ND Alum that was a Concensus 2x All-American and played in the show...I will take an entire coaching staff of guys like this. If not Lyght, Bobby Taylor, Jeff Burris, or Shane Walton were my other favorite options for DB coach.

Zorich or Tuck for DL coach
Aaron Taylor or Faine for OL coach

Talk about teaching nastiness in the trenches...those guys would be great additions to the staff as well. Where are they? What are they doing that would be more enjoyable?

Probably for a different thread but, is Quinn from Buffalo coming back to BK's staff on Offense now that LeFleaur is leaving ND for the NFL?

Sounds like college coaching is not for LaFleur, from the article, anyways.

When you are talking about the basis for being a good college recruiter, you are talking about a few no-brainer qualities: coach/recruiter projects a charisma of masculine dependability, honesty, intelligence, a spiritual base, love of the game, high personal standards of excellence, liking of "kids" and people. Todd Lyght would probably come easily equipped with all that.

Then that recruiter has to add high work energy and easily recognized competence at communicating, particularly football knowledge and the bigger picture of life. I assume, whether he once was "shy and quiet" in his youth, that a full man of his accomplishments has left most of that reticence behind.

This hire feels to me like hiring Tim Brown or Justin Tuck --- people who just walk into and fill a room with the aura of "stud" and likability.

Zorich had his run at ND.

By the way, all the guys you mentioned could follow the Lyght path. Lyght's second career was food service . . .

I guess I did know that about Tuck and Taylor. I think coaching at ND would be more fun. I like the idea of tapping alums who have pride in the program and university. It helps teach/spread it on to the new generation of ND players.

Aaron Taylor can stay at CBS. After how he bashed ND for firing Willingham, never want to see him back on campus.

Thanks for the post!

I have to tell you, every time this guy opens his mouth, I am more impressed. It isn't just hair, brains, use of the English language, or even coaching acumen. This guy has a passion for excelling, and winning at the game he loves that is palpable, contagious, and borderline manic!

Max has struggled most his career here, maybe Todd has finally been able to get the most out of him and really connect

I literally have no idea, so someone explain to me why people are so mad at BVG but never mention Todd Lyght? Is the scheme so bad that it clearly not Lyght's fault that the CBs (and safeties, who have better excuses) are under-performing.

I think its valid to question everything that is going on with the defensive staff, as the results are atrocious and players are getting worse. However, I'm going to reserve judgment until the assistants have time to coach there positions without BVG being involved. I'm of the opinion that he didn't allow the assistants to be as involved as maybe they should be.

This is where I'm at as well. If the assistants struggle under another DC, they need to go.

I would tend to agree with this and would cite Keith Gilmore as proof. A couple weeks ago, everyone thought Gilmore was a great coach... now our D line is a tackling sled.

Furthermore, I think BK hires some coaches to develop talent and others to recruit (see Booker, Scott). I always felt Todd Lyght was hired to recruit and indirectly to compensate for BVG's lack of desire to do so. Although the early recruiting returns aren't great, on the whole I would say Lyght is a good recruiter. He also has Bobby Elliot and Jeff Buriss helping him teach, so he cant be that bad.

Is Booker that good of a recruiter? I know he has a tough territory but I was under the impression that he hasn't been that successful. Am I wrong?

I think Booker is the next coach that needs to go. The TE position has become pretty useless since he took over and the Special Teams aren't that great either.

All I want is for a db to take a good angle when approaching a wr or rb. Way too many mistakes on this supposed fundamental

And Gilmore and BVG came to the point of blows how many times? Once on camera.

I am glad someone mentioned Gilmore, because he has produced NFL quality talent wherever he has gone. We experienced that playing UNC once, just before we hired him.

And remember, sometimes morale becomes so bad that folks, especially young folks, stop doing the things they can, not because they can no longer do them, but because they don't want to any longer.

Go back and watch some of the interviews and video of player doing impressions of BVG. I bet you see them in a new light!

BVG held tight control of the defense from the meeting rooms and film evaluation to the field. It was difficult for anyone to really coach.

I'm not buying this at all. I think Light is a serious liability in his coaching style. I get that BVG may have a tight grip on how he wants his D ran, but the team still breaks up for position work EVERYDAY! That is your time to make an impact & Light ain't gettin' it done.
