Cup Matches - Outright / To Qualify Football Bets
What does 'Outright' or 'To Qualify' mean?
In a 'Knockout or Cup Competition', a winner has to be decided, so that one team may go through to the next round. Betting on the selection to go through to the next round, or 'To Qualify', is called 'Outright' betting.
For example, in football, some ties are played over two legs (Matches), with each team playing both a home and an away leg. If the scores are level after both legs, or after 'normal time' in a single knockout match, 'extra-time' will be played. If the scores are still level after extra-time, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout.
How are cup matches settled?:
Unless it is stated otherwise, all football bets will be settled upon the result of the match within 90 minutes (also referred to as Full-time and normal time). This includes Injury Time, which is the additional few minutes usually added on by the referee at the end of each half. This does not include "Extra-Time". Extra-time is an additional 30 minute period (2 x 15 minutes halves) played shortly after 90-minutes is up, to decide the result of a tied fixture when a winner is required.
When an event can go to "Extra-time", only in 'knockout competitions', and the team going through has to be decided on the night, an additional match betting market usually called "To Qualify" is created. The main difference is that there is no "Draw" option. "To Qualify" markets state each selection's chances of 'qualifying' for the next round, which is simply win or lose by whichever means, including the possibilities of the match going to extra-time and/or penalties where applicable. Other markets that may include "Extra-Time" will specifically state this in the market heading. All others are for Normal Time only.
If you bet on a team to win in the standard Match Betting market, and the match finshes 1-1 in Normal Time, and then is decided in Extra-Time or on penalties, then your bet would be a loser. If you are placing a bet over the phone for a team to go through to the next round, please ensure that you mention "To Qualify" or "Outright", otherwise your bet will be settled on the result in Normal Time only.
Example
An example of the settlement of a match involving extra time would be the 2005 Champions League final:
It was 3-3 when the referree blew the whistle for Full Time - for betting purposes the match is settled as a draw as extra-time does not count. Liverpool went on to win on a penalty shootout but if you had backed them to win in the win-draw-win market your bet would have been a loser, your friend who backed the draw would be collecting his winnings. To win on Liverpool you would have needed to back them in the 'To lift the trophy' market. The equivalent to this is an earlier round of a cup competition would be called 'To qualify' (for the next round).
Good Betting and Good Luck!
