To be perfectly honest, the whole Settlement thing in Fallout was a big turn off for me. I really hate it. I find it tedious. I also hate the feeling of having to pick up every single item because it's useful in some way. I hate it to the point of me probably returning the game tonight to try and get a big chunk of the price back.

It sucks because I really love the visuals and the gameplay outside of settlements but I feel like I'm not playing the game correctly if I avoid it altogether.

I've been playing The Witcher 3 instead and I like it a lot more,

As a guy who's put a lot of hours into Fallout and had never touched settlement building, this seems pretty silly. I just send all companions and items to the Rocket Gas Station. I don't think I've been back to Sanctuary since the first five hours of the game.

Seems weird to turn in a game you admittedly like because what amounts to an optional side quest isn't your cup of tea. Witcher 3 is choice though.

Final fantasy VII got released for ps4, so I'm playing that. It has some sweet built in cheats too.

Soooo, I've put about 4.5 hours into Fallout 4 over the past couple of days, and I still haven't even left Sanctuary (well I left for a minute to go talk to some bros in a different settlement, saw a rock quarry, and decided to turn around and build up Sanctuary a bit before doing any more of the story). I've been exploring the abandoned houses and scrapping shit now that I've figured out how to use the workshop mode. However, I am having trouble assigning my people to work. I set up a scavenging station for food purposes, but when I try to issue a command to someone to operate the station, it doesn't tell me whether or not it's worked, and they don't follow me once I press "command" and "go to."

Also, I think I got way ahead of myself with some of my buildings. I built a water purifier that I had to put in the river, but I don't have enough wire to connect it to my current generator setup. Also, I built an operational radio tower (crystal decanter FTW!), but I only have one set of potatoes growing right now, and more people arriving every few minutes. Too many people, not enough food/clean water, and not enough material to build the things I need. I think I'm gonna have to move my radio tower and my first generator closer to the river, but I'm worried they will be attacked. Would raiders attack my purifier, generator, and radio tower?
I believe raiders only attack if MAX (Food, Water) > Defense, but I'm not sure about that.

Someone help me out with the settlement management. Every time I go into Workshop mode, I get a tip box that tells me to build something that requires power. I have several things that require power, but that box keeps coming up. It drives me crazy.

Hmm maybe because the Sanctuary stuff was so heavy in the beginning of the game I thought it was a bigger part of the game. It's not just about the settlements though. I dislike having to build upgrades into all the weapons instead of the old "repair" feature. I think it just takes a way a lot of the fun of playing the game and forces you to sift through stupid materials to get a better weapon. I guess I'll give it another try after I play more Witcher.

I've found that Copper seems to be the most valuable resource in Settlement building. You need it for Generators, power lines, power connectors, lights, pretty much anything that requires or generates electricity. I usually suggest that you pickup any items containing copper when you're scavenging. Telephones, cooking pots, light bulbs, fuses, table lamps, and high powered magnets all have copper in them, so I make sure not to miss any of these. Oil can sometimes be a highly sought after commodity too, and circuit boards, but it just depends on how much gun modding I've been doing with oil, and how many turrets I've been building. Make sure you always make a save before you're going to do any major building in a Settlement, you never know when you may run out of parts during a build and find you have a bunch of useless stuff built until it's all finished. I ran out of Copper myself while trying to string power lines around Spectacle Island...that place is huuuuge!

As far as the Scavenging station, I don't think that has anything to do with food. I think Scav Stations are used by Settlers to manufacture junk parts for you. They basically make junk parts appear from thin air, and they deposit them in your Workshop inventory. If you need food in a settlement you'll need to plant food from the Resource menu of the Workshop, and then assign a Settler to those crops. You don't need to assign them to all the crops, just take one Settler and assign them to one unused/unassigned crop (They'll appear with a red character icon on them if no one is tending to them) and they'll assign themselves to as many open crops as they can handle. Same for guard towers, one guard can handle up to 3 towers when assigned. You can tell if a Resource or Guard Tower is currently assigned to a Settler by hovering over it in Workshop mode, it'll have a green character on it to show it's being worked. As far as finding Settlers that DON'T already have a job, that can be a little tougher. Settlers usually go to work around 8am, loafers will be meandering around town doing crap like cooking at the fire, or sitting down. You can put a Bell down in town from the Resource menu, which will call all Settlers to the Bell. You can then hover over each Settler, and if they're assigned to a Crop/Guard Tower it should highlight in green to show where they're working. If nothing is highlighted, then they probably don't have a job.

As far as Raiders, I have yet to see an attack target a Radio Tower or Generators. They typically go for food, turrets, guard towers, and water pumps...and probably water purifiers, but I only have a few of those built and they're at my strongest forts right now. If they destroy any of these items you just have to go into the Workshop and repair them, usually for a small bit of resources. Turrets usually just cost 1 of each item that it took to create them. Crops basically have to be replanted from scratch, but if you just repair the destroyed crops it's less messy. Water pumps repair fairly cheaply too, as do guard towers. If you find that you're getting overburdened with Settlers at a location, just turn off the Recruitment Radio temporarily, or send some of the Settlers to another Settlement. If you've run out of jobs for Settlers, you can either put some Stores down (If you have the ability), or put down more Scavenging Stations and put them to work. Settlements are happier when everyone is working, loafers aren't tolerated!

Try not to get too bogged down with Settlements, unless you really enjoy them. I found myself spending the first two weeks just liberating/building up Settlements and not really enjoying any of the quests. Preston Garvey will never stop giving you Settlement quests....ever. It's part of the Radiant quest system, so it will generate new quests infinitely to give you things to do if you've already finished the game. At some point I finally decided "Sorry, Preston, I really need to go search for my kid now. Jamaica Plains will just have to go without me clearing the Corvega Factory out for the 3rd time." If you do fail a quest, like failing to assist a Settlement being attacked, the results aren't usually terrible. The worst I've seen is a few Settlers may be gone, the Water Pumps were broken, half the crops were ruined, and some turrets needed repaired. Typically if I fail to get to an attack in time I just have to repair a few turrets and some crops. I've even had the map show that the Settlement was reduced to 0 people, but when I get there the people are all still alive. Weird glitch? I dunno.

To be perfectly honest, the whole Settlement thing in Fallout was a big turn off for me. I really hate it. I find it tedious. I also hate the feeling of having to pick up every single item because it's useful in some way. I agree with Greyhammer. I would just avoid settlements pretty much all together if I were you. It's completely optional, and the game is great just on it's own. Settlements are just a little bonus that weren't there in previous games. I think Bethesda saw what a lot of modders have done in previous games with Settlement-type building and decided to add a bit of that in Fallout 4. Great idea, but I'm almost curious to see what the modding community will really do with it once the toolkit is released. To be honest, I get to a point sometimes where I find myself messing around with Settlements waaaay too much, but not nearly as bad as my buddy. His Sanctuary is ridiculous, with walls going completely around the border, several dozen turrets of all kinds, it's a real fortress that puts the Castle to shame.

Yes and no. Most of settlements that have a higher defense than my food and water combined rarely get attacked. The ones that do get attacked seem to be in the dicier parts of the map, basically the farther you go south and east, the harder the enemies and the more often I find my Settlements getting attacked. Nordhagen Beach, Oberland Station, The Castle, and Finch Farm seem to be the ones that get hit the most for me. I've had a few Settlements get attacked that have higher defense, but it's fairly rare.

As far as the error, I'm not familiar with it. Can you send a screenshot?

I do miss a bit of the RPG side of things when it comes to defined Skills like Repair. Having just the Perk list isn't quite as cool to me, but I'm a die hard Fallout fan from '97 that misses the Karma system and the old school character sheet. I do really enjoy the weapon and armor modding in the game though, I'm constantly moving mods around and upgrading gun parts, even if they're minor upgrades. I keep one modded version of just about every weapon type between my two characters. I'm well past the .38 ammo phase in the game since I'm level 50+, but I still find myself pulling out my modified Pipe Rifle from time to time just because I think it's fun and it was my first "baby." Melee weapon modding isn't nearly as fun, they didn't give us as many options, but oh well. I am a bit disappointed you can't craft weapons from scratch, like the Rock-It Launcher, but the Junk Jet is essentially the same thing and they added that to the game. I haven't picked up my Railway Rifle yet...so much fun when you hear the train whistle and see a head get impaled on a wall with a railroad spike!

I don't know if someone posted it here or not (Been talking Fallout on other boards), but there are different levels of each armor type. Somewhere between level 20-30 you'll probably start seeing "Sturdy" versions of armor dropping. These will be the same armors you've been picking up before: Leather, Metal, Combat, Synth, etc, except they'll have much better defense and the armor covers your character's body a little more. Sometime after level 30 you'll also start getting "Heavy" versions of armors dropping, which are even better and cover your character's model even more. The normal pieces will have "Sturdy" or "Heavy" in the name, but if the piece is already modded then the name may be too long to include the Sturdy or Heavy part. If that's the case, the easiest way to tell if you have one of the better pieces is to compare the defensive numbers against a similar piece of armor with the same name. If you still can't tell, you can always compare what the armor looks like on your character:

Sounds like one or more of your Generators aren't connected to anything. I know that you can get away with putting things near Generators to power them, but you may want to make sure that all your Generators have at least one power line running to something.

[EDIT] nm, it looks like it's part of the Settlement tutorial. Check this out:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9n8Wc0wVP4k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Try adding a Recruitment Tower and connecting it to a Generator, it should make the message go away. It sounds like you probably have Lights and stuff connected to it, but for whatever reason the tutorial may be expecting a Recruitment Tower.

Ulk, do you have any combat tips? I've never played a Fallout game before so I have no idea how powerful the various enemies are supposed to be, but I came across a bear the other day and he kicked my ass. Same with a Mister Gutsy in a house that I tried to kill about twenty different times and couldn't come up with a way that worked. I have a scoped rifle that works okay at long range when I'm not detected and a shotgun that's decent up-close, but I lose HP very quickly and don't have any decent mid-range weapons.

First, what difficulty are you playing on? I found Survival to be fairly rough starting out, especially when you're running into Legendaries that can 1 shot you out of the blue. Second, those Yao Guai bears and Mr. Gutsy robots are pretty powerful for starting characters. If they have a skull next to their name, they're probably several levels above you, keep that in mind. I'd avoid Mr. Gutsy if you can, same with those Yao Guai bears. Those things are meant for levels 15-20+. While you can kill them at low levels, it usually requires either Power Armor or "strategery." I was able to kill a Yao Guai once by shooting it from the top of a long rock, then jumping down when it got close. Rather than jump off the rock after me it ran all the way around the rock and back down, which then prompted me to jump back up on the long rock and make it chase me again. I don't think bears in real life will jump from a ledge to chase prey, and neither do Yao Guai.

I've found that you seem to take much more damage in the beginning of the game, probably because your armor isn't very good yet, your health pool is low, and your weapons aren't great yet. Make sure you always have the best modded version of armor possible, it goes a long way. I strongly suggest everyone takes the Armorer perk, it should really be a requirement for most play throughs. If not, you can always find armor pieces on the dead that are pre-modded.

Armor is only half the battle though, because the longer a fight goes, the more Stimpacks you'll have to inject. If you're using guns, focus on building Perception, and taking perks in the Perception tree that boost damage (Or take the Agility perks if you're using more Pistols/Automatics). You can also take perks that help with VATs if you use VATs. Lately I've been using a Sniper Rifle and scoping targets from 200+ yards away...most times they can't even find me before I slay the entire camp. For indoors I usually try to pull single enemies towards me in ambushes, and I fall back on VATs if things get crazy (Trying to shoot jumping baby Mirelurks is a pain in the ass sometimes). I tend to use Shotguns for short range too, since they receive the same damage bonus from Rifleman as my Rifles do. Head shots work well against most enemies and can take them out of the fight early, but some enemies you may want to target other body parts. For example, if you can cripple a Deathclaws legs, they'll be writhing on the ground and won't be able to hug you with their nasty claws. I've found the Sniper perks to be particularly helpful...one level of that perk will cause your non-automatic scoped rifles to knock a target to the ground, opening it up for further easy attacks...it's very nice. Another level of it will increase the head shot chance of rifles by 25% in VATs. If you're looking for a mid-range gun and you're already building a Sniper, I'd look at modding a .45 caliber rifle to suit your needs. Don't put the long scope on it, and I think the longer barrels will drop your accuracy when firing from the hip, so you may want to use a shorter barrel. I switch between a .45mm and a 5.56mm rifle for Medium range encounters, basically something semi-automatic that still gets my Rifleman perk bonus and I can drop the target quick while shooting from the hip.

If you're still having trouble taking damage, I'd suggest taking a few levels of the Toughness perk and building Endurance, or take the Rooted perk if your Strength is high enough. I'd also make sure you're using cover when firing at targets, and don't be afraid to retreat a bit if you're under heavy fire. I generally try to put as much distance as possible between myself and a target (Unless I'm on my melee character), because closer combat usually means grenades can get chucked at you, or you're going to eat some Shotgun shells to the face. Stealth can be a potent ally. A Sneak Attack from Stealth can do 2x the damage on enemies, which often means instant death to Raiders if you pop them with a head shot. Thinning out a pack of enemies will go a long way to keeping your health up, so taking a target or two out before the fighting really starts is very helpful.

That's probably the crux of it. I'm only at level five so I'm probably just not supposed to be fighting those dudes yet. They were on my way to Diamond City and since that's super early in the game I assumed I wouldn't be facing to many enemies that I wasn't powerful enough to fight yet.

Think of it like a real wasteland. Sometimes the best strategy is to just get the hell out of there.

Something else to keep in mind, combat related: most enemies have a higher tier version of themselves. Basic, low level Raiders will just be "Raider." Higher level enemies usually have something after the name, like "Raider Scum" or instead of "Feral Ghoul" you'll have "Feral Roamer." I don't remember what tier each one is, but if you're sniping targets you can usually get an idea how strong they are by going into VATs and comparing how much damage a certain baddie is going to take in comparison to a basic target like a regular Raider.

I forgot to mention this before, but if you're a Sniper you absolutely going to want a modded Laser Musket at some point. I refrained from touching Energy Weapons at the start of the game, but Laser Muskets can really be helpful...hell, they can work in any situation really, as long as you have some cover. Laser Muskets aren't as sophisticated as their brothers, the Laser Pistols/Rifles, but they can do a hell of a lot of damage. Laser Muskets require hand cranking them to charge each shot, but the nice thing is that you can "super charge" a Laser Musket with extra cranks if your Musket's receiver allows it (At the expense of extra ammo). So, for a Musket that can hold 2 charges, that's 2x the damage. For a Musket that can hold 5 charges, that's 5x the damage, etc. You can see where the benefits come into play for a Sniper. On the downside you can't supress a laser weapon, but if you're firing from far enough away with a Long Scope it probably won't matter.

Two of my favorite guns are a Legendary Laser Musket and a Legendary Double Barrel Shotgun. The Legendary Musket has a special feature that allows it to do double damage if the target is at full health...a Sniper's dream weapon. 5 cranks of that Musket and a fresh target, nothing survives, not even Legendaries. The Legendary Shotgun has a special feature that causes 25 points of Bleed Damage on top of it's normal damage. Supposedly Bleed damage on a Shotgun is overpowered, because each pellet will cause that Bleed damage to proc, so if you find a similar Shotgun be sure to hold onto it!

I thought I had clicked into the Fiesta bowl thread, so I saw this and thought I came across the most in depth analogy ever to compare Nd's chances against OSU.

Yeah, I didn't go to Diamond City till level 30, but that was a pretty long time to wait  I was busy having fun with Settlements. The further south and/or east you go on the map, the harder the enemies you'll always find. I'd try to do most of my questing near the north-west quadrant of Boston and slowly work my way out from there.

Nice, Whiskey. Love some video game music from time to time, makes you a little nostalgic when you hear an old tune. They've got a video game music thread over on the Shag, some good stuff over there. Here's some of my favorites:

Another one from him, pretty impressive One Winged Angel from FFVII...if not a little creepy, which is fitting.

Ok, this guy is pretty cool:

Looks like he did the Mike Tyson's Punchout Fight theme too, I won't link it here to keep from bogging the page down. I dig the Zelda: Ocarina of Time stuff too. Secret of Mana, Zelda Link to the Past, Street Fighter II, ...it's like he's done all my favorite games from my childhood.

You may like Taylor Davis, if you've never heard her work, Whiskey. She started off just doing violin arrangements of video games on her own and she's gotten pretty popular:

This guy has done some interesting stuff too with video game soundtracks and mixing them with old school rap:
Chrono Jigga | 2 Mello
Final Fantasy - The 3-6 Chambers | 2 Mello
Nastlevania | 2 Mello

The in-laws got me a $100 gift card to Game Stop. Thinking of getting Star Wars Battlefront and Assassins Creed Syndicate. Any thoughts?

Battlefronts only thing it has going for it is the star wars aspect. The graphics are amazing but besides that its pretty meh in offering anything to compete with the other major fps. I have Halo 5, black ops 3, and battlefront. Halo 5 is best for gameplay/mechanics, cod is fun for the zombies but pretty much same old thing you expect, and battlefront like I said just looks cool. I think I played 2 full games online and never touched it again.

Haven't played syndicate but from what I heard it was a huge improvemtn over the last insallmetn unity. Unity was the first in the series I palyed since the original, bought it casue im a history nut and the era is my favorite but still couldn't put in more than maybe an hour or 2 cause I thought it was bland. However Syndicate is getting some praise although I would def put Witcher and Fallout 4 over it if you want best open world adventure saga.

I just had to get in on what Whiskey and ulukin started. I love what you guys posted btw. I love the sound of acoustic guitar so I'm a fan of these dudes. Lacks in production value (you can see mom in the background at times.) But I like it.

Excellent stuff. I definitely dig the acoustic guitars, and those are some great tunes. That's the kind of stuff I listen to while I'm working, along with the Taylor Davis instrumentals. I'm definitely a big fan of Chrono Trigger. Just a great game with an excellent soundtrack. Chrono Trigger is the only game I've ever made my wife play. There are a few games I like more, but I didn't think she'd enjoy them.

Now, for something somewhat different. While this isn't as pleasing to the ear, I always thought it was cool when people could chain multiple floppy drives and make "music." This guy is one of the best:

And something not as much video game related (Unless you're talking Battlefront)

I linked the 2 Mello mashups above, here's some of the good ones from those albums, didn't realize someone uploaded them to YouTube:

I know we've gone off on a tangent recently with video game music, but it looks like we're now slipping into SNL skits  Good skit though.
