I find this hard to believe, but if true, his only hope is some team picks him up as a FA. None will take a back coming off knee surgery that doesn't have a decent resume. This would have been his year to show teams what he can do.

Just here to rehash what's been said: leaving early while coming off a major knee injury is silly. He'll get his carries if he returns.

Also just to rehash. One poster. One website.

I love Tarean, but this seems a little crazy to me. He isn't a big bruiser by NFL standards, won't break away from defenses and doesn't have a Theo Riddick type pass catching and juking skill set. I just don't know what would separate him at the NFL level. A lot of good backs never come close to making it in the league. Great college back though.

I think he catches the ball really well, but not in Theo's league. What he does have is great vision and the ability to jump cut.

Exactly. He's a guy that consistently hits the right gap agressively and can make people miss, which gets you 1st downs. He really does almost everything roght, and while he isnt an athletic freak os still an NFL athelete. As much as its nice having a home run hitter, at RB these days it's more important to have a guy that will move the chains and not put them back in the down and distance. The home run hits are what the passing game is much better at.

To be considered a great back, you should at least be a 1K runner. Not that TF hasn't been good for Notre Dame, but a great back, he is not.

Seems like an unfounded rumor based on him getting his surgery done by an outside doctor. That doesn't mean that he would go pro and a lot of players have done the same thing.

If true, I applaud Folston's decision to try and continue Notre Dame's strong recent trend of running backs declaring early to go undrafted (D. Walker, Wood, Atkinson).

Most schools have an orthopedic surgeon or surgeons whom they send their athletes too, for surgery. Now they aren't always on staff just loosely affiliated with the school.

ETA: For example ASU had Dr. Carter as their head of Orthopedic surgery and team physician for long time (I believe he is now the Phoenix Suns orthopedic surgeon).

UND uses South Bend Orthopedics which has a long relationship with ND. On of their MDs, a guy named Ratigan, lettered for 4 years under Holtz. Unless you filled the team then you won't recognize the name. He played LB next to guys named Bolcar, Stonebreaker, and DuBose.

I don't think this is a big deal and here is why. First, it doesn't matter where he gets his surgery, all surgeons are going to be pretty competent, by and large. Maybe he had a family member who knew a great surgeon whom they trusted very much; a doctor-patient relationship is important. Second, having an ACL tear surgery is tough business. It's hard work recovering and in the immediate aftermath of the surgery, getting around is tough. Maybe he's closer to home where family can take care of him and mom can make him some home cooking while he recovers. We don't know the full extent of his injuries, but say he had a meniscus repair, he would have to be off of his feet for a certain time period. Being in dorms makes that very, very difficult. It makes sense to try and recover at home in the short term, and not in a dorm where you have to go down a long hallway just to use the bathroom.

The sky is not falling. There are plenty of reasons that, should this rumor even be true, would not be cause for any concern.

You may be correct in the reasoning on Tarean's part, but on the other hand it's not as if ND's sports medical staff has no clue about an athlete's post-surgery recovery. I think they may have handled it a time or two before ;). I imagine their care would be top notch.

I doubt he would leave in this condition. An agent , his parents you would think show how much of a bone headed idea that would be. I am more concerned that for some reason he doesn't have faith in our docs.

This is the one situation where you can virtually guarantee it'd be a bad decision. Leaving without a degree, as a RB which is the shortest career in the NFL, and he wouldn't get drafted. If CJ comes back I don't really care because well be fine at RB, but Folston should defintiely get that degree and show the knee is healthy.

Rumor out there that Folston might be looking at the the NFL draft. Supposedly didn't have surgery with the ND staff.

Source. Poster on Irish illustrated. JB said he heard something 3rd hand about it but couldnt confirm.

I think that would be a big mistake for Tarean. And I would hope that anyone advising him would say so.

Folston's career yards-per-game avg is 54.4 yds. That's hardly awe-inspiring. Plus, he is coming off of a missed season due to a non-contact injury, which would probably scare a lot of teams off. At best, he is a late second day pick. Unless his family is destitute, I think he would be better served by coming back and pumping up his resume.

After Robert Hughes, I guess I can't write off anything completely. But this makes so little sense it's almost impossible for me to believe it. Whoever is in his ear with this idea (if this is even a real thing) is a terrible person.

Couldn't agree more. I'm going to assume this is not real based on how ridiculous it would actually be.

I hope TF stays.

No matter what, I wish him the best.

I hope his last thought before he makes his decision on this matter is the value an ND degree holds.

But it sure seems like there have been a lot of signs since last spring that the "young'uns" have really been giving the "old'uns" a run for their money!

It goes without saying that TF going pro after this year would make absolutely zero sense. Only two even semi-logical arguments I can see for it:
1: Those rumors over the summer that he was heading down the academic path as Bryant were true. (I recall reading talk here that staff were escorting all running backs to class to make sure they went).
2: Most running backs only last until 25 or 26 and he wants to get paid for as many of those carries as possible. Even if it's the mediocre and unreliable wages of an undrafted free agent.

Still, major league bad idea.
