I saw that coming. And I couldn't see anything else when it happened.

I thought that the website would be near meltdown. All I can say is bravo to those who want to support DeShone and are keeping Malik in their thoughts and prayers.

As much as I have always liked DeShone, I feel the same way about Malik. And I feel terrible for the kid.

Did anyone else notice the tackling yesterday? Maybe it's just me, spoilin' fer a fit! But, I felt like their technique for bringing ball carriers down vacillated between rolling them over to toss them head first into the ground, and throwing at their legs from the back and sides. Maybe I need to take this to the game thread, but I didn't feel good about Va's technique at all!

Someone told me that they thought Kelly had a long private, tearful, heart to heart with Malik. In the conversation he took more than his share of responsibility for the lame play calling that stalled the offense, as if it was also responsible for Malik's injury.

Don't know if it is true; I want to say it is not, because if it was private, how would anyone know?

But it is clear that Kelly was unusually emotional and probably crying before the post game press conference.

If so I hope he uses this lesson to fix the effin' game plan!

Malik Zaire had surgery Sunday morning to cast and repair his fractured ankle, Brian Kelly said during his weekend teleconference. The Irish quarterback is resting and under observation on campus, after team doctor Brian Ratigan performed the operation.

Zaire was injured late in the game against Virginia, his season ended on his tenth carry of the afternoon, with DeShone Kizer replacing Zaire and leading the Irish to a victory in the final seconds. Kelly hopes Zaire will begin the rehab process soon, with a targeted return for spring practice.

“Surgery went well. He’ll begin the process of rehab once he’s able to get the swelling down,” Kelly said. “I think it’s a couple weeks before we start to begin some movement. It’s non-weight bearing for about six weeks, and then Rob Hunt, our football athletic trainer, will begin some movement. We are hoping to have him back full go for spring ball.”

Just because Zaire’s season is finished doesn’t mean he’ll be away from the team. Kelly hopes to have Zaire traveling with the team as early as the Clemson game, likely there to support Kizer, and likely a good way to keep the spirits of the injured quarterback high.

Kelly compared the injury to the one Joe Schmidt suffered last season. Schmidt, who broke his ankle on the first day of November against Navy was back working out with the Irish during spring ball, though he was kept out of contact drills.

Notre Dame’s quarterback depth chart is now led by Kizer, with true freshman Brandon Wimbush backing him up. Montgomery VanGorder is now the third stringer.

Best wishes to Malik for a speedy and more importantly a successful recovery. Malik is a warrior and will be back

Not sure why it is happening every year, but going back to 2009 there has been a major QB break/tear every year:

2009: Clausen - torn ligaments in toe; Crist - Torn ACL
2010: Crist - Ruptured patellar tendon (+ the headshot that took him out of much of the scUM game)
2011: Crist - ruptured confidence
2012: Rees - Broken laws
2013: Golson - Broken judgment on test
2014: Golson - ruptured confidence
2015: Golson - 'broken chest'; Zaire - fractured ankle and ligament damage

That's great news that Kelly hopes to have him back for spring ball. I watched the game with a friend whose dad is an orthopedic surgeon, and he (the surgeon dad) texted us that he thought that injury might be career-threatening. I was bracing for bad news.

Hope MZ makes a full recovery and comes back better than ever. I really enjoyed seeing him play what little bit of time he was in. Kid is a helluva baller. Better days ahead Irish Nation.

Betting he will be the first one congratulating DK, and will be running around on crutches keeping his teammates up once he's able. Knowing his attitude, this kid will make it back.

Dumb question, but will Malik be able to be on the sidelines during the games? I think he'd be a massive influence there.

I believe BK was quoted as saying he hopes to have him at the Clemson game, so I believe so.

My understanding is that he won't. To be eligible for a sixth year, you have to have lost more than one year to circumstances beyond your control, such as injury. Malik only lost one year to injury; his freshman year was an elective redshirt.

(Folston, on the other hand, will now have a 5th year available.)

No.
Not unless ND can pull a Devin Gardner and prove injuries were the reason for Malik's redshirt his first season on campus.
To get a medical 6th year he'd need to get hurt either next year or the year after also.

Basically 2 missed seasons = 1 medical

Bleachers Report.

Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire to have boot removed soon; should Irish roll with Kizer?
By Kevin McGuireNov 8, 2015, 2:46 PM EST

Notre Dame has managed to get by a number of injury concerns this season, including one to quarterback Malik Zaire. The play of freshman quarterback DeShone Kizer has helped the Irish continue to win games and rise in the polls and be recognized as a legitimate playoff contender. On Sunday, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly told reporters the walking boot Zaire has been wearing is scheduled to come off in two weeks, and that opens the door to an interesting question that must be answered after a possible playoff run.

Should Zaire return to role the starting quarterback without question in 2016 or should Kizer continue to lead the offense moving forward?

This is a question that will surely be asked and debated in the coming months, and the play of Kizer between now and when Zaire is ready to play again can still change and affect the situation. Kizer stepped in to replace the injured Zaire in mid-September after Zaire was hurt in a road win at Virginia. Since then Kizer has thrown for 1,931 yards, 16 touchdowns and just six interceptions and rushed for 308 yards and six touchdowns. The only setback under Kizer has come on the road at Clemson, the new No. 1 team in the AP poll and the top team in last week’s College Football Playoff ranking, and he nearly delivered a win in that game as well.

What if Notre Dame reaches the playoff? Would Kelly contemplate putting Zaire back into the starting mix next fall without hesitation, or will he have to earn the job back from Kizer in the spring? And what happens if Kelly does stick with Kizer? Would Zaire enter the offseason feeling like he needs to find a new place to see some playing time, as Everett Golson did once it became clear Zaire would be Notre Dame’s quarterback?

What would you do if you were Brian Kelly?
.

I had hoped this bomb had a much longer fuse. Apparently not.

BOOM!

Now discuss.

Pointless to debate the subject at this juncture I think. We know more than we did after Virginia, but until we know if we're in or out of the playoffs and how far we go I think there's not enough information to draw a conclusion. I expect there will be a QB competition in the spring and fall, but I wouldn't give the job outright to one guy or the other at this point.

Zaire will not leave.

He's as fiery a competitor as walks this earth.

I honestly believe Kizer and he will duke it out throughout the spring next year, with the team as victors.

It would be suicide to put a guy who has been in a boot for 4 months in the starting lineup for a playoff game and think he's going to be amazing. Kizer starts and plays. No questions asked.

It's a bleacher report article so they are not really asking the tough questions here. At this point I would find it foolish for Malik not to be given his medical season and keep it shut down till the spring.

No debate. Both should compete, and best one should start. Personally, I am for the idea that you can play both guys.
