Saw a report today saying Nicky was gonna give a go this spring. I figured he was done to be honest. BK says he is giving his everything to be ready for spring. I am not optimistic but he would be much needed back there.

Just curious, but it seems like shoulder injuries seem like a recurring nightmare. After suffering one, you seem to suffer them all the time. I get that you generally tackle with the shoulder, but you'd think that with SHOULDER PADS it would limit some of the impact. What makes shoulder injuries so worrisome compared to other injuries.

The shoulder.... neither creation nor evolution got it right.

It's a crap design. Good luck NB.

Having had a shoulder repaired, I have a hard time understanding how anyone can get back to 100%. Took me a year before I felt like it was any better than pre-surgery.

I'm really rooting for Baratti to make it back. He was one of my favorite recruits in the 2012 class. I'd love to see him have a solid year and shore up the depth at safety.

Same here. I have done most everything I can from PT to surgery and it will seem great then for no reason it will become destable doing mundane things.

The only thing that does that to my shoulder is too much sex, especially with the trampoline lady . . .

I think I was in the pit with him at a Black Flag show in the 80's.

What on Earth does a coach say to him after that complete lack of effort on the 4th down?

I don't agree that there was any lack of effort. It's just another example of a defensive back that can't make a tackle in the open field.

Yep. But he had been sitting all game and hasn't really played a meaningful game in two years.

I must admit I have had the same thoughts running through my head, but;

  • It is amazing to see Baratti on the field at all;
  • Any defensive back coming in the game after Shumate's bullshit targeting ejection had to feel like they had a target painted on their back, (which would have taken away much of the meager advantage a defensive back had in the situation;
  • And, that kid, Jahad Thomas, was an absolute stud maybe the best cutback runner and second most explosive running back to Ronald Jones ND has faced this year!

Herbie was right when he said that Thomas was an amazing cutback runner, maybe the best. And if anything, he didn't give Thomas enough credit for being explosive. But he constantly mentioned how ND was doing a great job limiting him by clogging the lanes at the line of scrimmage.

If that kid had a decent offensive line he may be one of the most productive backs in the nation!

He just wasn't prepared for the moment. It's sad because both Baratti and Tranquill might've been impact players for this team... and both have had their careers completely derailed by injuries. I still remember Baratti making a clutch INT against Michigan in the end zone before everything went off the tracks.

Baratti was badly beaten on that play; he just got bailed out when the pass, thrown by a position player under heavy pressure, was way behind the intended receiver.

No. It was an example of a backup not wanting to blow an opportunity and not being aggressive. Baratti took an outside line to keep the back from turning the corner, instead of taking a more straight line to ball carrier that would have put him in position to make the stop. Once he took the outside line, his fate was sealed.

It was an embarassing attempt at a tackle. Directly led to a TD rather than a stop and could have been the difference in the game. It is not easy to be put in the position Baratti found himself in but players who rarely see the field occassionally are presented with these opportunities and Baratti let his moment slip by him.

Or why not take the outside line and bait the back to cut in and, boom, you're there for the stick. If nothing else make him have to bull you over. My daughter makes that play

When I saw that play my first thought was NB was worried about protecting his shoulder. Tried to arm tackle only...

I am thinking everyone is underrating Thomas' ability.

Herbie called him possibly the best cutback runner out there. He said no one is as good as when he can get going and make one cut.

I would rather have Baratti keep contain, wait for inside support, and look foolish when there was none, that feel incredible butt hurt and feel shame, generate drama, and otherwise mistreat myself for no good reason (if he misses that.) Every play should have someone flowing from the inside, shouldn't it?

I can't think of anyone else that could have made that play in exactly that situation; hell, I doubt Jaylon could have made it!

If Nicky Baratti was that talented, don't you think he would be starting, or at least playing more? That wasn't a one-legged, 75 year old man running the ball, ya know?

I was surprised to see him out there as I though he was on a medical scholarship now.

Posted this in the game thread but I'm not convinced the outside line was the wrong call there...his first job was to keep the guy from getting outside with it, if you force him back in then there's at least a chance that someone else on D can clean it up.
