Top Five Defense
1. CB Darnay Holmes: The Calabasas (Calif.) corner is undersized at 5-foot-10, but the ultra-explosive athlete stayed attached to receivers all day long. The receivers threw an array of double moves at Holmes, but he never bit, running the route step for step.
2. DE Robert Beal: The Notre Dame pledge was flashed the quickest first step in the entire camp. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound prospect was not all speed off the edge, he mixed in some power with a bull rush against offensive tackle Tony Gray.
3. DT Marvin Wilson: The Bellaire (Texas) Episcopal product was a nightmare for offensive linemen to handle. At 6-foot-4, 315-pounds, he showed surprising quickness during one-on-one reps. There appear to be very few holes in Wilson’s game.
4. DT Tyler Shelvin: The LSU commit was nipping at the heels of Wilson for the top interior defensive lineman on Friday as both have very similar styles of play. The 6-foot-2, 330-pound prospect also gave offensive linemen fits with a surprisingly quick first step.
5. S Isaiah Pryor: The Ohio State commit is an extremely athletic prospect on the back end of the defense who was able to covered a lot of ground at the safety position. Pryor flashed good instincts, diagnosing pass routes quickly.
So interesting message board talk. Strong word at 247 is that Robert's sister is applying to ND and that will go a long way in bringing Robert to ND. Sounds like people are optimistic that it occurs.
Isnt he committed? It sounds like he is planning on coming he just wants to take visits just like Tillery did?
I said nothing off him not being committed or taking visits. He hasn't signed an LOI yet and stuff can change. There are no plans of it but his sisters admission could play a role.
His sister is said to be a legitimate candidate for ND admissions.
Am I wrong, or is there another connection with Beal and ND? Doesn't he have a grandparent or someone that lives in/around the South Bend area? I understand the trepidation, (after all, I am sure that most of you had to take a break from bagging on Joe Schmidt), but I thought there was more here than just the DE from the south committing to ND. Not saying it is enough to hold him, but maybe it is just like Tillery as someone said.
Grandmother worked at ND and currently resides in South Bend. He visited on April 8th and seems to really like ND early. His tape for a sophomore is very good.

I wouldn't view it as a bad thing. It's actually a huge positive as it's the potential to further solidify the commitment of one of the best DE's in the entire country
That is interesting. I think most people underestimate how difficult it is to get into Notre Dame as a regular student. It's an elite private school with less than 13k total students. I hope she has a real academic profile that matches the school's standards. A lot of really good students get denied, put on waiting lists, etc before actually getting accepted. I'm sure his grandmother understands this and hopefully she has given some guidance to Robert's sister.
Which brings up the elephant in the room... Should admissions consider not only her Grandmother's past employment, but also the fact that her brother is committed to the school? I would argue Yes... But probably not why you think. I believe that admissions also looks at whether a student would be able to handle the rigors of the school. I would argue that her grandmother's understanding of the culture, her close proximity and her brother also attending would all be evidence of a strong support system.
This board would implode if she's denied...
So is this ND's version of a bag man?

#16 OVERALL-247
What I got from that, is that we can expect him to arrive at ND at 6'1 215 pounds?
It's going to be funny how disappointing this class is going to end up. Everyone originally talking about Epensa, etc. and we're going to get 0% of those players.
Not surprised by this. I was surprised he committed.
