GK and MN,

I appreciate the thoughtful push-back.

The decision was made after considering (1) whether excessive swearing fits the thoughtful and civil tone we want for the board and (2) whether we were losing more members and thoughtful discussions than we were gaining by keeping the swearing unmoderated. I appreciate that it comes across as pedantic, but we believe that the drop in the level of conversation since we turned off the filter is noticeable and that, to me, is a greater loss than the loss of the ability to swear on the boards.

I definitely hear where you guys are coming from as well. And a filter is certainly not the most preferable solution, but, for the moment, I prefer it to asking the moderators to determine what is and isn't excessive profanity and what does and does not add value to the ongoing discussion. That said, I'm open to hearing the community's thoughts on the best way to strike a good balance.

Personally think the level of conversation dropped off more because of it being the offseason and us needing to keep ourselves occupied more than anything.

Remove the filter from the conclusion of the Rice game thru the conclusion of the UofM game?

Curious-- how did you determine the drop off in conversation was due to the cuss filter being off?

What happens if conversations don't pick up with the filter on?

How do you even track the conversations?

Pham you're my guy but I have to push back a little.

If the vast majority of members of the board are comfortable with cussing and enjoy it, shouldn't the minority be asked to "check out" another board if they don't like it. It's not like we have many (or any) posters who are under 18. We have no female regular posters who may be offended more easily than men either.

I guess I think the purpose of a mod is to filter out any comments that are truly overboard. A filter doesn't help with that. A filter doesn't really eliminate the words being used, they just don't show up visually. We still know what is being said. So I don't get the point.

Could we if things were cleaned up?

I don't have a horse in this race, just an honest thought / question.

Just because most people like something and it isn't hurting anyone, does it make it right, or in the best interest of the board? Just because we don't currently have a number members who would be offended by certain types of posts or language, why would that in and of itself make it okay? If there was a type of posting that disenchanted you from posting and you weren't currently a member, would you think it preferable to keep it going just because you weren't posting or there weren't more posters like you?

You think we might get more under-18 members/posters if you can't cuss on here? I think there are several reasons 14 and 15 year olds don't post on here. The ability to cuss could be a reason, I suppose.

It's definitely not scientific or quantifiable. These are conclusions formed after some observations from a few of the moderators who are familiar with the level of discussion that we would like for the board and who spend a good deal of their time reading through the board as well as after receiving input from long-time members who have decided to post and visit less frequently due in part to the gratuitous swearing and the drop off in the quality of content that they believe coincide with, even if it isn't caused by, that.

All I am saying is that I believe an argument that relies on the idea that a certain act is okay because there are currently no members of a certain faction to potentially offend is inherently flawed, and that it shouldn't be a reason to keep things a certain way. Particularly if it means we could add members who contribute positively to the board (yes, that absolutely includes teenagers and women).

I don't want any teenagers on this forum in general. So if it keeps them away even better! As for women I don't have an opinion other than things always seem to get derailed if a woman posts so maybe it's better if they stay away too.

Let me interject. I am an admitted ****ing asshole. I am a fan of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Robin Williams, Mitch Hedberg and others.

But ****, what the hell is this call for pissing on minority rights? Alexis De Tocqueville had much to say about Democracy in America. Amidst his rambling and slanted ramblings he warned of the "tyranny of the majority." While I agree with his concept, I disagree with the underpinnings and direction of his reasoning.

I'll stop now. Just a point to ponder.

"America, Love It Or Leave It." Another sore point for me.

Obama, is that you?

No, seriously, I definitely agree with you that there is a flaw in believing, "It's fine to cuss on here...there aren't (m)any people under 18 on here.

I think there will always be issues, however, incorporating young people and/or women on to an ND board when 99+% of the members and posters are adult males. Not saying we couldn't or shouldn't have them, but just that are inherent issues in incorporating those demographics on here.

Care to enlighten me on what a 14 year old might bring to the board?

Care to enlighten me why you have to transpose "~18 year old / teenager" and "women" into a 14 year old?

Care to enlighten me as to why you believe your personal board preferences should take priority?

I don't care who is on the other end of the keyboard from me. This is not a boys club, despite what some may think. Sure, that is an avenue some could pursue, but that is not the creed of this board nor the reason and fundamental nature of it's existence.

This is a Notre Dame Discussion forum. I personally want and will welcome anyone who can positively contribute to Notre Dame football discussion, regardless of age or gender. We have had plenty of teenagers on here contribute positively before - several do right now, including some of your 'bros'.

My issue lies in the fact that the ban is completely arbitrary. What makes fuck any worse for a 14 year old to see than:

bitch
hoe
****
damn
asshole
boner
clit
dildo
prick
douchebag
dickhead
slut
damnit
hell

Ect ect ect.... Also as others have said there are an indefinite amount of inapropriate pictures memes and avatars floating around. Turning fuck into **** doesnt do anything to address that problem.

I think a more prudent form of action would simply be to punish those that over step the boundaries and use these words to attack another user. Why take everyones ice cream away when only two or three of us made a mess in the car.

I dont see any way that the inclusion of a single word could have such a negative effect on the quality of conversation. I for one dont even think about the word being allowed anymore. Like others have said 99% of the time the word is being used in conversation as it would in real life. What does bother me is when i look at a funny post or read **** michigan I have to see this **** ****.

Most posters (not necessarily members) come here for ND football news and talk. After that, I'd say the top reason for posters coming here and taking the time to read and type words on their screen and submit them in a thread is because it's their escape from their wives, girlfriends, kids, job, mortgage, bank account, health problems, societal and world problems, etc.

In other words, it's kind of why many men have Poker Night, have weekend trips to Vegas, or join the KC, Masons, Elk Club, etc. It's a safe oasis for like-minded people joined by their love of ND football.

I'm kind of with GK here. While women and 14 year olds can add something of value to this site, I'm not exactly sure what it is. I guess the one exception I can think of is if we get another STL-- a kid that likes to share a lot of recruiting info on here. But then STL got older, and became one of the dudes.

Gattaca - I have absolutely no idea what the filter controls and what it doesn't, but I think the specifics are besides the point. The point of turning it back on, to me, is representative of a shift in philosophy from the top in regards to tolerability of certain patterns of conversation that have been occurring frequently.

Like I said before, I personally don't have an individual problem with cursing, but I do understand that it can turn people off to conversations (not just teenagers or women GK). Specifically, I have seen that many times excess cursing leads to some of the major derailing of threads that I know many posters loathe, and that is a shame.

Hog's post pretty much covers it. I don't have anything to add other than stop trying to portray me as some male chauvinist, even though I am the President of the He-Man Woman Haters Club.

Please show me where I tried to portray you as anything. You made statements, and I asked why. No need to be defensive. Just illustrating my point, as you were trying to do.

This is a good point that I hadn't fully considered. I would entertain the idea of leaving the Lounge a little less filtered than the rest of the board, if that ends up being the right balance between keeping things free flowing while maintaining that desired level of overall thoughtfulness and courtesy. Right now, though, the software isn't quite set up to allow for variable filtering/moderating so I would have to do a little digging to see whether adding that function is feasible. Thoughts on this from the rest of yous?

Yeah I'm sorry but but this is silly... the Internet was made for boobs and cursing. Seems completely ridiculous and could better be handled by warning/moderating discrete displays of posting that crosses whatever subjective line we want to set.
