This bothers me.....and it bothers me a lot!!! I'm not saying PSU didn't deserve punishment, because they did, however, it pisses me off when they lie outright to get what they want, but when kids and programs cheat, they act like it's no big deal. The SEC has had bag men for years, and I wouldn't be a damned bit surprised if Miss St, and Ole Miss are paying a good amount of their kids. The NCAA completely looks the other way on that shit, but drops the hammer on Penn State when they had no jurisdiction to do so. Hypocrisy at its finest.

AMEN!

Well, if Jim Tressel can make the CFB Hall of Fame, I guess everything is on the table.

This annoys me beyond belief..... JoePA allowed this culture to exist... and because his family threatens a law suit, the NCAA backs down.... With as spineless as NCAA is... one has to wonder why it even exists anymore

Or maybe... "hey, we may have overreacted to media pressure and imposed a punishment that did not fit the crime. You deserved to get hammered for what you allowed to happen right under your nose but those things didn't actually impact what happened between the stripes on Saturdays."

Unbelievable how everyone goes out for blood on all the wrong people when these things happen. There was some SERIOUS evil that went down at Penn State but just because it was heinous doesn't mean it had anything to do with wins and losses.

I don't know. I go back and forth. Sometimes hitting people on wins and losses is the only way to make them pay attention. Stuff like this has to be so disincentive-ized that no one would ever consider covering it up.

But yes...serious evil.

It's the picking of which "people" to hit that bugs me. They players, students, fans, and alumni didn't do anything wrong. Maybe vacate them from Paterno's record but not from the team's.

Like I said, I'm of two minds. It's a tough situation and I'm glad it's not my responsibility to dole out punishments.

The players, students, fans, and alumni aren't members of the NCAA. The school is.

PSU provided Sandusky facilities on campus as part of the cover up to protect the school's image ... and not hurt recruiting.

It's sickening that the NCAA has gone spineless once again and essentially lifted all the punishments they initially imposed on PSU. PSU will go on like this situation never happened, while the kids affected by Sandusky will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. Such bullshit.

Maybe you forgot the part about it being a football coach. Or that it happened at the football facilities. Or the fact that the guy who was in charge admitted to not doing enough to stop it. Paterno kept him around he deserved what he got.

I'm so tired of these brainless Paterno fans around here. They're all convinced that he did nothing wrong and did what was required of him. Oddly enough when you ask them if that was their kid did Paterno do enough the opinion changes.

Never liked Penn State growing up. Never was drawn to the allure...etc. Even when ND had hard years...ie Faust, I never once considered jumping on the bandwagon. However, the NCAA was goaded by media to take actions it had NO BUSINESS taking. They ignored their own process. A process that would likely have seen PSU booted out by other member institutions...But NOOOOO, dipshit Emmert had to run out in front of it all, and re-write the rule book. So yea, PSU will walk, The statue will go back up, the wins put back...precisely because the NCAA did not have the fortitude to do it the right way in the first place...so while Joepa can burn in hell, so can Emmert because his dumb ass caused there to be virtually NO realized punishment...bad leader...needs to be removed.

Joe was a stubborn ass that hung on too long. He had the God power to hang on too long, but that is on PSU. I look at this as a cautionary tale though...Joe was not equipped to lead that program because times passed him by...I believe him when he said he thought he did what he was supposed to do, but in hindsight, he should have done more...but I ask you...what man of his years would be equipped to process and deal with such things as they needed to be dealt with. In the end Joe's arrogance got him, and for that he'll burn in hell because the effect was the same as if he was indeed complicit. But here is where I differ from alot of folks...I don't think he was a bad man, or an evil man at heart...just arrogant, which was just enough to find himself in a situation he could not comprehend, and that allowed folks to get hurt.

I love how PSU fans act like old Joe was just an employee there. He ran the show. I also love when they say that Paterno didn't even like Sandusky. Yeah right.

I'm not exactly sure the age that I realized that child rape was wrong, but I imagine that if I'm in sound mind enough to lead a multi-million entity comparable to PSU football, that i'll still know that child rape is wrong.

...He knew it was wrong/bad, he reported it...but the thing is, I don't think he could quite process it all...it was so outside his life's experience, the level of evil was just too much, and I think he treated it like a hot potato...and yea I think part of him didn't believe it because it was so evil. You gotta figure the last time that guy experienced the world as it was...maybe 1965? By his own hand he lived in a very insulated world, and his generation just didn't discuss such things nor did the media present it well, if at all. Comparing him to someone who lived in the real world from 1965 to 2000ish of his age is just not an honest comparison, and it is to ignore the situation in Happy Valley. However, because he was who he was, and he punted it....everyone punted it. I do not excuse leaders who fail for any reason, particularly ignorance or fear of their own making. But I draw the line at ascribing Sandusky's evil to Paterno.

Thanks for the article. I think the author has it right in how he characterized Joepa. I tend to think Joe was just not able to deal with it, and he thinks he purposely ignored it for football. Either way we both think he gets no pass. I separate from the author on the NCAA part. I don't think the NCAA walked away for money...they were going to lose. They knew they 1) did not have the authority to do what they did, and hoped PSU would be shamed into accepting it all. 2) What they did was not necessary. There was indeed a way for PSU to pay, through the other member organizations. PSU could have been sent packing entirely. Jettisoned from the NCAA. And had that happened, I'd have been fine with it. Thems the rules.
