My first reaction was now there is no way Russia can support this movement. Then I later wondered how they got these surface to air missiles

ISIS is sitting on lots of American-made weaponry right now, and the Russians have been selling their hardware to anyone with legal tender for decades. I wouldn't read too much into origin of the SAM.

In his view, they were all willing participants in the "war" because they'd been warned. I haven't seen these quotes confirmed by any English sources though. He has been an extreme hardliner in the news this week though.

CNN just quoted him on the same, but it's clear there's a ton of confusion right now since the official separatist statement is they didn't do it.

is it the "Russian speaking folks in Ukraine who want to be part of Russia" who did this...or is it the Ukranians?

or are we not sure at this point?

Pretty much everyone is pointing at the separatists or directly at Russia currently, but I don't think anyone knows for sure.

The Buk is a major, sophisticated SAM system involving multiple vehicles. This isn't some shoulder mounted system.

It likely can't be fired without a trained crew.

I really underestimated the violence of this civil war. This is some brazen shit, and now the separatists aren't allowing anyone from Kiev or the Kiev-backed local government near the crash site.

ding ding ding. Destablization is the key here. I am surprised that they shot at a commercial airliner. Maybe they thought it was Ukrainian?

They've shot down at least 2 Ukranian military planes already, and they were talking about how the 777 could be mistaken as a cargo plane by undertrained troops.

That's what I can't figure out. This was a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Who's the target?

^^
This

Or they shot it down on purpose, with the intention to blame it on the Ukrainian Military.

If the separatists group did do this, how the hell did they get ahold of the Buk missile technology? Where is the black market for these types of things?

Russia has been passing weapons to the separatists pretty openly, and there was a deleted tweet by one of their leaders that they had acquired one of these systems within the last 2 weeks.

I'm leaning towards it was mistaken as a cargo plane. NOBODY, even the rebels, wants to shoot down an international civilian flight.

Just reading up on Strelkov. Wow, what an incredible asshole. Where does his sense of entitlement and self-righteousness come from? Someone should up a bullet between his eyes.

Actually, I remember a Korean comercial airliner was shot down on purpose in the Far East by Russia in 1983.

I'll acknowledge that I don't know anything about anything, but it seems to me that a rocket hitting a plane would cause it to do most of its exploding in the air, not when it hits the ground. That plane looks like it blew up on impact. I picture a rocket hitting a plane causing a fireball in the air and then raining charred shrapnel.

Thoughts?

They were saying on CNN that there are two types of missles. One would cause it to completely explode in the air as you mentioned. The other basically explodes and hits the entire plane with shrapnel, causing it to crash but not explode midair.

Its not the black market. Its Russian forces secretly handing over these weapon systems or letting them "fall" into the separatists' hands.

That sounds like the shittier kind of missile. What kind of low-budget production is this?

That's kind of a self righteous, asshole thing to say. Just saying.
