An Atlanta Falcons player is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s dog, Gwinnett County police said Friday afternoon.

Prince Shembo, 23, has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

On April 19, Denicia Williams called police to report that her former boyfriend had killed her Yorkie, named Dior. Williams told police she had taken Dior to Shembo’s home at a Mall of Georgia apartment complex four days earlier, according to police.

At some point during her stay, Williams left Shembo and her dog unattended. When she returned, Dior was unresponsive, she told police.

Williams took the dog to Duluth Animal Hospital, where Dior died shortly after her arrival.

The following day, Shembo allegedly made comments to Williams about killing the dog, and she broke up with him, she told police.

A necropsy was conducted at Gwinnett County Animal Shelter, and tissues samples were sent to the University of Georgia for further testing, according to police. Dior had significant internal injuries and the cause of death was blunt force trauma, veterinarians determined.

The dog had a fractured rib, fractured liver, abdominal hemorrhage, thoracic hemorrhage, extensive bruising and hemorrhage in the muscles in her front leg and shoulders, head trauma, hemorrhage and edema in lungs, hemorrhage between the esophagus and trachea, and hemorrhage in the left eye with internal injuries, police said.

Shembo was charged Friday with aggravated cruelty to animals, but was not in custody Friday afternoon.

Shembo, a linebacker who played at Notre Dame, was a fourth-round pick for the Falcons in 2014. He had 59 tackles in 16 games last season.

Although he was never charged, Shembo was investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting a Saint Mary’s College freshman in his dorm room in 2010. The 19-year-old woman, Lizzy Seeberg, killed herself 10 days later by taking an overdose of the antidepressant Effexor.

Animal Cruelty is defined as: “causes death or unjustifiable physical pain or suffering to any animal by an act, an omission, or
willful neglect. Willful neglect means the intentional withholding of food and water required by an animal to prevent starvation or
dehydration.” This is a misdemeanor with a fine up to $1000 and/or imprisonment for up to 1 year. A second or subsequent conviction
carries of fine of up to $5000 and imprisonment for up to 1 year. A second or subsequent conviction which resulted in the death of an
animal will be a misdemeanor of “a high and aggravated nature” with imprisonment for a minimum 3 months, maximum 12 months
and/or a fine up to $10,000.

Aggravated Cruelty is defined as: “knowingly and maliciously causes death or physical harm to an animal by rendering a part of such
animal’s body useless or by seriously disfiguring such animal.” This carries imprisonment of minimum 1 year, maximum 5 years, and/
or a fine up to $15,000. Exemptions are made for agricultural, animal husbandry, butchering, food processing, marketing, scientific,
research, medical, zoological, exhibition, competitive, hunting, trapping, fishing, wildlife management, or pest control practices or the
authorized practice of veterinary medicine

Anyone with a dog knows how loving they can be, we have a Yorkie 7 1/2 pounds of unconditional love for everyone who comes up to her. This type of behavior just doesn't compute.
