This thread will be open for 48 hours. If you want to post about why you voted the way you did feel free to do so. However this thread's sole purpose is to determine what criteria will be used to determine if a player enters the IE Hall of Notre Dame Men.

1) Is a player eligible for the Hall if they did not earn an undergraduate degree from Notre Dame? [VOTE YES OR NO]
-this means anyone who transfers or goes to the NFL prior to getting their degree is ineligible.
-this would also eliminate 5th year transfers such as Cody Riggs or Avery Sebastian as they presumably obtained their undergraduate degree at their original university

2) Is a player eligible if they were suspended for at least 1 full game? [VOTE YES OR NO]
-If you would make an exception for any reason you should vote "eligible"

3) What is the minimum percentage of votes needed to be elected?
-50%, 65%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, 95% [ VOTE FOR ONE OF THE 7 CHOICES]

4) Should there be a minimum number of votes cast or should polls be open for a certain amount of time?
-Minimum Votes (30)
-Minimum Votes (50)
-Minimum Votes (75)
-Minimum Votes (100)
-Poll open for 48 Hours
-Poll open for One Week
[Vote for One of the 6 Options]

5) Should votes be public? [VOTE YES OR NO]
-If you vote "Yes" you want to know how other specific IE members voted.

Vote for only ONE of the Choices per question number. You should only make 5 total selections

You can delete this post later but I thought everyone was up for a revote after we established some sort of criteria?

The previous criteria was "a mod decides they want to change the player's title." You missed Te'o and Martin either way.

Absolutely that is the plan. I just wanted to put down the ground work so everyone knew what it would look like/how it would operate.

We may even need a subforum for "Notre Dame Hall of IE Men," that way this thread and all debate threads can be found in the same place.

I also plan on sprucing it up a bit and making it look a bit better than just hyperlinks, but I'll do that once votes/re-votes have begun.

I think you need to break it into decades starting with the 60's or 70's. List years as a starter, accolades won, significant achievements, etc..

OK are we using this thread to establish the criteria? I propose 90% or more in favor. There is no other criteria but suggested factors that people should consider are:

1) On field performance: Objective accomplishments (All-American, Heisman votes, Award winner, statistics) and subjective (do you think he is a great player)

2) Leadership: team captain? respected among teammates and coaching staff? leader on the field?

3) Off-the field: was this player suspended for any reason? Was the player a valuable member of the community? Was the player a mentor for a younger member of the team?

4) Special circumstances: Did the player overcome a significant injury? Did he overcome personal issues such as loss of family member?

5) General considerations: Did the player graduate? Did he stay four years? Did he stay 5 or 6 years? How do you feel about this person subjectively? Have they had success in the NFL?

Those are just off the top of my head. My hope is that people don't just vote for all the players they like. If we are going to give special recognition to players, there should be some thought given to whether the player is deserving of special recognition. This isn't supposed to be for every player. It should be those that went above and beyond.

We can establish our criteria here. I planned on keeping the OP updated with profiles for each player that passes the vote, to act as the actual "Hall." We can also keep track of proposed votes and results here via links, once the process is ironed out.

You need to have a poll to decide what percentage gets you in and the minimum number of votes!

I think a minimum of ~30 votes sounds right. Some of our IE Award threads for '14 got close to 30 total votes, meaning that would be the majority of the "most active" posters, I think.

My first though is 25 "YES" votes out of 30 gets you inducted?

Can we just add a poll to this thread and delete it later? If we can't delete it we can just start a new thread for the original purpose of this one....

I agree the percentage should be fairly high, but 90% may be a bit too high. Yes it should be special, but 90% is really elite - 75 to 80 works for me.

I mean the vote for deciding the criteria haha

In other words we add a poll to this thread for 48 hours with the following options:

50%
65%
75%
80%
85%
90%
95%

We can't delete a poll once it's posted, so we can create a separate thread to vote on criteria. I'll move all of these posts there once one of you does that lol.

After that, I'll just use this thread to create a unique post for each player that has passed the vote.

I think these points all line up with a concept I have in mind when thinking of a "Notre Dame Man" - is he an "ambassador" to the university? Some of my ND heroes, like Jeff Burris, were always talking about what a special place ND was to him, and how they hold the school and the people they encountered there deep in their hearts. Those were the comments that made me want to go to ND too.

One can be an ambassador while at ND, and/or after leaving - but, IMO, those who publicly offer and exude that love for the school, and the concepts it embodies, should get some extra consideration for "Notre Dame Man".

ARTHUR: Please, please good people. I am in haste. Who lives
in that castle?
WOMAN: No one live there.
ARTHUR: Then who is your lord?
WOMAN: We don't have a lord.
ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarchosyndicalist commune. We take
it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.
ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified
at a special biweekly meeting.
ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,--
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?
ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.

There's a way to do it, it works during Envy voting. People are able to select multiple users in those polls.

I say no strict criteria besides "has concluded all eligibility for Notre Dame"... let the people's votes fall where they may.

Vote for only ONE of the Choices per question number. You should only make 5 total selections

I think that failing one criteria should not disqualify a person completely. I think that those guys who fail one criteria (Jerome Bettis is NOT an ND graduate; Ricky Watters and Tony Brooks were each suspended for one game) should be able to be voted upon, but should be required to have a higher percentage of votes. So if the standard for those who meet all of the criteria is 65% of the vote, then make those who fail one(and only one) of the criteria require 85% of the vote.
