They should've rented him for one more year under the franchise tag, if they were going to spend that cash.

I tend to think they've stabilized the offense now. Whenever Cutler gets time, he's pretty darn good. And the O-Line is finally looking like it belongs in the NFL.

If Emery can do for the defense what he did for the offense, the future is very bright.

Judging by the Shea McClellin pick... I'm not bullish on that possibility.

Got to have money to pay the defense. The defense needs a pure overhaul, I can only think of 5 players on the defense I'd keep if I were the GM.

Edit: not sure how the irish fam quote got in there

Sure. That's going to be the key. Peppers contract will be interesting.

Here's why I'm ok with keeping Jay for the next 3 years (guaranteed):

Bostic has promise and Williams was a good signing...

No arguments there. I was mad at the McClellin pick at the time (wanted David DeCastro or Chandler Jones if they just had to go DE... always saw McClellin as a 3rd down player and a guy who was a reach to boot) and I won't stop harping on that one until Emery wins me over.

This sucks. should have used franchise tag to buy another year at worst. WAY too much money for Cutler who I don't think will ever be an elite NFL QB.

Don't underestimate Trestman. His brain with Cutler's skills...pretty fun to think about.

You are right, a new brain for Cutler would solve a lot of problems. Find someone younger, cheaper and with better intangibles to groom under Trestman if you think he is that great. Blowing 1/6th of your payroll on an inconsistent flake isn't the answer IMO.

I think there's a reason that he's been so inconsistent...actually, a couple. The O-Line has been a disaster and Lovie, not a great offensive mind, kept changing coordinators (Mike Tice? Seriously?)

Whatever I guess. This "brain" has been around forever, but we picked him up from the CFL. Not a fan of Jay the player; we're talking about a QB who's played in only 1.5 playoff games. A lot of my angst is with the contract though. Either way, the Bears front office suck at their jobs, imo.

I'm a lifelong Bears fan, and I have no problems with this signing. There weren't any better options out there. The Bears offense is built to win now. No sense in wasting Marshall, Bennet, and Jeffery on a young, inexperienced QB.

It's a 7-year deal only in name. Jay did that to help the Bears with the salary cap so that they could improve the defense.

After years of seeing Moses Moreno, Craig Krenzel, etc., I'm absolutely OK with this.

I think you've nailed it (don't forget Forte). That said, we could be proven very wrong if the defense doesn't get better.

I can't believe people aren't excited about this. Vag McCaskey just opened her coin purse, and that's a good thing!

The offense has some very nice pieces moving forward (for the first time ever really). The defense aged in dog years, so shoring that up through the draft and FA should put the Bears in a good spot moving forward.

Call me crazy (as I'm sure most will), but I'm optimistic about this team, and that doesn't happen very often.

El oh el at the Bears fans lamenting this move. Try wandering the QB desert with Ponder/Cassel/Freeman for a while and you'll appreciate what you have real quick.

Don't forget the Culpepper experiment and the AARP excursion with a twice retired Favre ...

I agree, this should allow the team to focus on there defensive needs through FA and the draft. Hopefully we take a S or DT with our 1st pick.

You serious, Dick??!!

C-Pepp had one amazing season, and a couple other really good ones.

Favre got them to within one play, literally, of the Super Bowl.

Forgive us others for not crying about that.

I'll gladly trade Billy Volek, Vince Young, Matt Hasslebeck, Rusty Smith, Jake Locker, and Ryan Fitzpatrick for such misery.

The three are comparable, and as of right now that assessment is accurate.

*Staff looked like he may jump to the next tier this season, then had a horrible second half, fitting behavior from one of that trio.
