The degree argument is different, but everyone keeps bringing up the fact that coming back to school could improve your draft position. Under the new CBA, the higher rounds aren't getting crazy money and all rookie deals are three years, so the incentive to move up isn't as strong as the incentive to get into the league earlier so you get to free agency a year earlier. The big money doesn't come from being taken at the top of the second round opposed to the middle of the fourth; the big money comes after your rookie deal is up. So staying in school would be like playing an extra year on your rookie deal for free.

If this is even remotely close to accurate (which I would say it would be given other info I have read on it before), there is significantly more value in going the top two rounds.

niklas' father, Don Niklas, had told ESPN.com that Troy had received a grade between the second- and fourth-rounds, and that Troy plans on returning for his senior season and receiving his degree.

Here is his father saying he would be back at ND yesterday. Today is a new day, I guess.

More to the point, though, it says he received a 2nd-4th grade, which makes it at least somewhat understandable to me. Gotta wonder what happened between yesterday and today. If he was even remotely on the fence yesterday, why would they have said anything?

This is a very good point. Makes sense to get in early as the money is going to be about the same.

It's not even close to the same. You're looking at a 4 year deal at ~1.5-2mil/year for a mid-to-late first round pick. This is with a big signing bonus up front.

A 4th round pick is looking at around 600k/year for 4 years with a tiny ~200k signing bonus up front.

Assume a generous 8 year career with similar production. Subtract a year for staying school. 4 years x $2mil + 3 years x $3 mil = $17 mil.
4 years x $500k + 4 years x $3 mil = $14 mil.

And that's a best case scenario where you're VERY productive and become a veteran. If you don't pan out long term like most NFL players or get injured, you are BY FAR better off coming out of the draft with more security and more up front money as a high pick than a mid-round selection.

Sucks, but we will live.

As Longo as Golson is back.

Best of luck Troy, hopefully you continue the TE U tradition.

This makes a OC hire important and all the more interesting. It will put a bit more pressure on the OL, but time will tell.

Alright what the hell is this "information".

Could easily be word from an NFL team or multiple saying that he is very high on their draft board. He is a stud, which is why we're all pissed he's going to the NFL.

I for one can see him going fairly highly because NFL scouts know he's a beast. I think it's downright dumb to say he didn't have the production in college to justify leaving. Production is crap, it's not like he whiffed during the season.

Yes, he should have stayed. He was probably my favorite player too. But that doesn't mean he won't be amazing in every sense of the word at the combine and go high.

You lose Tuitt Atkinson Niklas and maybe Daniels. I mean you lose all of them? Not keep one? Something is up

@NDatRivals: Asked what was the biggest factor that changed Troy’s decision, Don Niklas said: “Information"

Something must be up...

Didn't BK say he put in the paperwork for GAIII and Niklas on his own?

I mean this may be some serious conspiracy theory shit, but anyway he somehow sees both these moves as good for them and/or the program?

I mean all along I think we all thought he did that for those guys to give them feedback on what to improve upon, but it seems that once those guys got those back they were just straight gone, despite neither getting glowing recommendations. Just bizarre.

I get GAIII, I simply do not get this with Niklas saying the day before that he was coming back. "Information"? What is that bullshit?

Something is seriously afoot or everyone is just taking crazy pills. Nothing catches me by surprise anymore with ND. Not DaVaris, not GAIII, not Anzalone, not EV... nothing.

This is out of god damn left field. My mind is blown.

If he doesn't go by the second round, then it was the dumbest decision he could have made. His choices are likely to 1) stay, get degree, and very likely be a first/second round pick, or 2) put all your eggs on a good combine and hopefully get drafted by round 2, likely get drafted third or worse.

Time will tell, but he HAS to have a sick combine. There is nothing really else to fall back on to justify going before the third round.

Well, the common denominator in all that is Kelly. Is Kelly the problem?

Either the whole family got conned by a bad agent OR something is afoot behind the scenes OR both. What do you all think? Who has some throw-shit-against-the-wall tinfoil hat conspiracy theories?

Ebron, ASJ and Amaro are all going above him. Fiedorowicz and Lynch will be in the discussion right after that. Niklas is probably either in that group or the one right after as of now. Colt Lyeria is also a huge wild card.

So assuming no unknown small school TEs blow up the combine, which usually happens, he is look at the #4 TE spot at absolute best and probably the #7-8 at worst. Based on last years draft, that means he is probably going in the 4th round, with a chance at the 3rd.

Someone, please tell me he wouldn't blow that projection out of the water with even a decent year next year?

Just a random guess but was he going to be academically ineligible too?

At least he had the decency to tell them. Still doesn't change the fact that he's a moron and is making a very very VERY poor decision. Leave early with no degree in hand and AT BEST a 5th round selection, or stay a year, get the degree, be selected in the 1st-2nd round. Me thinks the choice SHOULD BE FUCKING OBVIOUS!!!
