I've never been more jacked when we landed a recruit so I hope he comes back and puts it all together.

My excitement was that we got Lynch, Tuitt, and Ishaq in the same class. Which is unheard of. It's unreal how that all panned out...

I really hope:

1) Ishaq gets to come back and play next year
2) BK starts landing some more elite pass rushers again

Im just wondering how realistic it is for him to really compete at the level that some of you have in your minds that he is capable of. He has gone a year without as much as looking at a playbook and we have no idea if he even is in physical shape. I have heard nothing about him being a weightroom warrior or exercise machine like KVR. When he was monitored year around and given the best athletic performance opportunities available...well lets face it he didnt exactly blow the doors off anyone. He only started when there were few to zero options and did not make an impact short of drawing the attention of the opponents OT.

IMO highly, highly overrated coming out of HS and just never developed No way he comes remotely close to beating out what we have at DE and what we have right now isnt worldbeating by any stretch of the imagination.

Sail the ship, turn the page, on with the show. Nothing more to see here. Maybe never was.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. I'm not disagreeing that he hasn't lived up to the hype, but for 3 years he was also asked to be a round peg in a square hole. He's always been a 4-3 DE and that's where he fits best. When he was somewhat effective as an OLB it was when he had his hand in the dirt. He was also playing behind a future NFL player in Shembo during his time. So, Senior year rolls around, Shembo is gone, and Ishaaq was slated to start in at DE in the new 4-3 that BVG brings in. That would have been his opportunity to really shine if it was ever going to come, it was the best scenario for him. He very well could have had a break out year last year, but at the same time he may have done nothing at all, we can't say. He certainly had a better opportunity to live up to his potential last year than any previous year.

That's our fault. We have a tendency to create expectations for a kid and if he doesn't meet our expectations he's a bust.

As long as he didn't become a fat ass like just about every other dlineman has done since Kelly got here. I wouldn't be surprised if he lead team in sacks, him or okwara now that there's a dline coach who might actually have a clue. Rochelle should be on inside, he's just a bull rusher with no side2side ability. Day should have lost that gut and moved to de, where is future potential is imo. Hill should only be playing de, not wasting time at lb/de. De training all day everyday with Gilmore.

C'mon Bogs really? Rochell is better than Tuitt? Tuitt almost broke Tuck's single season sack record. In two years Tuitt had 19.5 sacks, 22 TFL's, 4 forced fumbles, and scored scored 2 defensive TD's.

Day's listed 6'2'' is generous. He doesn't have the necessary length to play DE in the NFL.

Yea, Day is a prototype 3 Tech DT. There's been some of talk from those that follow ND football (Coach D mainly) that Day would be better for this team at DE. That doesn't mean its his best projected position on any other team. He's taking into account things like trying to keep him healthy and the way that BVG used him last year. BVG isn't having Day get up field as much as we previously might have thought and his best asset is his quickness and get off which isn't being utilized. He thinks putting Rochell at 3T for this scheme would utilize his strength and holding the point of attack and Day would have a more success rushing from outside. In the NFL, teams won't draft Day if they don't think he can hold up or is the right fit at 3T for their respective systems.

Why does everyone leave out Trumbetti when talking about our DE's?

He was a top 100 overall recruit that started 12 of 13 games last season (missed one because of injury) as a true freshman. Looked very good at times with 5.5 TFL and a sack. He played in a rotation that took a lot of reps away from him too. He is a virtual lock to start this season and I think it's reasonable to expect a protypical sophomore breakout season from him. Yet, his name never comes up?

I don't see Day being a 1st round talent (or at least hasn't shown it yet), but I could see him as a day 2 prospect. He's clearly a natural 3 tech, I don't think he was ever going to be the next great edge rusher.

Whoa whoa whoa, I'm a member of the Trumbetti fan club ;). My post was just in reference to Rochell being the best DE since Tuck and as of now thats not even close with Tuitt. I definitely think Trumbetti will be an impact player for us this year and beyond. In fact, the redshirt "mistake" that was Okwara won't seem like such a big deal after all because the DE's from that class will be fully ready to play a lot and very well, IMO.

Also, in the other scenario above Day would be at SDE at Trumbetti at WDE.

I ignored him in my post cuz he already is a DE, mine was mostly about guys id rather be de or not.

If Day gets destroyed all year like he did in spring game he wont get drafted at all. I am however just gonna ignore how badly the 1st team dline played, cuz I refuse to believe that the hype of tillery=what he also looked like in spring game. Or better yet just pretend ND is going to yield the greatest oline in history of football. Well the starters anyways cuz 2nd team oline got abused.

So basically what im saying is, I think Ishaq would be a huge asset and hopefully gets back on team.

One season. Had he stayed for four, yes. But as a life long ND fan, I feel that I have the right to dock any player who leaves early, (for no good reason.) That class had three. And that is why they didn't make the waves the class before them did. Tuck left early, yes. But he brought the team up! I don't think anyone could accuse Tuitt, Niklas, Wood, or even big Lou of that. And now you made me think about Lynch, and I just threw up a little in my mouth.

AND, Tuitt with his priceless freshmen antics cost a red-shirt on Kona Schwenke, don't get me started. ND has had some guys under Kelly with beau coup talent, but what kind of team players? Huh?

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rGIY5Vyj4YM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

(One could argue that Kappy deserved that distinction if Tuitt didn't, but I was on a rant, making a point, lol!)

What? The Spring Game this year? Jones didn't play and Day hardly played! Considering how the O-Line looked, I thought the youngsters that played looked okay. They were totally dumbed down this year, none of the exotic stuff from last years Spring Game, or did I miss something?

Tuitt and Nix absolutely brought the team up in that 2012 season. They were both ridiculously good that year, helping take the team to the title game. They allowed Manti to be Manti. I don't see how it can be argued that they didn't help bring the team up that year. The following season? Not so much.

Tuitt is the best DE I've seen at ND since Tuck IMHO.

How about that USC game in 2013? I'm not sure I've ever seen a DL control a game for a half like Tuitt (and co.- but mostly tuitt) did. I'm still amazed that we won that game without playing offense in the 2nd half.

Sorry but this has absolutely nothing to do with Rochell being a better Dlineman than Tuitt, period. I'm disappointed in the way things ended as well but even his Junior year he was more productive than Rochell has ever been. And no Kappy, not even remotely close could someone argue he deserved it. Tuitt was the second most important reason the 2012 D was statistically the best in the country going into the NCG. I guess you can make up whatever characteristics you like for what makes a player the best but that's not the real world. Real world is production and he's the most productive DL since Tuck. End of story.

Side note you seem to have a real hard on for a few of those guys that left early, that's your prerogative. But again it has nothing to do with the actual player/production. Lastly, it's funny we're having this conversation as we embark on a season where this team is in search of pass rushers that we don't currently have. Our best pass rusher since Tuck is Tuitt.

Victor Abiamiri's stats compare to Tuck's pretty favorably, as well. That's not to say that Tuck wasn't better, and certainly had a better NFL career; but in terms of college production, the two were not that far off.

Good point, can't leave him out of the conversation. He was very productive at ND.

Yeah. If you don't think Louis Nix "brought the team up" in 2012, I don't know what team you were watching. Tuitt was fantastic as well. 2013 was a different story, for various reasons. Neither emerged to be the kind of leader that we needed - that KLM had been and that Day appears to be - but let's not minimize what they brought.

As for Ishaq, sure he's been underwhelming but there's absolutely no downside that I can see to having him on our team this season. A lot of upside if he can finally turn it on and be the disruptive pass rusher we really need. I don't really understand the negativity around here on him.

Bold = Agreed!

I have a thing about consistency and improvement. Both of those guys went radically down hill in '13. I don't know why; do you have a clues as to why?

Tuitt is an absolute freak, and may be one of the better DE's in the NFL before he is done, but in college, I put a lot more emphasis on an athlete being a team player. I won't argue with anyone who sincerely believes that, but I will never agree, either . . .

Nothing about the person, everything about my disappointment in a player with whom the sky is the ceiling!

2 parts, injury and lack of motivation. Which is why I totally get knocking them some but I'm really glad you don't coach my football team if you actually believe Rochell is better than Tuitt, at least from what we've seen thus far.

I think it's very hard to make this statement without being in that locker room. But if we want to go that route, who's a better LB Schmidt or Smith? Schmidt is the better leader. Intangibles are important but when production is so glaringly different (Tuitt/Rochell) I have a hard time seeing this as a rational thought.

After posting I thought that Schmidt and Jaylon is not a good example but the point remains.

Nothing will be official until the middle of June, but it is looking more and more likely that defensive end Ishaq Williams will not be returning to Notre Dame in the fall
