FWIW, Wiltfong has been flip flopping on his CB's and confidence quite a bit lately. I'm not sure if its because the recruiting landscape just becomes more and more fickled or they are creating hype that isn't there. However, I'm starting to put less stock in early Wiltfond CB's

I don't get it. Wasn't this kid flipping between Michigan and Bama before the commitment? Now all of a sudden Harbaugh has a head of steam and all of a sudden the Irish jump to the front? Makes no sense if I'm remembering that correctly.

Thats how it ended, with UM in 2nd. Its a little odd that they aren't giving UM a chance. To me I'm wondering if this has to do with the defense. Both teams run 3-4 schemes, which doesn't seem to fit Kareem's profile.

Interesting you say that. I was just looking up his CB's and was going to ask you and Panda about your feelings in the '16 thread. I'll see you over there after I grab some coffee.

Piombino -

No one - have you seen our DEs? Lol. I'm still not sure I've ever seen Romeo make a play or get by a defender.

hate to bag on Romeo constantly but he's the most infuriating ND player on D to watch every week. It used to drive me crazy seeing Shembo attempt to pass rush but the guy was frickin Reggie White compared to Romeo.. Hopefully little bro has a bit more nuance in his game

Who does this kid most closely compare to on ND's current roster?

For me its Isaac Rochell accept I think he ends up being a better pass rusher on the edge and maybe not as good against the run. Similar sizes coming out 6'4, 260 range. He's a SDE and through maturity will be able to slide inside in pass rushing packages to the 3T. I think he's got a little more quick twitch to him than Rochell does which will help in that category. However, I don't think we'll want him to get up to 287 like Rochell is. Rochell is too big, IMO for an every down SDE. Rochell is fantastic against the run at SDE and good inside as a pass rusher. However, we need to get guys on the edges with more speed and quickness if we want to see this 4 man pass rush improve.

This report from Prister back in the spring compares to him to Kap/Rochell.

The kid at least has a rip move in his arsenal which is promising compared some of the DE's ND has on the roster

Keep in mind that Shembo was our second best pass rusher two years in a row behind Tuitt.

I've been pleased with what the defense has done overall but we need to get Trumbetti and Blankenship on the field more. Its easy to see those guys have a quickness off the ball that Romeo doesn't. At least give them more snaps. Trumbetti is actually quite productive with his snaps, he just doesn't get many. FWIW, I think Coach D is about to blow his top if Trumbetti can't get on the field more, makes no sense.

Coach D and ISD are about done with Schmidt, too. They have Martin on the hot seat, but both said 'they wouldn't make the change at this point'.

Romeo's playing time infuriates me. I'm not joking when I say I've literally, in the hundreds of snaps he's gotten, never seen him beat ONE block. Not even to crappy teams, or from a guy tripping. There is zero pressure ever generated from him. Acamp could stand there and get locked down by a single blocker just as well.

Its the scheme that BVG wants to run. He wants run stoppers on the edges and look to create a pass rush from his blitzes. For me I think we could take our foot off the gas on the blitzing, use LB's more as support, and gets some edge guys on the field that can penetrate. With all that said the D overall is playing better but still not as good as I think this talent suggests it should.

Since Romeo can't rush the passer, if we insist on dropping a DL into coverage, why not him instead of Trumbetti/Day? There are a lot of things I don't understand about BVG.

Awesome, sounds good. God knows we could use an end who can get to the QB.

As for Schmidt, that has more to do with playing Navy this week. I think all of ISD agrees a change SHOULD be made after that. As for Martin, it's obvious that they are unimpressed with his output so far, but are they sure the next man in would fair much better at this stage?

Because he would be the DL you expect to drop into coverage. Dropping your best pass rusher would theoretically be a surprise to an opposing QB creating confusion/opportunities for blitzes or clogged passing lanes that they anticipated to be free.

I think thats a fair point but then you still have to create pressure on the QB or he will just reset his progressions, feet, etc. This goes back to my overthinking argument. Its BVG's thing, he's trying to out scheme everybody instead of letting some of the best talent just do its thing. Its honestly like he sits at home at night and thinks "I bet Clemson has no idea that I'll bring Schmidt on a blitz to start the game" well who cares if he can't get there. Then when he doesn't its a 30+yard run for Watson downfield.

Not on ISD and haven't seen what coach D said about this but could you share? Mostly Martin.

ISD's post-Clemson DID say they'd make a change on Schmidt (can't remember if they said if they suggested before USC or after).

They both said Martin isn't living up to the expectations, but they're not sure a change of Center is a good move. So unlike what they think of Schmidt.

They were suggesting Martin isn't meeting expectations but the line, as a unit, was playing very well. Basically they would be hesitant to disrupt the chemistry of the line even if they thought another player would be an upgrade over Martin.

Since "chemistry" plays less a role at LB than it does OL, they would be quicker to pull the trigger on a change at mike.

That's they way I understood it, at least.

I hate to keep doing this since its OT but I'm going to anyways and I'll delete if anybody wants me to. But we're here so, did they talk about replacements. Anything about Morgan, Martini, or Grace?

ISD mentioned all of the above. Their point was anyone but Schmidt.

I can't recall. Like Koon said, they were discussing several players I just can't recall if they were discussing them in terms of player x should replace player y.

They were really raving about Coney. Basically said he's just the type of player you have to get on the field. Made me wonder if we'd be better off with Jaylon at mike and coney taking Jaylon's spot.

I just don't get how Martini hasn't had a shot at taking his spot at mike this year. I'm not at practice or anything but if you need a player with some smarts at mike, how the hell is this not your man? He has to be an upgrade physically and I doubt he's a huge drop off mentally (just a guess from what I see on Saturdays).

Not really hearing much talk about KK. Maybe it picks up if he does indeed visit the Irish, but for now most here think he is still solid to Bama.

Wiltfong continues to say that he thinks Kareem signs with ND. Says he's waiting on one more piece of info before he changes his CB.

Provided we can flip Kareem and get Hayes, that's a pretty good DL haul.

Kareem
Hayes
Okwara
Ade
Jones
Kemp?
