To clarify, I'm not being dismissive of Hayes. I think he's an outstanding LB prospect. I just don't see it at DE? For instance, I keep seeing guys say you can't teach that SIZE...as a DE he would be average at best. He certainly wouldn't be using his size advantage on much larger offensive lineman. He size and athleticism make him an elite LB prospect. I don't know why anyone would want to move him other than the fact that he's 250 lbs. That's the entire argument.

By the time he has a year under his belt in a D1 weight training program, he could easily be 275 -- too big for LB and perfect for a DE. All these recruits develop physically and that usually means added size, you have to project beyond his HS stature. His athleticism and the strength that the additional weight would bring could make him elite with his hand in the dirt.

I believe it's a poor one but you may be correct. Let's wait and see three things, the last two helping us determine who was right:

1. Does he sign with ND?

2. Does he switch to DE or stay at OLB in college?

3. How effective is he in his position?

Until then, it's simply conjecture.

not all players can add 25 lbs of good weight, his frame could already be maxed out for all we know. I don't think there's really a place for him a 4-3, kid needs a 3-4 defense so he can play OLB and rush the passer. Of course he will need huge amounts of coaching in pass rushing first

also of note as some have posted on other forums stating that he will have issues w/ transcripts due to moving so much....

he is set to EARLY ENROLL and has worked very hard to position himself to be an ee----per loy

Fair enough. I think it is safe to say that it is conjecture with every recruit until they show up and demonstrate what they can do against D1 competition. I, for one, hope that the answer to No. 1 is "yes" because with this guy's athleticism he has as good a chance as any recruit in this cycle of being a solid contributor whether he stays at OLB or lines up at DE.

Agreed and I want him at DE ;)

Anyone want to bet some vbucks? I got a billion vbucks this answer is no.

its the classic win-win bet. If i'm wrong, the kid comes to ND, if I'm right, I come up on some vbuck $$$$

I'll take you up on the bet. One billion says he lands here. Like most things I'll probably forget. But remind me if I lose. Go Irish!

I'd go a step further. He plays linebacker at ND. All my the vbucks. B&g podcast has him down to 238lbs.

According to the twitter folks he played really well today.

Ashame Diaco isn't still our D coordinator. If we moved back to a 3-4 him and Claypool would be perfect OLBs.

I've long been partial to a 3-4 regardless of DC. Just like people complain about ND not being able to consistently recruit top flight DL, coaches at smaller schools run 3-4's specifically because of that. I also like the ability of those tweener LB-DE's, like you stated, to attack the backfield without having to come off the ground. Their advantage is the space they have between them and the OT's.

We still played some last year, just less than the 50/50 split of years prior, you saying more than that?

No. Maybe 40%. Not trying to hijack this thread. But we have better linebackers than we do defensive lineman.

Who would be the zero tech in that? Could be Cage or Tillery, but that puts more responsibility on two of our youngest guys on the line.

I'm thinking we play more 3-4 than people are expecting this year.

IDK... we play a variety of offenses this year. I would like to see Schmidt and Morgan at MLB with Smith at the position he played under Diaco, but not quite sure who would play opposite him. I still think we see the most of the Nickle against most of the teams we face. We are likely to see more 4-3 against Navy, Wake, Virginia IMO. I like we have a variety of personnel to deploy.

Claypool plays offense end of story!

I'm going to speculate not because it's going to happen but because I've been drinking. Claypool ends up at de and Hayes ends up at...wait for it... Receiver!! I'll see myself out.

24/7 released about 50 pictures of recruits during their visit.

Every pick of Hayes shows him smiling wide and having a great time.

After the game he had a long hug w Jaylon on the sideline literally right in front of me after Alma Mater

Per Loy said he's loving his visit. Gilmore spent 15 minutes before kick. Also as the players were finishing "the players walk" into the Stadium, Gilmore, Kelly, and Jaylon each gave him a hug.

I think it's only a matter of time until this kid flips. Manti had a hand in getting Jaylon, now Jaylon will have a hand in getting Daelin.
