So, with our struggles in short yardage situations and our lack of depth at RB, why not give Jaylon a chance to come in for goal line and short yardage situations? Use him like UCLA uses Myles Jack (just a few offensive plays per game)! If I remember correctly, Jaylon was a pretty damn good RB in high school.

If anything, use Nyles Morgan. Kid's a borderline freak and isn't being used at all.

That's the 3rd times he's won it, also got it after the Michigan and Stanford games last year.

I love that he stopped the QB and the A-back on the same play.

Hope this isn't bad luck, two posts in a row, but it seemed to be that one followed the other pretty closely! Keith just had something to say about our Superman :

Is Jaylon Smith the best linebacker in college football?

Notre Dame’s junior linebacker Jaylon Smith is off to a fast start. He’s leading the team in solo tackles and just edges Joe Schmidt for the lead in total tackles. He’s also leading the team in TFLs, shares the lead in sacks, and already has two tallies in the pass breakups and pass defended, while also forcing a fumble and recovering one as well.

Asked by Brian Kelly and the defensive staff to elevate his game this season, Smith has done just that. Combined with his elite athletic traits and an advanced knowledge of the defensive scheme, Smith’s in the conversation for the country’s best linebacker.

At the quarter-turn of the season, ProFootballFocus thinks he’s the best.

He leads their grading system with a PFF rating of 10.8, the highest of any linebacker in the country. Smith’s defensive performance is a big reason why the Irish check in at No. 6 in the AP poll this week and sit at 3-0.

Really the only criticism I can lay at him is he's generally not a huge hitter, but he's a good tackler which is much more important. Also maybe why he's stayed healthy so far (knock on wood).

That is like complaining that your '70 Corvette LT1 was "too light." or maybe that your Lamborghini Diablo SE30 "rode too close to the ground!"

I would ask all four quarterback Jaylon played against, and Patrick Skov, among others, how they feel about that!

Just for kicks - do you think Jay runs a sub 4.4 at this point? When he recovered that ball vs. GTECH I wish no one was around him so we could really get a chance for him to take off. 6'2 1/2 240+. Freak of nature.

I was surprised that he was caught.

I think realistically he runs somewhere in the 4.5s. His acceleration is incredible, but I doubt he has the top-end speed to run below a 4.40 at 240 lbs.

If we make it to the NC, I'm in favor of using him on the goal line as a RB. All of the chips on the table.

I'd prefer it be done against Carnegie Mellon level competition... at least five games a year.

Can we just change this to a prayer thread that he can be a 6 star recruit next year? No way in hell he stays, but prayer is powerful stuff!

Ha, I actually remember getting crapped on here for saying early in his career that we should use Te'o situationally on the goal line like Brian Toal at BC...although this was when our power-run game was terrible and we would routinely whiff on the goal line.

On the field w/ pads probably not - but at the combine..
I could see a 4.44. He's so lean the 240 is straight muscle.

But in regards to him running the ball on the goal line.. Can't say I'm opposed.
Played RB in HS as we all know. Why not? Although I think that would trigger the
defense to key on him instantly which would be a disadvantage.
