Offensive Yards by Year:

2011:
Rushing: 2,085
Passing: 3,284
Total: 5,369

2012
Rushing: 2,462
Passing: 2,896
Total: 5,358

2013
Rushing: 1,963
Passing: 3,313
Total: 5,276

That is less than 100 yards difference in total yards over those 3 years. The mediocrity of the offense was remarkably consistent!

Thoughts?

Maybe its just me, but I find it weird that it was so remarkably consistent (not that it was bad).

In all those years Kelly has yet to take the reigns off due inexpierence or inability. Until he has the confidence in his QBs I think the numbers will stay around where they have been.

I agree, and that's why this year's offense is going to be insane. The key is that they need to keep getting QB's that are a fit in the Kelly offense. Rees was kind of like a seemingly neverending troll to ND nation. Not that I hated him or anything and he kept the ship from sinking, but it seemed like every time something good was about to happen, something bad happens and what's the result? Rees is starting at QB.

If it doesn't get remarkably better this year the team is in trouble and so is the head coach. That said, I don't see how there isn't marked improvement with the talent they have.

No excuses for this in 2014. Too much depth at every position on offense to not be elite.

I don't think depth is tied to offensive mediocrity. You can have all the depth in the world, but if you don't have players with potential and the ability to play up to it, you'll still suck.

They were in the top half of DI-A teams, in two of those years('11 & '12). So, even though you might think it was mediocre, it was still better than average when compared to their peers.

I agree.
The only thing mediocre or below average was in the red zone. This team with a qb that is a threat to run will be far better inside the 20.

I don't understand how the figures given in the original post show mediocrity. If those numbers show anything, it is probably consistency. Even then, just showing yardage numbers alone is also not really very telling.

You may think the offense has been mediocre, and maybe it has been, but you would have to use different numbers to demonstrate that. Mediocrity should be measured against what other teams have done. Just showing the offense has put up similar amounts of yards in three straight years may be slightly interesting but it isn't suggestive of anything as it relates to other teams.

To me, IMO, pretty simple. We're just a little bit better than the average. Average = average. We need to be well above average.

My main point was the similarity over three years. It seems rather remarkable to have such little variation over 3 years.

No need to be a dick about it (oops, I guess you or a mod edited that part out).

Anyway, I don't see how we were supposed to know that was your main point, considering your title is about how remarkably mediocre the offense has been, and your OP states that as well. Seems obvious to me that your main point is that our offense has been mediocre (not really a bad argument IMO).

I think that point is valid, I just don't understand how the title of this thread is related to it. But yeah, I agree it is pretty interesting that the totals are so similar.

I would have been leaning more towards, "It's Amazing in How Much our Offense Looks Nothing Like Paris."

There are only two poor things about our offense in the past four years: special teams and red zone.
Special teams is all about depth and one special player. We have had neither up to this point.
I guess red zone is about the QB mostly.

This! We really didn't have our "fair share" of lopsided wins that last three years. With our schedule this year it might be hard to be more dominant than we have in the last three years. But I'm with everyone else, now that Rees is gone we should have more sustained drives this year.

IMO, our play calling in the red zone has been pretty awful.

Honestly I'm more excited to see an interesting offensive style. Even our wins seemed to lack panache and excitement for the most part.

I agree. But in Kelly's defense. If the QB CAN't throw a fade or muscle it into a tight opening or threaten a QB draw or run; and our only power back doesn't wake up until the last game, his play calling is somewhat limited.
