In general, I don't like "running quarterbacks." I know it is a college thing, and I am partial to the pro game so maybe that is part of it. I like a QB that can run when he gets out of the pocket and things break down, but running the QB by design between the tackles is just dumb. He is likely the only guy on your team you REALLY can't afford to lose to injury or you forfeit your ability to move the ball in the air, and if you can't do that you can't win in modern football.

I agree. There's no doubt that it adds a dangerous edge to the offense, but that's a double sided sword for sure. This is not a small reason why I always hoped Golson would not only stay, but come back as the clear #1.

At least Auburn won. Tennessee had about 20 different plays on which they could have won the game, and didn't make one of them - blowing a 17 point lead at home in the process. (Plus they cost me money, which is the real reason I care.)

Your telling me... I go to Tennessee. Just got back from the game and vibes are at an all time low right now. Loudest game I've ever been to though. At least ND won for me

The original post in this thread is pretty much how I felt for about an hour after Zaire got hurt (and still do, to a lesser extent).

Zaire was the one guy we just couldn't afford to lose.

Funny that i have zero negtive reps except from mods or former mods as a result from a negative rep i gave them

Very petty

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...after writing the above, this dude just neg-repped me.

I love you man. Couldn't respond to the post bc you had absolutely nothing, so you do some stupid red bomb, as if that means something.

"Very petty". 5 years later and you're still hurting, and still red bombing people that hurt your feelings with words. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You can't make this stuff up. Nice 'debate' lol.

I can't believe what I've read on here over the last 15 minutes in a few threads. I don't post here very often. In fact, I don't even lurk here much. Have some faith in the team you say you love and the team you say you live for.

The fact is, we won. Kizer went 8/12 and had a pretty damn ridiculous game-winning pass, especially for a heck of a baptism by fire. 80 yard, 13 play drive and converting on 4th down to keep the drive going? Where's everyone's fire? Were you not going nuts when Fuller scored, or were you sitting there moping about what hasn't even happened yet? Grow up and take the lumps. Kizer has a great load of talent around him. If Tommy Rees could get us through games in 2012 on numerous occasions, so can DeShone. I might as well post this in a few threads.

We're the Fighting Irish, not the Crying Irish.

A warning from a mod is different than what this dude did. 5 years later and he's still bitching about a neg rep he got from a mod, when HE was the one who originally gave the mod one in the first place? And then he neg reps me out of the blue for revenge lol, after calling mods petty? Dude is hilarious.

We were going nuts when that pass completed. That pass is why I still have hope for this year.

I blame the alumni, they should have stepped up and matched what F$U paid Golson :)

All in on Kizer at this point but that is a serious gut punch 2 weeks in a row, #1 RB and #1 QB. Still feels weird a day later, we won in amazing fashion and yet Malik's injury is just so frustrating. I am saying multiple prayers for Kizer's health this morning at church.......

I don't know, that line has been BK's go to line but come on. We're 6 years in, we shouldn't be taken to the wire by teams like UVA regularly anymore. Yes, once...maybe twice a season you'll be pushed unexpectedly but this game damn near sums up the BK era in 60 minutes. Sloppy defensive play, getting torched by some nobody QB with a weak arm, injuries, head scratching play calling, zero ability to stick with the run consistently, etc. We'll probably lose to a scrub Pitt team and be pushed by UMASS too. I don't know what it is, but BK doesn't seem to have the goods to take us over the top. He's starting to remind me of a less successful Mark Richt.

So who do you want? Gus Malzahn? Brett Bielema?

I'm not on the "fire Kelly" bandwagon by ANY stretch of the imagination, BUT let's not act like there aren't options. I'm not so naive as to believe we could go out and get Meyer, Saban, Stoops, or anyone like that, but why not a Fitzgerald or Mendenhall? There are a couple of guys who managed to do more with less. I think we could also target Strong if the timing is right. Again, not calling for BK's head, but I think the "there's no one else" talk is just a bit off.

Fitzgerald despises ND. Hell will freeze over before he would even consider speaking to ND.

People tend to change their tune real quick when money/power are involved. HC at ND would mean a lot more to his professional cache than HC at NW. Not saying it's likely, I'm just saying I wouldn't write him off because of that. Weirder things have happened.

Because we're better off with what we have. Maybe Kelly is not elite, but neither are those guys. You don't fire Kelly unless you can get the next Saban or Meyer, and those guys aren't that.

Dear God, SOMEONE please actually ready what I'm saying - I'm not saying get rid of Kelly!!! lol I'm addressing those who say we have no other options after Kelly. I don't want to fire Kelly. I think he's the guy. I DO want to fire BVG, however, but that's another story for another tired thread. All I'm saying is that those who believe it's Kelly or bust might be exaggerating. He's the best man RIGHT NOW, but if he goes, as long as we have Swarbrick, we'll be OK with someone like one of those two guys.

Kelly needs to be a permanent fixture IMO, with the following caveats:

1) Let Sanford call plays all game long, and do his thing. You don't even know what you really have there yet Coach.
2) Put BVG on an improvement plan. Highlight what metrics you want to see improved, and let him fix those deficiencies or go elsewhere
3) Find a new Tony Alford

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I am curious to hear WHY you want VanGorder fired?

Because either a) his scheme is getting flat out beat or b) we don't have the horses to do what he does best. He either needs to dumb it down so out athletes can athlete or he needs to go. Obviously, we can't just refill the cupboard through draft or free agency since this is college. What does that leave us? Recruiting. What doesn't BVG seem to be very effective at. Recruiting. Seems like a vicious cycle. Where's the light at the end of this tunnel?

I think that by now we should see some progress and I'm not sure we do. Maybe this year's sample size is still too small, but yesterday seemed like a lot of the same from last year. Hoping that he shows adaptability this week against GT and surprises myself and half (more?) of this board.

Where were you last week, when his scheme was only giving up 163 total yards to Texas? It seems like his scheme was good enough, and not beyond the capability of the players, then? Since when is BVG not effective at recruiting? He has been involved in recruiting the following players:

Nyles Morgan
Daniel Cage
Greer Martini
Kolin Hill
Pete Mokwuah

Not a list of All-Americans, but not an "ineffective" list, either.

Greer was committed long before the 2013 season even started I thought.

"We simply can't have nice things"...funny this thread's name, swear I said that 50 times last night. There is nothing worse than a broken ankle, people sometimes are never the same.

It is what it is. Kizer is no punk. Looking forward to seeing how good he is this year.

I was tempering my expectations after a dominating win over a seemingly putrid Texas team - or at least a putrid Texas effort. As for those guys, which one am I supposed to be impressed with? Morgan maybe, but jury is still out as the SCHEME appears to be too much for him a this time - but that was more BK than BVG in landing him anyway. Cage has been a godsend given the Jones loss, but the rest are complete non-factors this year. All indications are BVG is not very involved in recruiting, no matter how bad you may want that not to be the case. So please educate me as to how BVG is NOT a problem?

Let's get one thing straight: I'm NOT contending that BVG is a great recruiter. I simply asked you to clarify your statement that he is not an effective recruiter. This is the first that I can remember anyone questioning his recruiting.

I think it's been questioned on more than one occasion and I have heard the sentiment on multiple sites, not just this one. Maybe I'm wrong - would LOVE to be wrong.
