Pretty rare we lose a head-to-head battle with MSU on a kid we really want.

Gotta like that his top 3 are ND, MSU and OSU and the things he's looking for in a school are academics, schools networking and connections and relationships with the coaches. The first 2 seem like slam dunks for ND...now just gotta hope Elston, Gilmore and BK stay on him and keep the relationships going.

Also, from that interview he seems like a real humble and soft spoken kid. I'll be rooting for him no matter where he ends up going to school. Really hope it's ND tho.

unfortunately wiltfong has the cb for msu, shannon terry just put a cb in for msu...and every other cb has been for msu since 3/8...except for Loy and a bama guy who of course picked bama

mike frank also thinks that people have gotten into his ear regarding the tough rigors of academics at ND...citing the amount of people suspended due to academic issues

Sucks if true. Loy and Auston addressed this directly in that video tho. Auston said he talked with Jaylon about the rigors of ND academics and also went over the academic side of things with the coaches, I believe and what kind of help/tutoring he would receive.

I realize he probably wouldnt just say "no, ND sounds too tough for me", but he made it seem like it was of no concern at all after his last visit and it seemed like it was something he wanted to get answers about from the coaches/players so I could definitely see the possibility that people got in his ear about ND being too tough academically. Hopefully he got the answers he wanted about that issue specifically, if it was one.

Thanks for keeping my expectations down a bit haha. That interview had/has me optimistic about the possibility of landing him.

Lots of crystal balls to MSU, but there's still a lot of time. Just keep plugging away.

Not a lot of difference to me in him and Okwara. Won't be heartbroken by his decision. I do think we need to bring in two more guys despite the small class.

I think he has a higher ceiling than Okwara. Also, it's a must to keep the top instate prospects at Home at Notre Dame. Would hate to see a top three Indiana 4 star prospect go to Sparty.

I would agree with all of this.

i'm probably wrong saying this, but it seems like sparty wants him a little more than we do.

could be a situation where we're fishing for some bigger fish.

again, this is based off nothing

Yeah I just don't see many "fish" that are bigger right now. I just think he likes the sparty defense and isn't interested in "playing school".

Doesn't MSU take their academics a little more seriously than most other elite programs though?

I don't know if there's any evidence of that. Awhile ago, MSU was notorious for letting criminals stay on their team and such. They've got a GSR of 70% and a FGR of 54%... nothing to write home about, that's for sure.

Wasn't it Malik McDowell's parents that overheard a conversation he was having with some of the players where they basically said they don't do anything for school. The impression I've got from Robertson is they've convinced him that they will "guide or help" him with his academics as much as possible.

Thanks, guys. If this is the case then I stand corrected. Not sure why I was under the impression that MSU ran a more academically-moral program than that.

So he's visiting next weekend. That's cool.

It is great that the door still seems to be ajar. What's with the name Purpleface Kelly? Should we put you on troll-alert? I like that Kelly shows some emotion on game day. He's Irish...Irish dudes face turns red when they yell...can't help it.

I really don't care about the purple face. Bob Knight went purple face but won 3 titles, 5 final fours and an undefeated season in the span of 11 seasons so he got the benefit of the doubt.

Kelly gets purple faced because none of his quarterbacks know how to run his system or protect the ball. A lot of people feel that it can't be all these qb's and Kelly hasn't won anything yet, therefore his temper is perceived as much more of a negative.

Serious question. How many times has Kelly gone full purple face? Was it more than that one game?

Just a few times I think. And like I said, I really don't care as its not a big deal to me. I'm just talking about people's perception.

Back on track.

You can find that academic fraud discussion in the appropriate thread.

I also recommend to not clog the place up with "troll" talk either; it will work itself out shortly.

Josh is strong side, Auston is weak side. If one were to commit, I think it would probably make it even more attractive to the other knowing that there is a quality bookend commit on the other side.

Right around this time last year Auston Robertson made a change for the better.
After a few years of playing wide receiver, safety, tight end and linebacker, Robertson embraced the notion that defensive end would take him to college. He started practicing on the defensive line and impressed at college camps all summer, which led to scholarship offers.
Robertson arrived at The Opening Regional outside Chicago on Sunday as one of the most highly coveted prospects in attendance as a result. And he still has room to grow.
“I’ve learned a lot about how important it is to use my hands and how important your get-off is and your stance,” Robertson said. “You can’t ever stop working and you can’t ever stop learning either. I’m still learning.”
Dozens of programs have offered the four-star prospect from Ft. Wayne, Ind., but only a trio remain in contention. Michigan State, Notre Dame and Ohio State are running out front with a verbal commitment expected on June 7.
Michigan State hosted Robertson last month and the Irish will do so this coming weekend. Recruiting coordinator Mike Elston visited school last week.
“I talk to coach Elston a lot on the phone,” Robertson said. “I talk to him on Twitter a lot. I've talked to coach Gilmore. He was super cool. I’m supposed to be going down there next weekend to show my mom the atmosphere I could be playing at. She’s never been to any of these visits or any of these camps or anything so she really doesn’t know what’s going on. I want to show her.”
Elston has been recruiting Robertson in earnest since offering a scholarship during camp last summer as defensive line coach. Gilmore has just taken over that same position this offseason as Elston shifted to linebackers.
Robertson and Gilmore are continuing to get to know each other.
“We’ve got a good relationship right now,” Robertson said. “We could talk a little more but I’m not mad because he's still settling in to Notre Dame.
But since I’ve been talking to him he seems pretty cool. We started building the relationship process and I got to go into some of the defensive meetings. He treats all his players like they’re his own.”
Robertson remains unsure if Michigan State or Ohio State will receive return visits between now and his planned June 7 announcement date. Michigan State hosted last month.
“I’ve got a relationship basically with all the coaches and they treat me like family every time I go down there,” Robertson said. “I was supposed to go down there last weekend but I had a 7-on-7 tournament. I went the week before that to watch a spring practice. It felt like a home. I’ve talked to a lot of the recruits that are committed already. So if I were to go there I’ve got a relationship already. I wouldn’t be going there by myself.”
Robertson plans to weigh those relationships along with some other key factors over the next month. He and his family will weigh the pros and cons before releasing the commitment at RAS Camp outside Fort Wayne next month.
“Breaking it down is like me looking at my relationship with the coaches and life after college and how much that diploma means,” he said. “That’s pretty much it.”
