When he was being recruited by Notre Dame, Drue Tranquill wasn’t sure if he’d end up at safety or linebacker. After talking with his recruiter, Mike Elston, and Notre Dame outside linebackers coach Bob Elliott, the 2014 Indiana signee could end up anywhere still, but he knows where he’ll begin.
“They were talking about my spot and the needs they have,” Tranquill said. “It’s not that deep at linebacker. They were telling me, ‘Hey, we don’t have a third-down linebacker, we need you to learn the defense as fast as you can so you can come in and potentially help us at that Sam position.’”
Tranquill is excited to have an idea of what to expect in terms of position.
“It kind of narrows that focus down and allows me to focus my mind with tunnel vision,” he said. “Obviously, I’m go in with an open mind, whatever Coach needs me to play. But it is a little comforting to know what position you could potentially be playing.”
Playing linebacker would put Tranquill in the same position group as fellow Fort Wayne native and good friend Jaylon Smith.
“I’ve taken advantage of the couple weeks Jaylon was back here training at (Athletes With Purpose),” Tranquill said. “I caught up with him. I’ve been trying to learn that stuff so I can hopefully come in and help the team as fast as I can.”
Tranquill is grateful to have a friend and teammate like Smith to help him with the learning curve.
“He’s been extremely helpful,” Tranquill said of Smith. “When you get a guy like that, who is just embracing his role as one of the defensive leaders this year. The guy knows the defense probably as well as anyone on the team right now, so when you get a guy like that who is committed to learning and committed to excellence and you have him as a friend, it’s been a huge benefit for me going through this process.”
It should also help Tranquill achieve his personal goals for his freshman season.
“Obviously I want to make the two-deep,” he said. “I want to help the team as much as I can. If I can get a starting role, obviously that’ll be great, but I just want to help the team compete for a national championship. I think that’s everyone’s goal on the team. That’s the expectation at Notre Dame. We don’t want anything short of a national championship.”
While running track for Carroll High School this spring to help with conditioning and speed, Tranquill also started Notre Dame strength and conditioning coach Paul Longo’s workout to get stronger and add weight.
Tranquill is excited about moving on to college while making the most of his final moments at home with friends and family.
“I’m just taking my time and enjoying these last couple weeks before we get down to business,” he said.
“You’re starting a whole new chapter of your life and leaving behind something you’ve done for the last 18 years, but it’s exciting to turn the new chapter and doing something you’ve never done before. Obviously, to be a part of the Notre Dame tradition, it’s extremely exciting to play for all of those fans, all of those coaches and the players around you.”
Tranquill also has the luxury of knowing his family and friends won’t be too far away.
“They’re going to be there supporting all of the way, so I’m not so worried about that,” he said. “Obviously it’s great to be in your backyard and to be able to play for your homestate.”

Some kids are very easy to cheer for and ND has a lot of them. He seems insanely grounded and motivated with a nice skillset for the type of player BVG could really use.

The squad has expanded by 1. Redfield, Bryant, Jaylon and now Tranquill.

They are going to destroy people this year.

Good call on wolfpack. That's where I got the 'expanded by 1'.

YJ, you totally are, lol.

What do you think about Yoon? I'd hate to leave the Asians out!

Minimum requirements to get in the squad is to have a 6 pack, or be able to throw or kick it over the mountains. I think he's got a chance.

Enjoy it while it lasts...just wait till Longo spends serious time with him, he'll be off your bod squad before you know it.

Don't you mean Wolfpack.

The Irish had a wolfpack of sorts, no doubt. They were fearsome warriors. Known as the Fianna. These bands were feared by their contemporaries, and emulated by followers from their existence pre-St. Patrick, to this very day. They were undefeatable and unrelenting.

They had three mottoes:
Glaine ár gcroí (Purity of our hearts)
Neart ár ngéag (Strength of our limbs)
Beart de réir ár mbriathar (Action to match our speech)

Nice numbers on the bench press. I knew he was a "gym rat", and can't wait to see how much more quick he is than fast. I think that Drue is an effort guy, and will be a quick study that sees early playing time.

Expanded role seen for Tranquill | The Journal Gazette

Chris Goff | The Journal Gazette
9/1/14

Notre Dame freshman Drue Tranquill played a larger-than-expected role in Saturday’s 48-17 win over Rice because of absences in the secondary.

The Carroll graduate also filled spots on coordinator Scott Booker’s special teams units.

Irish coach Brian Kelly said he and his staff would continue to prepare Tranquill, who stands 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, to do more.

“He’s a physically strong and conditioned athlete,” Kelly said. “He’s physically beyond his years condition-wise. He’s such a highly conditioned athlete and physically strong enough that he can compete.”

In the season opener, Tranquill was credited with one solo tackle and two assisted tackles, in his college debut. He played on passing downs in nickel and dime packages and also saw snaps at safety with starter Austin Collinsworth hurt.

“His is just a learning curve of the game and the speed of the game,” Kelly said of Tranquill. “He’ll continue to play more and more football. He’s a very good tackler. Solid tackler, and he carries himself not like a freshman.”

His ND Bio has:

Height / Weight:
6-1½ / 225

Yup, the writer of this article must have pulled his height and weight from the recruiting websites that showed his vitals from prior to him putting on weight during and after his senior season.

The solo tackle was a great play. 3rd and 11. He was lined up on the right side of the formation. The QB scrambled up the middle and looked like a good shot at a first down. He reacted quickly and covered a lot of ground in a short time for the sure tackle.
