I think it's pretty reasonable to see global warming and nuclear proliferation as -far and away- the two greatest threats to Pax Americana.

Except that every proposed solution to global warming entails crippling economic policies that would be far more destabilizing.

I take offense to that. Because living in harmony with place that spawned us does not equal stone age. Smdh.

Crippling economic policies? Nothing worse than those that have brought us here to this point. I know they aren't robber baron policies that is for sure.

The world is safer, wealthier, better educated, more democratic, and less violent than it has ever been. Good job humanity.

I beg to differ. My take is that, dependent on one's inclination, Adam and Eve's year(s) in The Garden of Eden – before that damnable snake showed up – was/were better yet.

Bestest by far!

The Atlantic celebrates elite vanity projects like gay marriage as "progress"- and yet given, why does it assume that this "progress" will continue?

Couch it in terms such as anti-repression, anti-regression and anti-deception. That might be of help.

'Tis a mere blip in the numbers, but it sure doesn't hurt ...

I thought this thread was a joke.......and after reading still do.

Want to share why? The article I linked to provided a lot of evidence to back up it's claim... you don't have to agree with all of it, but I'm not sure why you'd think it was a joke.

Using the veil of ignorance, if you were going to be born and you couldn't choose anything but what year you would be born into, you'd be crazy to choose anything but the modern era.

What does that mean? Post-1945?

Post 2000

edit, remember: I'm talking about you know absolutely nothing about what specific circumstances you'll be born into (not gender, country, religion, race, etc...). You can only choose year. TBH, I think the correct answer is always modern day.

Are the authors the same people who gave Obama a peace prize? I was looking for an onion article.

I'll say the same thing to you that I said to yankeefan... why? The article made a ton of arguments backed up with statistics, I'd love to hear why even one of them is wrong.

I'll concede the gay marriage one as being subjective (though again, Rawlsian Veil of Ignorance says it's a good thing) but what else do you disagree with?

I don't think it's fair to cite numbers from 2012 in regards to terrorism as to why 2015 is the safest year. I get the numbers aren't available, but in 2012, Al-Qaeda was weak, Daesh was just beginning, and no one even knew of Boko Haram and Al-Shabab. I think it's pretty fair to say 2015 has been the worst year for terrorism in a really long time. Suicide bombings regularly in Syria and Iraq, executions of civilians and religious minorities, planes blowing up, France essentially on lock down even a month after the most deadly attack on French soil since WWII, thousands of children kidnapped in Nigeria, I certainly don't feel safer in regards to terrorism now than I did a few year ago.

I think it's a joke they cite the Iran Nuclear deal as a reason considering they've already violated it.

I agree with many things in the article though and definitively think post 2000 is the best time to be alive ever.

Stop worrying about climate change for the sake of $. Then when the earth is a toxic wasteland and the ocean's are dead, where are all those profiteers going to spend their all-important $?

Our grandchildren are going to ask "Why was that generation so damned stupid?"
