So confused by this recruitment. Seems like a smart kid, says all the right things about ND to certain parties, but doesn't give us the time of day with others.

I can't tell if it's the cold, a cover up, or what.

If you want to understand everything that is wrong with Notre Dame recruiting, it's that you can have a kid DESPERATELY want to go to Stanford despite never visiting... yet if that doesn't work out, he's totally cool with an SEC football factory.

A lot of kids believe in what we have to sell, but we clearly swung and missed here.

We just need Stanford to stop being good at football for awhile. We aren't going to 'beat' them at academics, at least when looked at crudely (US News). We beat them in terms of Catholic education, which may or may not matter to a recruit. Alas, they have a stronger claim to the "perfect balance of academics and football" pitch right now. Plus Stanford doesn't average 25 degrees and two feet of snowfall in January.

Yeah, this is the biggest issue. And that they somehow hide the fact that they have zero fans and zero fan support.

That's one of the things about ND that is unique: it is basically the only school in the country that is (1) US News top 25; (2) small and private (3rd small P5 student body); and (3) has big fan bases and tradition in different sports.

This is a football/basketball attendance chart (original here; note that the data is several years old and I added lines at 95%): <a href="http://tinypic.com?ref=24ec86u" target="_blank"><img src="http://i67.tinypic.com/24ec86u.png" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>

This is a modified version including only private schools. Notice anything?

agree 100%,,, but... they perform, and they seem to see a lot of national coverage. so, does every athlete care that there aren't a kagillion crazy fans dressed as trees? I'm sure a lot do, but some see the education, on the field results, and NFL success and just don't care all that much. a lot probably would prefer weather to a kagillion fans? maybe?

They actually get very little coverage. How else does someone like Christian McCaffrey put up the kind of statistical season he did and not win the Heisman? Had McCaffrey done that at any other school he runs away with the award.

I don't fault anyone for the choice, but exposure generally matters for athletes. That's why big market teams attract free agents, and why things like "branding" matter. McCaffrey has 45k follower on Twitter, Henry has over 100k. Kevin Hogan -- a 4 year starter with multiple conference championships -- has 5k followers on Twitter. Brandon Wimbush -- a true freshman who hasn't accomplished a damn thing yet -- has almost 50% more than him.

To your average man, stuff like that is irrelevant. To an athlete who is a public figure that kind of stuff should matter as it directly correlates to $$ and influence.

Perhaps the individuals drawn to Stanford are going there b/c they can remain low key? Look at all the shit kids like Tebow, JFF, Bosa and others had to endure because they were a star for a big name school. Hell, look at Schmidt. Kid was torn apart by fans. That type of attention can be suffocating. Instead, go to Stanford where you can have good weather, fantastic connections and train like hell in anonymity. Doesn't sound half bad to me, but I value things a bit differently than the average 18 football star.

I've watched a ton of Stanford games the past two years. Always look for teams that ND plays... not fact, but it felt they were covered just as much if not more than USC?

On the McCaffrey issue. Q the XXX.... Honestly, I think it was because he's 1) white, 2) was pitted against the SEC guys, and 3) has the all-purpose tag... He finished 2nd which was actually too high IMO. Give me Watson, Henry, or Fournette all day and twice on Sunday before I'll take McCaffrey (college). Don't get me wrong, he'll make someone a nice Slot and return guy in the NFL, but he won't be a productive RB at the next level. He meant a great deal to Stanford, not denying that, but I don't think he's the best player in the country. And that's coming from someone that watched a lot of games where he did some very good things.

That's a really good point, but it probably doesn't apply to Robertson, right? It very well might apply to other guys, but Robertson's other two choices are Bama and Georgia.

Agree on Robertson...although the other two options are basically familiarity.

Just beat them the Which we have a hard time doing. Kelly is 2-4 against them. The last time the Irish won at Stanford was 2008.

I don't really know why a football player cares much about attendance at basketball games.

On the other two points, Stanford is our equal/better. It also - depending on the kid and his preferences - has better weather and a better record in recent years, both head-to-head and overall. It also has a culture that some kids may find more appealing. I get why someone chooses Stanford over Notre Dame.

What I don't get is why someone who really wants to go to Stanford but has also seriously considered Notre Dame chooses Alabama or Georgia over Notre Dame when they can't get in to Stanford. You're shopping down multiple aisles at that point.

Right, it's like you have your heart REALLY set on steak but they're all out of the dry aged ribeye you wanted... so you then go "eh fuck it I guess I'll grab Chipotle on the way home" instead of buying the really good looking tenderloin. If you want steak, THEN BUY THE STEAK. Don't give up and go buy a burrito!

If ND were Kobe Beef, Alabama and Georgia would be a steak and BJ.

Kirby Smart needs to focus on Deshaun Watson, and not 8th grade prospects.
