I'm wondering if the staff is hedging against not getting Quick.

I mean, based on what we've learned tonight, do we think that if Quick committed tomorrow, there would still be a spot for McKenzie/Nelson?

I think that would depend. I think they'd wait to hear from the 3 defensive studs left.

McK has a committable offer if their are spots available AFTER he qualifies. Nelson is not being pushed, it sounds like.

If Mackenzie will know his scores next week, it makes sense to slow play Nelson, who's a fairly new offer anyway. You'd prefer McKenzie and spots are getting tight.
If they lose both in that process, it'll be OK. Neither are walk-in-the-door studs and we're pretty well stocked at receiver. Plus we're still very much in on Quick, who's better than either of them.
This doesn't seem that complicated.

IM might be a walk in the door stud on special teams, which is an area we need studs.
Hoping the coaching shake up puts a new focus on STs. I thought this year would be a huge positive jump, but nothing special IMO.

From Ms. Hickey:

Notre Dame hosted 2014 wide receiver Charles Nelson of Daytona Beach (Fla.) Seabreeze this weekend. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound slot man said he enjoyed his visit to South Bend.

"The visit went pretty well," Nelson said. "Notre Dame is definitely something different. It has a different atmosphere than anything you'll find in Florida. And, it's a lot colder."

Nelson said his favorite part of Notre Dame was the campus layout.
"I like how Notre Dame is kind of on its own," Nelson said. "I don't think you'll find too many negative distractions there because there's not too much around there besides the school."

On Saturday night, Nelson took in Notre Dame's end-of-season banquet.
"The banquet was fun," Nelson said. "It was really different and not what I was expecting. Usually at banquets, you eat dinner and then the coach honors a few players. This banquet was almost like a show, it's hard to explain. But, I enjoyed myself."

"I mainly spoke with Coach Booker," Nelson said. "He explained to me how I could fit into their program and what type of opportunities I would have at Notre Dame. I told him that I really liked Notre Dame, but that it would be hard for me to make a decision without seeing a couple other schools."

Nelson admitted he has some thinking to do, considering his position may be full by the time he finishes up his official visits to other schools.

"The coaches also told me that they are taking one more wide receiver, and that I'm one of three guys they are still recruiting at the position."

Nelson has a top two of Notre Dame and USC, and he's received interest from Oregon within the past week.

"It's mainly Notre Dame and USC right now," Nelson said. "Florida has kind of dropped off. Oregon is starting to show interest, and they really like my film and want to come see me in January."

Nelson has visits planned to USC (Jan. 17) and West Virginia (Jan. 24).

Im not saying he's a bad recruit but we have 3 scholarships right now and I just feel like we are going to get some better recruits.

I still agree that unless we don't get Quick, we don't need him. I'm just comparing him to McKenzie, a player who's best offer besides ND is West Virginia

Not sure why that is, but I still like McKenzie much more. The guy just has that make you miss ability due to his quickness and lateral speed. I just hope IM got his test grade up. If we can fix our return protection a bit, we can make one of our weaknesses to a huge strength.

I also think Nelson can help there too. If you look at Janarion Grant who I compared him to, he had 2 TDs (one on PR/one KR) in his true freshman year this year. I feel either can have similar impacts.

From Ms. Hickey:

This is different from the previous posts where he didn't look or sound too excited. Just going off an even earlier post where someone mentioned he was starting to like all of the attention, I'm wondering if he's getting his feelings hurt because he wasn't the center of attention while he was here?

With his dad later saying he had a good visit, I have a feeling dad is trying to do a little damage control.

Just my own opinion.

NDPhilly - I think some of those schools are looking at him for CB. They see something in him but maybe not what ND is seeing.

If it truly is 3 wr for 1 spot and that list includes any variation of Nelson, McKenzie, Lazard, Brown, Quick. It is Quick every time. After that I would honestly hope to fill it with a position of bigger need first.

Per ISD, they think our chances with Nelson are very slim. They say he hated the cold weather. So I'll stick with my early prediction of USC for him... and hopefully he doesn't turn out to be a baller.

So weird that ISD is saying that and Wiltfong's source is saying Nelson could commit sometime in the next few days.

Good luck at the next level if college works out.

Did Wiltfong actually say to which team Nelson could commit to? If not, his statement and ISD might not contradict.

Sounds like another case where 24/7's source is a different individual than ISD's source. Both probably think they are right, we will see which actually is ultimately accurate probably within the next week or 2 (believe IM gets his test scores the 23rd)

Yeah, Wiltfong was clearly talking about Nelson committing to ND.

But, to be fair, he didn't say it was certain to happen. He said he "wouldn't be surprised" if Nelson committed this week, but that was "not a prediction."

Correct. We're a week away from knowing whether or not McKenzie is a take.

Simply put, if Nelson takes his OV to USC I expect him to like it a lot more than ND and sign there. The reason he'd seemed such an ND lean is that we were basically the first in on him after this senior season. He's since garnered more and more interest from other programs and I expect him to sign somewhere with a more mild winter if he has the option.

Yes, I can't see how even Wiltfong would know beforehand that Nelson did not like cold weather, if in fact, that is what he did not like about his visit.

In Loy's update Nelson says the weather actually wasn't as bad as he thought it would be and really enjoyed the visit. His dad (who is a big FSU fan) joined him and he hated the cold and snow but liked the tradition and everything else. Wants to take his other officials before deciding.

Sounds like ISD's source is either Nelson's dad or someone close to him.

Loy added that Nelson better commit soon if he's gonna commit, or his spot will be gone.

He also said that he expects our next commit to be Nyles Morgan on Jan. 4 at the Army All-American game.

So I guess he doesn't expect Nelson to end up in the class.

If Nelson doesn't end up in this class because of the bolded. That would be a good thing for ND.

Saw that Nelson received a pot of gold. Does he have a timeline for committing?

Or any other updates from Loy's post?

Still wants to visit USC, Oregon and West Virginia. I think if USC doesn't have a spot for him we have a real shot but I could also see Oregon as a real threat.

He loved the Pot of Gold but he's got to take a few more visits (USC, Oregon, WVU) before committing. He doesn't feel ready to decide because, as much as he loved his ND trip, he has nothing to compare it with right now.

Loy has been saying for a while that he doesn't think we will have a spot for Nelson by the time he is ready to decide.

no spot has to be a good thing. it isnt like we have scrubs left on the board. i am very so/so on adding Nelson. if he picks nd right on if not that's OK. and maybe that is because we (read nd's offense) haven't shown the ability to utilize this kind of weapon yet.

Toma was least athletic (imo) we've had but most widely used. he was also not one of Kelly's kids so not sure what to think.

That would be my guess. USC and ND won't have spots and he fits in perfectly in what they want to do.
