Sounds like their is a lot of negative recruiting coming from MSU regarding ND's academics. It sounds like we are fighting that battle with more than just Robertson.

With the dismissal of high profile players in consecutive seasons its a very real pitch for those kids that have to try real hard in the classroom. Where MSU and other schools won't put that academic pressure on you, ND does.

IF you were a recruit, how freaking insulted would you be...i cannot believe neg recruiting like this EVER works (i know it does) but you might as well call them stupid

The pitch is: "Go to a great state school that hundreds of thousands of people in this State are proud to have attended. Notre Dame is a great school, no doubt, but its hard enough that its going to distract you from football. Football is your specialty. Some kids excel in language, some kids in science, some in art, you are a special athlete. If you were training to be a professional musician, you wouldn't need to have an MIT level calculus program on your resume, and you don't need to be competing with future mathematicians. What you needt is the best music instructors and an excellent overall education. That is what we offer you here: the best football coaches in the Midwest and an excellent overall education."
If you were a recruit's parents, you think that the State school is completely adequate (maybe you went there, or maybe you couldn't even get in there!). I am not sure if I would be insulted to hear, "for a kid striving for the NFL, Harvard is just too intense academically. Your son could hack it, but its going to come at a cost: his development as a football player. We strike the right balance here at ND."

Exactly, and they'll pull all sorts of stats and information that support their points. And while I don't like it, its a very real issue for some of these kids.

I did pretty good in school, but I would not have wanted to go take math classes at MIT or Stanford! Humility!
As pointed out above, the real issues are:
(1) ND graduates kids at a HIGHER rate than other schools! It is harder, but the support system is much better.
(2) the chances that you don't have a long career in the NFL are like 95%. So your career training in football is--more realistically--career training to be an assistance high school football coach!

If he's serious about considering life after football, then I've still got hope we can land him. We just need to sit him down next weekend and show him the numbers. Also, I don't want us to engage in any negative recruiting, but I wouldn't mind if we highlighted MSU's name when we showed him the life time earnings numbers and the grad rate for African American football players. I also like the fact this is his mom's first trip, our academic staff kills it with the parents.

Similar to Mack, those around him are in ND's corner. Unlike Mack, I remain somewhat optimistic we can still get Auston

I wouldn't consider that negative recruiting as long as it's presented properly. I also believe the staff knows the competition they are up against and is quite prepared to show them all of the facts and figures.
We also need to keep in mind that there are plenty of good kids who just don't want to be pushed that hard academically. For them, they're just looking for a degree to fall back on.

Exactly. Also they say 'sure, you're a smart kid and can handle it. But chances are, some knuckleheads will screw up and your entire season will get blown up because ND goes nuclear whenever something happens.
These kids only have 4 years to play and we have kids that have had TWO seasons blown up during their careers.
