Dog got skunked - advice?

My dog, chipper, went outside this morning looking for ladies and got skunked. Literally.

I bathed the hell out of him but he ran through the house and it stinks now. I'm already an hour late for work so I had to leave. From what I can tell, he's clean but I was so close to it for so long I'm sure there's still residue on him I just can't smell.

More worried about the house. It smells like shit and I popped windows open and left cause I had to.

Any tips? I'm very worried for what it smells like when I get back.

I've never had a skunk encounter and so I didn't know shit about it and didn't have time to google cause the rat bastard was running around so I just bathed him.

Brady Hoke has first hand knowledge about being skunked. And, he would be my first choice to ask for advise. Having greyhounds, and up against a state park, here is a safe and sane solution - couple pints of hydrogen peroxide(store bought, brown bottles), baking soda(1/4,1/2 cup), anything to create a lather, dog shampoo, dish detergent, hand soap, a little dab will do ya. Mix, apply right away, and rinse.

Whatever you do don't wet it. It causes the skunk sauce to absorb into the skin and then the stink lasts weeks/months/years. If I remember right the first step is to wipe the spot with a dry paper towel then apply something like Nature's Miracle following the instructions on the container. Source: had a dog that loved getting sprayed in the face by skunks.

Get a new dog.

I was really hoping nobody would say something cruel and dickish like this...because I was going to. I tip my hat to you.

As for the dog, shave it. I don't know if that would help at all though.

as far as your dog...yea I used tomato products...I used paste because I could really get it on the spots she got hit. Make sure the eyes are flushed good....if it got on the mouth they'll have really good breath for what seems like a month...yuk.

As far as your house...I found someone local that specialized in dealing with the house...they'll assess it, and document what they did...then advise you if you need to make an insurance claim...sometimes carpets and furniture got to go...

I bathed him in a concotion of baking soda, peroxide, and dawn. That ran out, so the rest I used his normal, oatmeal shampoo. I bathed him good and I think he's good for the most part. But my carpet (it's an apartment) got it bad when he ran through the house, wiping his head on the ground.

sounds like new carpet...but it sounds like another decision maker ...gotta get the landlord in the loop...sometimes that's as bad as the skunk smell.

That was the worst part when my dog got it.

She got blasted right in the forehead/eyes, so she came in drooling, blind, and trying to wipe her face off on anything she could feel. The carpet got it good, the couch got it good, and a jacket on one of the kitchen chairs had to be disposed of haha.

My advice is to make sure your coworkers know you were dealing with a skunk issue, that way they don't just think you're the smelly guy at the office or hitting a bowl before work for the next few days, and also to wash any clothes in your house repeatedly until they smell normal.

I was so used to the terrible smell that I didn't realize until three days later that even my clothes that I thought were well protected in my closet had acquired the stench simply from the air in the house. My coworkers were not appreciative.

Gp to your local funeral home they sell something in a aerosol can for bad smelling bodies. Last I remember like 30 per can.

This ^ 100%. Had a black lab that wanted to attack any animal that came into yard and he took a straight shot to the face. I thought he ate a toad because he was foaming at the mouth. So i grabbed him and pulled him into the basement before i even realized the smell. He smelled like burnt rubber and piss much worse than expected. Then drug him upstairs like an idiot and put him on the deck. This was at like 5 am so called into work to take vacation day in like November. It was i think 30 degrees outside and had all 20 windows in our house open. The concoction that was mentioned was only thing that made it tolerable. Tomato juice did nothing and i used 3 family sized cans. Good Luck

Your apartment will smell for a couple days but watch out for your coworkers! My dog got sprayed this year and I went to work and everyone thought a skunk sprayed in the building! Oh and everytime your dog gets wet he'll smell like a skunk for a little bit!

Had this happen to our dog years ago while travelling. We called a vet, who, after he stopped laughing, told us there were only two things that worked, and the dog REALLY wouldn't like one of them. He said the most effective method was to bury the dog in sand up to its neck for 24 hours. Otherwise, he recommended filling a tub with tomato juice and bathing the dog in it. The result was a wet dog, who smelled like a combination of skunk and tomato juice. Not great. By the time we got home (700 additional miles with the fog in the car, we had to throw away all of the clothes we had with us, and air the car out for days. The smell will go away, eventually.

Next time it happens you get him in the bath immediately and use wintergreen mouthwash as your shampoo. Then hit him with your normal dog shampoo.

Thanks, but it won't be happening again. Went with the 'get rid of him' advice.

He'll definitely smell skunky when he gets wet from now on, just keep that in mind. I think every one of my parent's last 3 dogs has been skunked at some point. I should probably lend pop my shotgun.

That hole's not deep enough, especially if it's on your property. Dig a deeper hole or bury him in your mother-in-law's back yard.

Sorry for your skunked dog. Been there. Mine charged a skunk on our porch two years ago and it sprayed her and the wall next to the front door. It was so strong that we could taste skunk for several days. We gave her a regular bath and then used some sort of anti-skunk shampoo the vet gave us, and still had to leave her outside for almost a week. I don't know that there's anything that will completely get rid of the smell except time.
