To me it sounds like his family "issues" have been keeping him from giving 100% at ND and instead of finishing what he started here, he'd rather do it somewhere else. No idea why that would be unless, he's in a big hole academically or the coaches have let him know that he has a long way to go. Personally I think this is about football. I think he realizes that this season will be a wasted season for him as he's not currently in the rotation so why not sit our a year, and get to a school where you can get some PT at. Essentially ND was the holding school while his family stuff got worked out.

I could see that. Didn't he have some family stuff too that had him wanting to stay close to home for college when he was being recruited?
It's too bad, but if the place isn't for him, that's OK. Wish him the best and move on.

Best of luck Jhonathan.

Honestly I know a lot og you guys loved this signing, but I never saw it. Never saw it in his HS film, never saw it in what I have read about him this past year.

Don't think Williams would have played for a year or two more, but losing Bo Wallace also hurts depth. I loved Wallace.

I live less than 10 miles from his high school and had serious concerns that at the lowest level of Michigan high school competition (his school probably has less than 150 kids per class year), he didn't jump of the page for you. He was an excellent player, but he wasn't even considered a top ten player all time from the area. This is rural farm town stuff. Zero NFL talent has come from Berrien county. He won't either, imo.

But I do wish him well and hope he finds a program that helps him maximize both his intellectual and athletic potential.

With Williams transfering and Bo Wallace not coming, how many DEs will the staff be recruiting? Is it 3 or 4 now? Hope they can at least grab one sooner than later.

Staff recently told '16 DE Annetenous Clayton that they were taking 4.

Despite Williams' departure, I doubt that number will rise. 5 DE's just seems like bad scholarship management.

Joique Bell is from BH. But he is literally the only one I can think of in history from Berrien County.

But the point of your post is still spot on and I agree completely. Wish him well whatever the future brings.

Matthias Farley will lead this team in sacks, mark it down

This post has a little bit of everything, including a touch of indigestion. 'Tis why Ireland is the land of saints, scholars, and inebriated sports fans.

My guess would be academics.

If it's not football related and he is worried about PT, why would he transfer and have to sit out a year like he will now.

Good luck to him.

Jhonny, a chara,

I was glad when you chose the Irish, and am sorry you are leaving. You are the only one that knows yourself well enough to decide this.

Because of my respect for myself, I will give you the same respect and tell you that I will not attempt to oversimplify who you are, critique and judge what I see as your motives, when your real motivation is unknown to anyone but you. Good luck going forward!

And finally, let me apologize for the crass and base among ND fans that have to act like they can "know" your motivations, and have the right to judge them. I hope this doesn't sour your experience at ND too greatly.

Beir bua agus beannacht,

Bogtrotter

Apparently requested a release to Michigan and had it granted by ND. So strange for so many reasons.

he wanted to be closer to home...

Ann Arbor is NOT closer to his house.

EDIT: What to clarify about it being strange is that...
1. If the idea is that he wasn't good enough to make an impact here, it seems awfully odd that he'd transfer to Michigan and not some MAC program.
2. If the idea is to be closer to home, there is nothing closer to "home" than Notre Dame.
2A. There have been weird cryptic statements about his mom not being at home or something going on there... who knows.
3. There have been weird statements about him being a "good kid" but a "bad fit" made by reporters, coaches, and Williams himself... what does that actually mean if it's not coach speak?

Has the reason for his departure become clear? Academics, must be?

I know he tweeted about not being the right fit, but hmm. Would someone chime in if i missed it?

Ann Arbor is NOT closer to his house.

Literally 5x further to Ann Arbor than to South Bend, to be exact. It's roughly analogous to living in the White House and going to VCU in Richmond rather than Georgetown.

Sorry next time I'll clarify sarcasm.

From Keith Arnold's recent article about "academically-at-risk" players:

“And we have to provide all the resources necessary for them to succeed and don’t force them into finding shortcuts.”

That could mean eliminating some things that have long been considered staples of student-athlete life on campus. Like a 15-credit fall course load, when football players have the opportunity to take six credits each summer, putting them on track for a ridiculous 3.5-year graduation path.

Or some minor adjustments to the First Year of Studies—a culture shock for student-athletes who didn’t exit high school with a stack of AP Credits and as part of National Honor Society. If you’re looking for a reason why the Irish football team has had a transfer every season for 30 years running, don’t look much farther than the first-year curriculum.

Not sure if that applies to Jhonny, but it might. There have been plenty of nebulous comments about ND being a poor cultural fit for him. So it's possible that he's academically eligible but still struggling with the class work. Regardless, Michigan will insulate him in ways that ND didn't, so hopefully he's more comfortable there.

This is what I've been told.

As I stated a couple times in this thread, a mutual friend told me he was struggling all last year with grades but eventually got them up but it was definitely tough for him.

I wasn't sure how close my buddy was with him but he tipped me off the day after he announced he'd transfer that he was in talks with Michigan so I have decided to trust him from now on when it comes to Jhonny haha. Also said he was talking to Miami (FL) and a JUCO in Mississippi. And since then I've heard Toledo and Missouri also. I believe he was committed to both Toledo and Mizzou before he ultimately chose ND.

Whatever school Jhonny chooses...I hope the best for him. He seems like a great kid despite a childhood that could have doomed a lot of kids...from everything I've been told.
