I know a lot of people like Ross better, I don't necessarily have a preference either, but we would maybe have one of the best defensive backfields on paper that has ever roamed the field for us if we could just get one more stud DB.

That's because he's been to both a bunch he does live in California. I Still think he goes to SC.

I WANT ROSS!!!! Sincerely one of my top 5-10 overall wants in this class. I think his ceiling is insanely high at CB. I know he needs work but I think Cooks could make this kid one of the best CB's in the country.

I know, I said that in the past and it got deleted and I am pretty sure I got a neg rep

I could see that being a factor to some degree. I still think the kid is a player though. I think he will surprise some folks and make us all glad we got him.

Right, because this will be the year we reach our scholarship limit...

Seriously. Some people still can't grasp how he isn't taking anyone's spot, and him be signed up is irrelevant to both positional recruiting and overall numbers.

I don't see why people are so down on Nicco. The guy can flat out ball. Sure his measurables aren't great, but he has 2 things that make a very good safety. 1) Quick reaction time. 2) Sure tackling.

He makes up for his lack of elite speed by quickly process where the ball is going and getting in the right position to make the play. Once he gets there, he is able to take the carrier down without the fear of missing. He is also a hard hitter with good tackling mechanics. He seems to know when to home in and drill somebody in order to try to jar the ball loose, and when to go for the legs and just bring him down.

I don't think his commitment will change anything regarding Ross or Reid. Kelly plans on loading up on DB's this year anyway, and I'd imagine those two are takes no matter what.

Agreed, don't understand why we took a prospect to play special teams

Not every player we take will turn into a starter. It's a number's game. If we're taking 20 kids a class on average, on a team with 80+ players, there are only 22 players that will garner the game action as a starter. Sure, some positions rotate players throughout the game, but even then, still quite a bit of scholarship players won't be playing

Fertitta may or may not develop into a starter... However, he will have a role on this team and will be expected to represent this university with a manner of excellence; whatever that may be. If he only plays special teams for four (or five) years, then we got a player who busted his ass on special teams. Perhaps he blocks a few punts or is a great gunner and can get down field quickly and make a sure tackle. Whatever the case, he will be helping this football team.

Now, personally, I don't know what kind of player Nicco will be. But, I'll tell you this, we've had players on this team who either were low ranked three stars and even walk-ons who have helped this team immensely. Common example, Joe Schmidt. He didn't do much in his first two seasons [one year of preserving eligibility, one more exclusively on special teams], but look at last season, he played some meaningful minutes in some pretty good games and probably made the game saving pass breakup against USC

Other examples, Matthias Farley. He was more lower ranked than two other DBs in his class, Jalen Brown and Josh Atkinson, but he too, has seen a lot of action for this team playing in many big games. And I know he's 2013 season was pretty abysmal in terms of tackling, but look at 2012, Jamoris Slaughter goes down Week 3 against Michigan State, and is lost for the season. "Redshirt" freshman converted wide-receiver Matthias Farley steps in a plays some decent football.

Point I'm making is don't underestimate some of these players. Nicco may turn into THEE SHIT and become a great safety and future NFL draft pick or he may just be shit... Whatever he becomes, he'll have a role on this team.

The star system is basically a projection, and just as most things in sports these projections can be wrong. Obviously they mean something when a player is rated highly by all services, but what about the kids that are rated high on one service and low on another?

These kids are projected by multiple individuals at different levels of ability. Coach Kelly and his staff I believe have done a decent job of projecting talent to this point, and should be given credit where it is due. Bennett Jackson may not have been a great college football player, but he turned out better than projected. Nick Martin will be another that will probably have a tremendous career and move on to being drafted somewhere in the middle rounds. Robinson is another guy that wasn't rated very high, and seems to have a nice career ahead of himself.

I believe this staff is good at projecting talent, and knowing how they fit in on the roster, and that counts for more than star power to me.

*But after that long winded rant, I would still take a 5* talent any day of the week.

This is where BK and staff are in my opinion exceptional. To consistently identify talent early is vital to ND.

Of course we all want the five stars. But it's not like we're turning away better talent because we took some three star that we think has upside. We have scholarships to give every year.

BVG is going to make these kids stars. I pity Michigan's fans in a few months.

Thanks, Lax, I'm not usually one to bitch, but Ross would be a huge pick up for us, and Nico has his own thread to discuss his 3* status......

3 stars happens sure. You know what else happens usually, 5 star guys that help you reach a National Championship and playoffs. But so do 3 stars, and 4 stars and walkons. People have this argument where let's just take the 3 star and developed him at Notre Dame. Because he is an RKG, I wish we had a bunch of "Tyler Eifert's" or Nicco Ferrita's that all want to be at Notre Dame and love it as much as we do. But they don't, so we have to go down South and Cali and get those players if you want to play Championship football.

5 star vs 3 star debate just drives me nuts, sorry for venting.

So, what is going on with this kid named Ross? Heard he is a game changer? Any interest after he moved in to ND for the week?

Are you guys serious? I do all of that cleanup and you still come back and organically post OT in this thread instead of continuing the discussion in Nicco's?

Still nothing. Both BGI and II have reached out to him on a few different occasions according to Jake, Pete, and Loy. No response back as of yet. TJ has mantained that he made the visit and is basically at the top of our CB board along with a few others.

Your post is fraught with irony and woven with an iron band of sarcasm. You just drink from the fountain of funny way too often for us mere mortals.
