do cerebral and physical. ND kind of guy. Would have loved to have ya one more year leading the Notre Dame Trucking Co., but am really happy for ya.

Damn best of luck Steve!

I still stand by what I've said previously that he could have been a 2/3 rd pick in next years draft

good luck to Steve; smart enough and self aware enough to know it made no sense for him to stay (like he said) his heart wasn't into football anymore. it happens. cant play this game at this level not wanting to be out there.

I'd like everyone to consider something..........

Think about how hard it is to graduate from any school in 3 years. That's a constant heavy load of classes. Now consider the additional burden of doing that at a University like Notre Dame, where there are really no "gimme" classes. Now consider how difficult all of that is, while playing for a major D-IA team with tradition and pressure like those that exist at ND. There's no way this kid was spending 50 hours a week preparing for Stanford, Clemson, Ga Tech, or Ohio State. So the next time you are frustrated by the seeming inability of the offense to get off to a fast start; maybe instead of bitching about how everyone and everything sucks, you should take the time to wonder how many of these kids are trying to manage an academic load like Elmer must have had to manage? We all want to be proud of rooting for a program that takes the student part of student-athlete seriously. Steve Elmer is a fine example of that, but he's probably not the only one. And no one can be everything to everyone. Something has to give.
