Schools that over-report useless secondary violations do so in order to have a plausible "but we were trying the hardest we could! I swear!" defense if/when they do get busted for something big.

Maybe the best example is Ohio State, who had Pryor driving around in how many cars? And the whole tat-gate thing with Tressel lying and covering things up. Yet they routinely report dozens of secondary violations and have a huge compliance department to give the illusion of being "strict."

USC is probably the most famous example of how NOT to handle things. Had a one person compliance department, didn't self-report anything, etc. and they got absolutely hammered over Reggie Bush. That's what all these schools are trying to avoid by reporting pasta violations and other nonsense. So that if/when they get busted for Player X taking Impermissible Benefit Y they have a real case to make with evidence that they did everything in their power to foster an environment of compliance and vigilantly monitor their athletes.

This is the kind of thing that's going to lead to Student/Athletes getting paid.

It's a crying shame that the NCAA is so pathetic that it can't separate the letter of the law from the spirit in which it's intended.

This is only ammo for people that want to pay these kids a salary.

Dare I say it? Oh, what the hell: "weak sauce."

For those who didn't take time to read the article, the NCAA found no violation. It was a self-reporting, bullshit ruse by OU.

Agree...........The NCAA came out and said there was no rules violation and there is no rule governing the amount of pasta. However, on Mike & Mike this morning they did mention that there is actually an NCAA rule in place that tells you what is allowed and what isn't allowed to be offered with a bagel! Rich school = Lox, average school = peanut butter?

This was NOT an NCAA violation. I'm all for NCAA-bashing but people are jumping to conclusions based on a thread title. This was obviously an internal thing and based on the players' tweets, seems like it was a good-natured ribbing from the coaches.

NCAA said:
While we appreciate Oklahoma's commitment, there are no NCAA rules regarding portion sizes, and any penalties were determined by the university," NCAA spokeswoman Meghan Durham said in a statement.
