Size-Strength-Range
Sykes is playing out of position as a three-point defensive end. His size, athleticism and playing strength are conducive to the outside linebacker spot at the BCS level of play. Shows very good playing speed with outstanding sideline-to-sideline range.
Instincts/Take On Skills
Is extremely quick getting off the mark, demonstrating very good key and diagnosis reaction skills. Uses his quick hands very well to shiver and shed blockers. Doesn't get stuck on blocks, showing the quickness and agility needed to avoid and make plays in tight spaces. Demonstrates the ability to play off blocks, keep his feet free and flatten down the line. With added bulk his upper body playing strength will improve over time.
Tackling
This guy is a tough customer capable of punishing ball carriers. For the most part we see a strong wrap tackler who can still improve his ability to balance up in space.
3rd Down Capabilities
Pass coverage skills is an area that most likely will take some time to develop. His primary responsibility is as a pass rusher. The ability to run and change direction in space indicates both zone and man coverage potential. He is very effective as an edge rusher. Gets off the mark and up the field, demonstrating the quickness and burst needed to apply immediate pressure off the edge. Combines his hand quickness with an outstanding inside change up arm over move. Displays a very good closing burst to the quarterback.
Bottom Line
Sykes may need a redshirt year adjusting to the outside linebacker position, but once the skill level is established, we see a prospect capable of having a long and productive career at the BCS level of competition.

Two LB's in one day and I missed it? Damn pro football. Welcome Nile and Colin!

It’s like the freaking Twilight Zone isn’t it??? My ND fan ptsd is needing at least one of them to flip to Florida to make everything seem ‘normal’…

:)

Really impressive stuff from the staff...

He is very well spoken and humble on this ISD Power Hour. BK is not only recruiting talented kids, but those that are great human beings as well. Really easy guys to root for.

I'll second this, I was pleasantly surprised at how well spoken he was.

After watching his tape I see him as a special teams player and not much more. And there is nothing wrong with that. Hopefully I'm wrong and he can be a big time contributor.

Wow, I respect your right have your own opinion, but I had a completely different take. He's fast, good in pursuit, covers the pass well, and has the weight/striking power to plug holes. I see him as a really solid LB prospect. Add that to the recent news of him outperforming Morgan and Garrett this past season, and I feel good about him finding a home in our front 7.

I like your insight. I hope you're right.

Serious question, if that gold has value (or the trading cards or whatever was in the envelopes)... how is that not a recruiting violation? I know you can give away swag but where is the line drawn?

Everything has value, so there is obviously de minimis exception. A stroke of paint with some gold leaf in it is not very valuable.

Unless you have 477 of them!

Let's see, you scrape the paint off of 477 cards, heat it up to separate the gold from the paint, then.............aw never mind too much hassle.

ND should send recruits solid goal tablets and JR Sandlin can chisel #blockofgold on them

Sykes Meets BVG

BVG went by and saw Sykes and made a big impression with him. They see him at the Will position and they're trying to get him on campus for big weeks on the 24th and 31st.

Interesting. He doesn't seem like a high risk for a decommitment at all, so why the push to get him on campus?

I wonder if we're going to have a couple surprise visitors on those days and the staff wants some commits around for?
