In one off-season, Stanley increased his 225-pound bench press repetitions from 18 to 23. His max bench jumped 40 pounds (365 to 405), his max squat leaped 50 pounds (550 to 600) and his body fat is now 20%—a four-percentage-point drop in a year and a seven-percentage-point drop from when he first arrived, essentially equating to losing 20 pounds of fat and gaining 20 pounds of muscle over time. Stanley’s vertical leap is now 30 inches, too. He is outfitted with what Longo calls more “mature muscle mass,” which should permit him to play at a high level for longer.

A lot more good stuff in here.

What in the hell is up with BK's obsession with Deli?

A supportive Juli assured Ronnie that the best decision would come to him in time. She did not know, at that moment, that Notre Dame would come to him first, in the form of a party including head coach Brian Kelly, athletic director Jack Swarbrick, director of strength and conditioning Paul Longo and offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Their intent: to tell the future. “It’s a long season, anything can happen,” Stanley says. “I was worried about the unknowable.”

After ordering in some deli sandwiches, the Stanleys absorbed something like an infomercial. Kelly mentioned how special he thought the 2015 season could be. Swarbrick asked Stanley if he’d had the comprehensive Notre Dame experience he expected. The group laid out Stanley’s academic schedule; his major, management entrepreneurship, would be reclassified after this year, but Stanley was assured that none of the classes he needed to graduate would be phased out.

Because deli sandwiches are delicious and it's easy to chat while eating them.

I know it's way early in his career, but I could easily see McGlinchey having these types of articles written about him in two years. He has to continue to improve his balance, but from everything I've heard his natural athleticism is on par with Ronnie's.

Edit: I could also see Parker Boudreaux superimposing himself onto this SI cover in two months:

After the game I didn't feel we heard as much about Ronnie and his effort as we did about how 're-upping' him was Kelly's smartest off season move.

But his play was beyond dominant in my opinion.

He is faster and much stronger, (functionally stronger) than last year. His feet are one of a kind, er, (two of one kind???) Do with that what you will!

Some words about another player after the game show the pay-dirt ND hit with securing Ronnie Stanley's services :

Irish offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley said that Adams’ maturity was a key to his college-debut success.

“It takes a lot of maturity and a lot of mental toughness to be in a situation like that and perform well,” Stanley said of Adams striking immediately on entering the game for Folston. “College football is very different from high school football. It’s a very different environment. To go in there and perform like he did is a testament to his maturity. He knew what he had to do and went out there and executed the game plan, and it worked out.

“We felt for Tarean. You never want a player on our team to get hurt. Josh came in and didn’t blink and eye, and performed like he should. That’s how everyone expected him to perform or else he wouldn’t be in that position, and we wouldn’t put him in that position. Josh is definitely a player who will grow and be a great running back. A lot of these freshmen are going to provide weaponry for us.”

I love both of these kids. Actually, I love all of these kids. What a great group; what a great team!

I know we need 11 more demonstrations, but, "If this season proceeds the way it started, this team doesn't have one player in a Manti, but it has Manti in a dozen players! (or more)"

Did anyone see the online clip that didn't make the Showtime episode about Ronnie apparently relinquishing his Captaincy? BK said it was unfortunate that clip leaked but that Stanley was still a Captain in his eyes. Anyone know what happened?

I think it has been discussed on the Showtime thread but haven't had a good chance to read through it yet. Might want to check there.

Watching the presser, it's very hard to hear the question but if you turn the volume up, the question was:

"Brian, there was a video clip of the Showtime series that showed you talking to the team with Ronnie Stanley saying he couldn't accept his captainship, and he mentioned making a mistake but he loved the team, and we had spoken to him and he had said it won't change the way he leads but he wanted to be a captain."

Kelly responded, in part, "I have no problem with Ronnie representing our football team. His integrity and his character is not in question here."

So Ronnie just said he couldn't be a captain because of "parking".

In my experience, the most fascist group on any college campus are the people in charge of parking. This does not surprise me.

Maybe he meant 'parking' as in him and a chic and a car somewhere getting caught. Parking his bus in her garage.
