yup, the guys on II mentioned too that if DK identified the pass play as the proper option he would only have one receiving target to throw to. (possibly a TE)

Didn't the tackle miss his block by not turning it inside to give Kizer a running lane? I think it was more a missed block than a bad call at the line.

Quick straw poll so we are all on the same page before the USC game:

(A) If we lose this game by 10+ will anyone's overall opinion change about BK?

(B) If we win this game by 10+ will your opinion change?

For me, the answer to both A & B is no, it still depends on how the entire season goes. But A will likely signify more bad things to come.

Just curious if this game, by itself, has the power to sway your opinion.

A win by over 10 won't change my opinion and a loss by say 14 wouldn't change my opinion but another game like last year's against USC might start to change my opinion.

For me, this season matters, but it's his tenure as a whole. Need to see constant improvement to the point we are stable and successful year in and year out.

A- yes, this is a game he must win or not get blown out.
B- no, I'm a BK fan, just hate is short yardage offense.

This was and still is the year for ND. He has the team to be really good. Is he the coach to lead this talent? I think yes. He can prove it on Saturday night. There will be no shame in losing a close game to a (probably) more talented SC team that no longer has a distraction for a head coach. That said, if he is the guy for ND, he'll have the team ready.

A. Yes. I expect USC to come out fired up, but I think we're a better team with better leadership this year compared to last year. If we get blown out again it'll really sting, and even though they're probably better without Sark it'll look bad to lose to an interim coach by double digits.

B. Not really, because I'll take a win against USC any day of the week. The points don't really matter to me, although a blowout would be fantastic. I applaud the fact tha Kelly has already gone 3-2 against USC in his tenure, which is much better than the 3 previous coaches did. Yes, none of those seasons were against Cheaty Petey, but USC remains our rival and it's a tough game regardless of the coach. USC essentially gets whoever they want when it comes to recruiting, their talent level is about as good as it gets. If Kelly goes 4-2 against USC after Saturday that's a big plus for his career at ND. When you look at our big rivals over the years Kelly has at least been competitive against all of them with winning records or at least competitive finishes (Michigan being the exception at a 2-3 record, but we were competitive in the losses and the final game was a great exclamation point). None of the previous coaches since Holtz can say they were competitive against all our rivals.

We should now be at that stage in a program (barring any significant injuries or dismissals) where blowouts are a thing of the past. Frankly if we don't win this game, at home against a beleagured opponent without a coach, then we'll be cruising to maybe 9-3.

If they lose this game I find it hard to see them winning out from there.

I am torn on how to perceive a loss to USC if it were to happen. They have been a train wreck this year, but does this coaching situation get them back on track?

Aren't the Trojans the most talented team left on our schedule?

Let's just beat USC so we don't have to have this discussion...

Trojans are the most talented team, but Stanford may be the best team left on the schedule, depending on your point of view. Since the opening loss to Northwestern Stanford has been pretty decent. As far as the other teams we'll be favored, but some of them aren't gimmies. BC started the season okay, but they've been struggling mightily on offense lately, yet I'm sure we'll get their best as always. Pitt has been better than advertised so far, and they always play us close regardless of the talent gap. Then there's Temple, who hasn't really played anyone, but they're still 5-0 and they probably feel like a team of destiny after finally knocking off Penn State to start the year.

Wake Forest is probably the only game with real blow out potential left on the schedule.

Thing is... The stuff that caused this meltdown,... None of it is new, it's the same stuff happening over and over, if nothing else get yourself out of those situations by not calling the same hamfisted plays in the red zone over and over!!

Trick plays too... They're clearly getting targeted... That's coaching.

Red zone offense has been mediocre at best in the Kelly era. Really been the difference between 8 and 10 win seasons, IMO.

It's high school level stuff... The d has a short field thus they can crash more easily... Slow developing plays should be nixed across the board but it seems like that's all this staff ever wants to call in the red zone....

USC is the most talented team we'll play this year. It's unfortunate that we gave up some of the long plays, but those are some crazy skilled offensive players.

Credit to BK and BVG for adjusting and winning the second half.

Giving up those long plays has been a consistent theme under BVG regardless of the level of talent possessed by the opposing teams. It cost ND at least two wins down the stretch last year and that's a big part of the reason why we lost to Clemson this year. Hopefully that gets cleaned up.

BK may win coach of the year and we made this thread after a win lololol

I think this is Kelly's best coaching job. The fact that we are 6-1 right now with our injuries really shows the depth Kelly has developed.

Spreading the field and throwing it on 3rd and short cost us 2 drives alone. Then on 1st and goal from the 3 we don't punch it straight up the middle, not once, and fail to get a TD. There is more than enough evidence for this thread to exist. And we add more weekly. If there were any actual dominant teams this year BK wouldn't be in the running, No reasonable person is calling for his head, but maybe a long look in the mirror to get his shit straight.

Good:

1) Our special teams units finally resemble those of other elite teams. Especially our punt return team.
2) The "Plan B" complaint I made in the OP hasn't been too bad since the Virginia game.
3) We finally came out swinging in the first quarter.
4) Time Management--didn't notice any problems against USC. Still have a long way to go in this aspect though.
5) Defensive line seemed to get a lot of pressure.

Bad:
1) Red Zone playcalling
2) Our defense is pretty bad overall. Way too many big plays. BVG was a bad hire. Don't think that's even debateable.
3) Joe Schmidt deserves his own line. Probably the biggest wtf of this staff

Looking Ahead:
Navy is the only team we've beat with less than 3 losses. Temple, Pitt, and Stanford will all be tough road games. If we go 4-1 the rest of the way I think we had a successful season all things considered. 9-3 won't warrant a "fire kelly" but I won't be happy. Our schedule just didn't turn out to be good enough to lose 3 games. 8-4 goodbye.

Your schtick is getting old. Use the ignore function. Don't visit the thread. You waste everyone's time and I certainly don't care what you think about this thread.
