If you read ISD months ago they said as much about Lovette. That he was very high on ND but that they didn't see it being a match because of how ND's class was filling up.

As weird as this sounds, Adams basically took Lovette's spot. Which is why it's kinda debatable how things are shaking out but I've got faith for now that they know what they're doing.

IMO Adams over Lovette is a mistake. Regardless, recruit them both and get Lovette up for an OV. Anything can happen, especially when a guy sports PSU gear at your ND camp.

If he wants in, we better take him. We never, ever have 85 scholarship players. Take him, and let the roster sort itself out. Give Adams a crack at RB first, if it doesn't work out, let him flip sides of the ball. I understand you only have so much room at certain positions, but there are plenty of teams that have loaded up at skill positions like this. The only difference is that when we do it, it seems like it is in one class vs each cycle. Until we can do it consistently on a year to year basis, I would suggest we not turn away this kind of talent.

this guy is an offensive weapon you take his commitment regardless imo due to his versatility.

Hallelujah! The staff is finally taking IE's advise and stopped recruiting California.

I hope this isn't true as I have felt that this kid was really into ND; but it is what it is.

Just my opinion, but I would rather overstock the OL and defensive front 7 before slot WRs.

Agreed. With the number of spots left in this class, the guys already onboard, and the guys the staff are still after, I just don't see where Lovette or Humphrey fit. I think they'd open the risk of decommits if they try to stock the cupboards too full at WR this class.

Soso, ESB, and fill the rest of the schollies with on defense.

Since there is such a concern with schollies, am I to assume that you guys think we will fill an 85 man roster for first time since ... well... ever?

I'll 3rd this opinion. If you can't protect the QB or attack the QB, you're done.

Yeah, it's a bit of weird game. Clearly, Adams and Lovette are completely different prospects so it's almost silly to consider that one would take the spot of another.

The thing with Lovette is that... per people at ISD... he's down the board in general. This is from awhile ago talking about slot prospects and such. What is cool about him is that he's kind of an APB type dude and a lot of people were recruiting him as a RB. We NEED RBs. Must get 2 prospects that can play the position in this class. That's where you have the intersection between him and Adams.

If Adams flames out as a RB he play a myriad of LB positions. Lovette can't... he has different versatility. So which is more desirable?

You can just as easily ask why take Guyton, Fertitta, etc. Why take Coleman/White over Reid? It's all just staff preference. From what transpired with Newsome they apparently feel pretty darn good about their situation right now at that position... because they were VERY high on him.

At the same time, I think it's really fair to question some recruiting that has transpired. The way the regions and such are set now is weird. The way we recruited Barnett after he committed was full of flaws, IMO.

I do think they'll fill an 85 man roster as of February 4. But as of September 5 versus Texas? Well....

Do you think this is due to being burned in the past waiting on higher rated players?

I'll tell ya what... If we have 85 guys on NSD, I'll give you $1M vbucks.

That's not a bet, btw.. I'll just give it to you.

I would be ecstatic to lose those vbucks.

Can you expand on that?

We'll have it on NSD with the 5th years included. We won't have it by fall camp, per usual. I 100% agree that with how we do things we'll never, ever enter a season at 85 guys barring a miracle/scholarship award to a walk-on.

Not Barnett's thread so I'll make it brief... I personally don't feel we did a strong enough job continuing to recruit him after he pledged. On one hand, I understand this because QBs very rarely flip.

But he had little to no contact/relationship with Denbrock or LaFleur. Bob Elliot was the guy he talked to the most, which doesn't make sense to me. Kelly also (obviously) wasn't putting in a lot of time courting him. I think this let a lot of the negative recruiting to really take hold.

Compare/contrast that to Oregon and Alabama which... regardless of public comments about being "respectful"... largely threw full court press style contact at him with their HC/OC/QB coach. Lane Kiffin was all over his junk. I think we could've done more and if we had we would've had a better chance of keeping him in the fold. As much as I'm anti-Hopkins that was only a very small piece of the overall pie... a lot of the other factors that swayed Blake probably could've been assuaged by a more proactive approach and getting him to make a summer visit before he looked elsewhere.

I really can't remember the last time we even had it on NSD (unless you're counting every possible 5th year)

USC 247 poster claiming a very good source told him that Lovette to ND is about a done deal.

I can't believe someone actually said that (I mean, I believe that you saw that; I just can't believe a USC insider thought that). Here is what I wrote in early June I believe:

No longer even talking to USC and it looks like he will not be going there.

Most schools see him as a RB but he still wants to play slot. UCLA has higher RBs on their board so they are not recruiting him hard right now.

Cal is the clear front runner right now. Texas A&M and ND are also threats.

I got most of that info from Chris Hawkins' dad, who coaches Malik in the off-season and who knows his parents well. Malik's parents aren't listening to his advice though (and as pro-USC as he obviously is, Hawkins' dad is also very high on ND), and so Cal (as of last month) was easily their school of choice.

I have no idea if his offer is actionable or not, but this was/is always going to be a very difficult pull for ND.

The second one that said he doesn't have an actionable offer is Hawkins' dad posting on 247 I believe.
