When he was being recruited by Notre Dame, Drue Tranquill wasn’t sure if he’d end up at safety or linebacker. After talking with his recruiter, Mike Elston, and Notre Dame outside linebackers coach Bob Elliott, the 2014 Indiana signee could end up anywhere still, but he knows where he’ll begin.
“They were talking about my spot and the needs they have,” Tranquill said. “It’s not that deep at linebacker. They were telling me, ‘Hey, we don’t have a third-down linebacker, we need you to learn the defense as fast as you can so you can come in and potentially help us at that Sam position.’”
Tranquill is excited to have an idea of what to expect in terms of position.
“It kind of narrows that focus down and allows me to focus my mind with tunnel vision,” he said. “Obviously, I’m go in with an open mind, whatever Coach needs me to play. But it is a little comforting to know what position you could potentially be playing.”
Playing linebacker would put Tranquill in the same position group as fellow Fort Wayne native and good friend Jaylon Smith.
“I’ve taken advantage of the couple weeks Jaylon was back here training at (Athletes With Purpose),” Tranquill said. “I caught up with him. I’ve been trying to learn that stuff so I can hopefully come in and help the team as fast as I can.”
Tranquill is grateful to have a friend and teammate like Smith to help him with the learning curve.
“He’s been extremely helpful,” Tranquill said of Smith. “When you get a guy like that, who is just embracing his role as one of the defensive leaders this year. The guy knows the defense probably as well as anyone on the team right now, so when you get a guy like that who is committed to learning and committed to excellence and you have him as a friend, it’s been a huge benefit for me going through this process.”
It should also help Tranquill achieve his personal goals for his freshman season.
“Obviously I want to make the two-deep,” he said. “I want to help the team as much as I can. If I can get a starting role, obviously that’ll be great, but I just want to help the team compete for a national championship. I think that’s everyone’s goal on the team. That’s the expectation at Notre Dame. We don’t want anything short of a national championship.”
While running track for Carroll High School this spring to help with conditioning and speed, Tranquill also started Notre Dame strength and conditioning coach Paul Longo’s workout to get stronger and add weight.
Tranquill is excited about moving on to college while making the most of his final moments at home with friends and family.
“I’m just taking my time and enjoying these last couple weeks before we get down to business,” he said.
“You’re starting a whole new chapter of your life and leaving behind something you’ve done for the last 18 years, but it’s exciting to turn the new chapter and doing something you’ve never done before. Obviously, to be a part of the Notre Dame tradition, it’s extremely exciting to play for all of those fans, all of those coaches and the players around you.”
Tranquill also has the luxury of knowing his family and friends won’t be too far away.
“They’re going to be there supporting all of the way, so I’m not so worried about that,” he said. “Obviously it’s great to be in your backyard and to be able to play for your homestate.”
