really can't figure out why we haven't heard anything on griffin receiving an offer yet.

i'm afraid we got into the game too late with the rest of the guys we have on board.

not mad at Dickerson for making his own decision, but man he really didn't give us a lot of time to deal with

I think Griffin will get an offer once he gets on campus and the staff can eyeball him. As long as he isn't built like Tyler Stockton, I think the offer should come pretty quick into his visit.

Very possible. That would be my guess. He has been on campus for a couple days now, and the staff did all meet to discuss recruiting when they got back together. The offers are most likely the fruition of that discussion.
I hope so, looks like he doesn't mind a shorter DT. Until now every DT offer except for Smallwood was 6'3 and taller, all of the new offers are under 6'3. Might just be coincidence or that's all that still available but I like the attention to our need, just wish these guys were contacted sooner.

Probably signals that with BVG will will have our DTs shoot gaps and make plays in the backfield at least part of the time, rather than simply hold them 100% of the time.

Are you saying the latter has been a poor scheme the last few years? You don't shoot gaps when you have a true NG like LN3.

I agree, opening up the "specific measurable mold" also lets us consider a lot more recruits. IMO and I'm far from a coach but DT is a position where height isn't such a huge concern. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating 6ft lineman but 6'2 with a high motor will more than keep an o line busy.....hell look at how disruptive Day has been.

I'm not sure how you could infer I felt one way or another when noting a possible shift in scheme from the recruiting tendencies of one DC to the next, but no, I don't think that was a poor scheme at all. The proof was in the pudding.

LN3 could have shot gaps if he wanted to though - that is why he will be such a high pick in this years draft. He has the size and strength to be a true nose in a 3-4 and hold the point of attack, but he also has the quickness and moves to be a massive penetrating 4-3 DT.

Both schemes have their merits, and both can be very successful. All I care about is results - don't really mind too much how we get there in terms of 3-4, 4-3, holding gaps, shooting them, etc. Utilize the talent you have to get the most out of it, and recruit to what you want to do and think you can do best.

My favorite defenses are when you have balanced DL who can both rush the passer and hold their own in the run game, athletic LBs that can cover, and physical, confident DBs that excel in man to man coverage. That's just my personal preference. Diaco's D was really nothing like that, yet it was extremely successful while at ND and I loved that. Results come first for me, style points second.

I wasn't accusing, just asking.

you usually dont shoot gaps in a predominant 3-4. Its more about holding the line and gap control rather than stunts/slants/twists. IN a 3-4 it takes too long for the DE and NT to meet to run anything like that. And 'shooting the gaps' is more of a LB term for when they are blitzing or doing their run fits.

I think these offers are more about whos available + likely to put ND into real contention without much work

Just saw on the Pats game that Vince Wilfork is only 6'2... yeah I'd say that's sufficient to hold the weight of a DT.

II talked to Trey and he said he has one official remaining and that is scheduled on the 24th for LSU but ND has given him a lot to think about.

Chocolate, Jr. Period.

Looks a bit like Day's high school film too. No one can block either of the three in high school. Slices down the line to make the play on the rb's really well on play action counters, and draws.

PLEASE NOTE: Does the whole conversation in this thread about "defensive schemes" indicate a major shift in defensive philosophy???

Here is what I remember. Go to a 3-4 because it his so hard for ND to get top defensive linemen.

Go to a two gap scheme with your dlinemen, so you need more bigger and stronger guys, (one to start, one to spell.)

You don't need the freakish size and speed because you will have them shoot the gaps, you just need more of them!

Maybe we should run a 2 - 5 - 4 next year? Who needs a nose guard?

@ISDUpdate: Former #Texas DT commit Trey Lealaimatafao talks #NotreDame offer, upcoming #Oregon visit & more. (Premium) http://t.co/3NzMafUvnQ

Nothing new. Going all the way to signing day. Only is visiting Oregon this point on the 24th. Said he likes having the opportunity to get a degree from ND and come in and play right away. The environment, family, education, and graduation rate are all big factors. Also coaching stability.

Hammond would play it safe only referring to him by his first name ... and still get it wrong.
