Deleted comment as it was in bad taste concerning the seriousness of the incident.

I got to disagree to an extent. Legally yes he is an adult and is responsible for his actions. That being said I do not know many under-22 adults that have the game of life figured out. I know plenty that have made many mistakes (myself included). and if this is his first offense then I hope he gets a second chance. Hell my life between the ages of 17-28 is filled with stupid shit I did not get caught doing or was given a reprieve when I did.

People need to chill out with the judgments.

I hope I'm wrong but I personally do not think he will be back, but he will be able to continue his football career elsewhere. Whether it be a MAC school or a Big Ten school, he will play football again. I hope he turns out to be a fantastic player.

A situation where the player did far more damage to himself than he did to the program by pulling this stunt. I've never been booked on a felony, but I've definitely done my share dumb shit, so I do feel for him. ND football will be fine; I hope the same is true for Will.

I grew up 15 min from Y'town. It's a rough place, and I'm sure we aren't hearing half of what has happened. He could always end up at Youngstown St.

We have no idea what happened so I will not speculate on what he did.

I think we can all attest to doing some dumb shit and I know many men older than him who still act like they are 18 years old. But no matter how drunk I was, I still knew what lines not to cross. I did some things to get pretty damn close to that line (which are things I would not do today), but I still had that awareness to know when not to do something.

Agreed. I understand where everybody is coming from as all of us hold this school and it's representatives to a higher standard, but college KIDS make mistakes. You aren't an adult mentally at 22 in school. You are still learning an awful lot at that stage in your life. When I was 22 I was stationed in Japan with all kinds of crazy responsibilities to take care of. Still made mistakes, maybe not as severe as what Will is going through right now, but still juvenile in nature. It sucks that this happened, but where he goes from here will show what kind of man Will intends to be. I wish him the best of luck and I hope that some of the posters on here who have never made a mistake before continue that run of excellence.

wait, so he couldn't out run the cops either. Longo's fault.

In all seriousness, I'm not so much worried about a black eye on the program or the media getting this as some have said. How he comes out the other side of this matters more to me. I don't see our players as just another player, they are part of the ND family. Will, I don't know the full situation, but I wish you well on the other side of it. I hope you get everything straightened out and are successful in your future in whatever you decide to do.

My hopes and prayers go out for Will.

People have brought up the Rees and Calabrese incident. One big difference. That took place in Indiana, this in Ohio. If reports are accurate, he has been charged with a fifth, third, and first degree felony. He has two misdemeanors thrown in. A first degree felony is pretty serious. Maybe someone who is a member of the Ohio Bar could chime in. I believe a first degree would be pretty tough to deal on, unless the incident was grossly overcharged.

This may be a situation where Coach Kelly and ND have nothing to do with what happens in this case.

Awesomely well said.

And as far as mistakes, I stopped getting in bar fights because I broke my left hand in two places. Not for the right reasons. It cramped my party life. My mind at 20 something.

You know, when player from another school get in trouble, my main beef is with the coaches. It is about whether there is a propensity of serious issues with a player, or a cluster of issues (Urban Meyer, I'm looking at you.) I feel bad for these kids. By in large they are screwed from the start. Only have people interested in them for what they can do, not who they become. I don't believe it is that way at ND, but it doesn't mean that ND kids don't make mistakes. That part I am sympathetic with. The only kind of player I don't have sympathy for is an Aaron Hernandez type, which is an admittedly pretty extreme example.

So my wishes for the best for all of these kids with an incident like this to overcome, and that even includes those that father babies in these years.

You're right Will is old enough to take the blame for this.

Yep. "Good kids" don't get in bar fights and assault cops.

Good people do bad things too (in this case REALLY bad things)...especially when alcohol is involved.

I don't believe in throwing young adults away, because of dumb mistakes that they make, but..........

Why is it that kids of 18-22 can be responsible enough to command tanks, infantry squads, and a whole host of other incredibly lethal implements of war, and have relatively few issues, while our college athletes cannot seem to boil an egg without doing something incredibly stupid?

I would submit that it is all about expectations. We place high expectations on our military members, and they are (mostly) held to those expectations! So let's try holding our college athletes to some higher expectations, and see what happens?

In his defense, many cops charge you with assaulting an officer for any contact whatsoever. (There's even a practice of resting their flashlight on your shoulder, just so they can charge with with "assault" when you push it away.)

So while he may very well have "headbutted" an officer, you can't be sure just from the charges. (Or maybe even the police report...)

Let's go out and get hammered and fight instead of focusing on getting back to ND and competing for a starting job. Sad.

I promise you it is a lot more than you think when it comes to those same 18-22 year old kids that are in the military that are having issues. The difference is that they get the training necessary to perform those actions. I am not condoning Will's actions by any means, and he most certainly needs to be held accountable for his actions. All I am saying is that he is still a kid. I was in the military and from 18-22 had a lot of growing up to do. I will say I did a damn good job, but outside of work I was still searching for my place in the world and I promise you there are many others going through the same things.

I served as well, and we both know that the constant threat of NJP, and all of the other fun little ways the military has of making your life a living hell, kept us from doing even MORE and DUMBER stuff than what we already did. I never meant to insinuate that all of the 18-22 year old kids in the military were squeaky clean. But, it sure seems that, per capita, you hear about a LOT more athletes running into trouble with the law. What I am saying is this........ the kid is facing 3 felonies. That's pretty serious stuff. Granted, not all felonies are created equal, but if you are a "hometown hero", big time football player, and you get three felonies tossed at you, AFTER the entire chain of command in the justice system has had a chance to look at the incident? Then you are worthy of it. So how about this; we all know that ND treats scholarships as a four year thing. So why not suspend the kid from football for the year, but keep him in school and on scholarship? I think that would send a clear message, to high school kids all over the country; one "oh shit" can wipe out your football career, but we are not going to just throw you away over it. We'll give you a path to a back up plan. So, if football is really that important to you? Stay out of trouble with the law.

Now this is something I can get behind. Really I agree with your initial post too, I just think it is difficult to say that at that age where you get your first opportunities to make adult decisions that you can be considered grown. Life isn't always easy and sometimes we have to learn the hard way. It is how you respond that dictates the outcome though. Great post bro.

My opinion on the Kid vs Adult side of the discussion.

There is a lot that happens in their youth before they reach the magic 18 that leads to their ability to make proper decisions when they are in trouble, as well as decisions that lead them to the bad actions. Also, they make very little of their own decisions when being a cfb player at a big university. So much is dictated for them. These mistakes some are making often are the first 'real life' situation/decision they are faced with.

Zillowed the area of the arrest. When 1600 SF houses sell for $80,000 that usually does not indicate a very nice neighborhood. Couple blocks to the north you have places selling for $20K.

Alcohol has been mentioned frequently, is there any sense that maybe some drugs were involved? Doesn't take much effort for some derelict friends to drop something in your drink.

I've never bought the whole drunk excuse for violence. I think it is more finding an excuse to do what you want to do. That is why I ask about other drug possibilities. I have a hard time seeing how people can be so stupid to resist arrest and fight a police officer.

Exactly. I've been "drunk" more than a few times over the yrs at clubs/bars and first thing on my mind is getting numbers. Hope he gets his stuff together and good luck to him.
