Keep an eye on the Miami Dolphins. Jeff Ireland out, and there were reports of Phillbin on shaky ground... but you think they would've fired him already if they were going to.

I think he's gone.

You sure? I think he deserves it and I hope so.

As an aside, on the Bobby Petrino front he's headed back to Louisville. Crazy.

this is just crazy...a coach that used them as a stepping stone, is now needing them again to get his career back on track...it wouldn't be a long term thing, i wouldn't think....he will land in a big time gig once everything is forgotten in a few years

Is Petrino still wearing the neck brace? That'd be a good look on the sideline.

Hmmm... would not like that... one of the few jobs that might entice Kelly.

I'm sure this has probably been discussed but how long do you guys see BK staying at ND? I think if he is still on the sidelines in 2016 we will be lucky.

I think it really depends on how things are going on the field and what he has accomplished. That's a tough question.

God, who knows. Another 8 win season and his seat might start to get warm. Win 12 and the NFL might come calling again. He could throw up his hands at some of the institutional barriers, and jump. Or Swarbrick gets hired away and a new AD wants a change. So many variables. But it sure looks like he'll be back in 2014, so at least there's that.
If he's still here in 2016 that'll be seven years, which incredibly is on the long side of the spectrum for a major-program job anymore. That's something.

I never thought about it like that. Maybe we are lucky to be getting anything more then 5.

No coach has lasted more than ten years at ND... Correct??

Word on Philbin is he saved his job by firing Mike Sherman...who also happens to be his best friend.

Of course that was a day or two before Ireland got shitcanned.

I'd think Philbin gets 1 more year, and the new GM decides he either likes him and keeps him, or brings his own coach in.

All the big dogs were there longer than 10-- Knute, Leahy, Ara, and Lou

you're right i guess on Rock, but off memory wasn't Knute the only coach to last longer than ten or so years?? Pretty sure

If they're hiring him, then it sounds like they need him just as bad.

Knute- 13, and the other 3- 11. I believe.

Ara and Leahy both coached for 9 years. Ara coached 64-74, but retired in 74 before the season started. Leahy was coach from 41-43, then 46-53. He retired early in 1953.

I can still tell you exactly where I was when I heard Ara announced his retirement. I can without embarrassment tell you I had a few tears roll down my cheeks that day. That was also the day my wife realized how much Notre Dame meant to me and decided to become an Irish fan as well.

Louisville is in a pretty curious spot. They spend millions on their football program to bring it up to somewhat of a national program, then lose Strong. The AD at Louisville is apparently not a fan of Petrino according to some reports, but the fans and the big money donors are. Sounds like the AD is going to lose out on this one.

Leahy, Parseghian, and Holtz all coached eleven seasons.

The only coach to not win a national title and last longer than five years was Elmer Layden (34-40).
