really bummed about O'Toole's passing man. Do you think anyone in history had a good a life as him and Richard Harris? I think not.

I'm pretty sure not.

"Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

Beatitudes and other less apocryphal quotes from the same non-capitalist source:

Q 6:20-21 The Beatitudes for the Poor, Hungry, and Mourning
20 <…> And •rais‚ing his •eyes to‚ his disciples he said: Blessed are •«you»‚ poor, for God's reign is for •you‚. 21 Blessed are •«you»‚ who hunger, for •you‚ will eat •your‚ fill. Blessed are •«you»‚ who •mourn‚, for •<you> will be consoled‚.

Q 6:22-23 The Beatitude for the Persecuted
22 Blessed are you when they insult and •persecute‚ you, and •say every kind of‚ evil •against‚ you because of the son of humanity. 23 Be glad and •exult‚, for vast is your reward in heaven. For this is how they •persecuted‚ the prophets who «were» before you.

Q 6: 27-28, 35c-d Love Your Enemies
27 Love your enemies 28 •and‚ pray for those •persecuting‚ you, 35c-d so that you may become sons of your Father, for he raises his sun on bad and •good and rains on the just and unjust‚.

Q 6:29-30 Renouncing One's Own Rights
29 •The one who slaps‚ you on the cheek, offer •him‚ the other as well; and •to the person wanting to take you to court and get‚ your shirt, •turn over to him‚ the coat as well. •29?30/Matt 5:41‚ •«And the one who conscripts you for one mile, go with him a second.»‚ 30 To the one who asks of you, give; and •from the one who borrows, do not •ask‚ back •«what is»‚ yours.

Q 6:31 The Golden Rule
31 And the way you want people to treat you, that is how you treat them.

Q 6:32, 34 Impartial Love
32 .. If you love those loving you, what reward do you have? Do not even tax collectors do the same? 34 And if you •lend «to those» from whom you hope to receive, what <reward do> you < have>?‚??? Do not even •the Gentiles‚ do the same?

Q 6:36 Being Full of Pity like Your Father
36 Be full of pity, just as your Father .. is full of pity.

Q 6:37-38 Not Judging
37 .. Do not pass judgment, «so» you are not judged. •For with what judgment you pass judgment, you will be judged.‚ 38 •And‚ with the measurement you use to measure out, it will be measured out to you.

You want to play that game?

"For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish'?"
-Not a socialist

"But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
-Not a socialist

"In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has."
-Not a socialist

"The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty."
-Not a socialist

"For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat."

I'll add that none of the quotes involving charity mentions a massive, welfare state that crushes personal incentive and makes people beholden to the Caesar, essentially breeding a system of reliance on the state in perpetuity. Christ never once said that a massive, central planned economy or a 50% tax rate was the key to salvation.

Yup.

Helping poor through exercise of free will = virtue

Helping poor because the government siezes your money to dispense as they see fit = no virtue

Another misinterpreted Bible quote. The pastor of my parish explained that the meaning of this has to do with the belief of the time that the wealthy were blessed and favored by God. The point is that even this favored class (the rich) will have a very hard time living a life that is worthy of them being admitted into Heaven. But then it got turned around to "being rich=being an immoral, hell-bound bastard."

He almost went far enough. Read it a wealthy man cannot command his way it. God must pick.

Well, my stomach and licorice don't really play well together, but I do consider myself a bit of a Dead Head.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

I'm no military expert, and these figures might not be exactly right,' I said. 'But as best I can tell, we've launched 114 Tomahawk cruise missiles into Afghanistan so far. Now take the cost of one of those missiles, tipped with a Raytheon guidance system, which I think is about $840,000. For that much money, you could build dozens of schools that could provide tens of thousands of students with a balanced, non extremist education over the course of a generation. Which do you think will make us more secure?”

+1. That's what I tell people who want to attribute these grand conspiracies to governments or large private organizations. There likely isn't a grand, nefarious scheme; they're probably just dumb screw-ups.

― Greg Mortenson,

What about the electrical engineer who received a co-op scholarship at Purdue from Raytheon to learn how to build a better Tomahawk cruise missle and thereby support his family?

What about him/her?

Raytheon also developed the micro-wave oven. A much less destructive "gismo."

Fair point, mine was just that the defense industry is not a "taker" only industry as Ike's quote implies. Those are real people that work in it that need to eat too.

EDIT: I feel weird criticizing Ike. I like Ike.

RE-EDIT: Sorry for non thread topic posts.

I don't know about that. I've had a few Hot Pockets destroyed because I left them in the microwave for too long.

P.S. Isn't it "gizmo" not "gismo?" Please tell me our resident human spell-checker is not on the fritz.
