How do we land Ishaq Williams, Aaron Lynch and Stephon Tuitt in ONE class and then struggle so mightly to find a difference maker as an end

Man, I have to agree with you here. It's been frustrating after that haul to see where we have struggled in getting Five star Defensive Line studs since. It just makes me appreciate that certain class even more. The potential and talent of those three alone was epic. I was hoping for momentum after that class but have been kind of disappointed. I guess some of us were hoping for that kind of haul to continue. We just need to win and be more consistent in doing so. Im hoping for an awesome ten plus wins kind of season where we put ourselves out there as THE Place to be. We have a ton of talent right now. Its time to sell ourselves as a stable national powerhouse that kids will want to flock to. Winning this season will definitely go a long way! We have the players to do it too.

Wondering the exact same thing. However, in defense of the staff:

2010: Nix
2011: Tuitt (IW is a bust and Lynch transferred)
2012: Day, Jones (if they stay healthy will be very productive and get drafted)
2013: Rochelle (Vanderdoes was a huge get....for a day...)
2014: Too early to tell, but Hayes had a nice offer list and should have a good career
2015: Again, too early, but Tillery is all the rage in that class
2016: TBD

One solid DL per year is better than none, but I agree when comparing to 2011...how did they land three 5* DL in one class, yet seemingly struggle every year to land just one instant-impact type player? Perhaps it's as simple as top 5 DL typically aren't a fit at ND on a yearly basis. Idk.

Looks like we better have HH start recruiting the defensive line.

IN GENERAL, look at the top defensive ends, tackles....they are all the rage now and they have been coveted by the sport...they are high demand in NCAA, NFL and with that it brings some WR mentality which generally doesn't work out w/ ND and their 4 for 40 speech

I get that getting a DL from SEC country is always tough... but when we fail to land the ones from MI or Kansas... its frustrating... I truly believe a dominant defense starts with the DL and it seems like we are going to be extremely thin after this year

The staff agrees. That's why they took a dominant LT and moved him to DT.

Let's see what some winning does.

I am concerned about BVG and defensive recruiting. Hopefully the assistants can pick up the slack. It's pretty clear to me that the offensive side of the ball is well ahead in this respect.

Two of the three never lived up to all the hype. The third one had one very good year, but finished his career with a combination of weight and nagging injury issues. The use of Diaco's 3-4 resulted in players adding weight and bulking up to the point where Tuitt was really a third defensive tackle. By the end of his ND career he was carrying too much weight and had lost the quickness shown in his earlier career at ND.

I suspect that before he is done Andrew Trumbetti will out perform them all.

The ironic thing is that Diaco forced a square peg into a round hole with Ishaq. Meanwhile, Lynch is thriving at that same OLB position in the pros eventhough he played DE in college.

(Someone correct that if it's wrong. Too early to look it up for verification.)

i guess to make up missing on elite guys ND is gonna need to take a bunch of projected guys or guys who stop the run or rush the passer but not both.

Ishaq's problem was more that he wasn't really that good (I hope he comes back and proves that statement wrong). From a pure measurables standpoint he was the prototype for the CAT linebacker spot.

I had an intestinal bug earlier this week that this thread reminds me of, quite strongly.

Just kind of rumbled around without going anywhere, felt like a blender inside, set to frappe, and didn't have a whole lot of productive output.

He wasn't a good outside linebacker. We have no idea if he is a good defensive end. In the limited amount of snaps we've seen with him having his hand in the dirt, he actually looked quite explosive.

Agreed. Nobody knows if he's a good football player or not at this point. Even if he was truly overrated coming out of high school he still has the physical skill set to be a breakout player.

...and whoever said Lynch was a bust as a recruit is way off. The point was they recruited him and they got him. Add to that he briefly produced which wasn't really the point. If ND landed a a Lynch every other year and half of them left you'd still have a an All-American level guy on your roster every year.

So the fabled plus and minus (for each school) notebook his father carried on every visit turned out to just be an accounting ledger? Thats a let down.

perhaps a win at Clemson, and a trip to the playoffs will make this young man question some things.
