I'd say that tight ends are very important in our offense. We just take them for granted because we've had an NFL caliber tight end(s) for the last 10 years

Not only is the TE important in ND's offense but it's becoming more and more important then ever in today's football as the pass catching TE's are a mismatch for all positions.

BTW whether ND takes 1, 2 or 3 TE's in this class it's highly doubtful that any would play next season anyway.

IMO Welch is done.

Next season it will once again be the Niklas and Koyak show with Smythe being the next man in for either one of them as he is suited to play as a traditional inline TE or be a Flex TE that's moving all over the field.

Heuerman would be the the 4th TE on the depth chart.

I wouldn't rule out Heuerman getting a look at LB next year ...no info just a hunch

I would assume he is not lds, he eliminated BYU almost immediately. I've lived in Utah most of my life and i am not lds, not everyone in utah is mormon.

I can't find confirmation either way but the message board consensus seems to be that he's either not Mormon or at least not active in the Church ...

Dalton Schultz @Bingham...#1 TE HS prospect...BYU? (COUGZ) - CougarBoard.com
'14 UT (Utah) TE Dalton Schultz. - VolNation

In non-Mormon news, the following article confirms why I want him bad. Former OL who considers his blocking the best part of his game. Would be a great asset for us in the Niklas role. Per his OC:

"His blocking is what makes him the No. 1 recruit," he said. "The tight end position in football nowadays is kind of a lost art. We are ruthless about doing our part."

So if Luatua is strictly a TE, and we have Weishar and still pursuing Schultz then we are clearly emulating the Stanford model where every position on the field is occupied by a TE.

Only on offense, GITF. On defense every position is occupied by a CAT. We are going to the all-TE offense and the all-CAT defense. It makes recruiting much simpler.

Not that it matters too much but since I have time I looked it up.....Where he is located in South Jordan, Utah it is a 59% LDS to 8% Catholic split.... with 26% non religious.

I would assume that he isn't LDS if Utah and not BYU are being considered. Thats somewhat of a stereotype but I have several clients in Utah and the ones are LDS root for BYU and the ones that aren't root for Utah, with no exceptions.

This could be a sick pull if it actually happens. Not only stealing him from Stanford, but landing two dominant TE prospects. I truly believe Schultz is the unequivocal #1 guy in this class. Do we have room for everyone on the train? That's my only question.

Could we land Schultz, Luatua and Weishar? And BK asking Welch to stay another year, Jesus!

All aboard, bring them!!! Awesome stuff. Luatua, should he be Irish, can play linebacker. Even better, line the two studs on opposite sides of the field...let Barnett decide which one to throw to.

We will have to invent a whole new offense for all these TEs.

I didn't know he was on campus.

I've been selling stock on Luatua simply because poor camp showing + drop in ratings = overrated to begin with IMO. But then I watched the game film of both Luatua and Schultz, and I thought Luatua's film was really good. He reminded me of Funchess but a better blocker. Runs hard and very tough to take down after the catch IMO.

Schultz's film is limited, but one thing I noticed is it looks like he has really short arms for his size. Did you notice that? That concerned me.

Anyways, what the hell is going on here then? Is Schultz the staff's #1? Is that why Luatua has been told to hold off or is he actually doing it on his own?

Makes ZERO sense to take Luatua and Schultz (ironman recently reported that Luatua is being recruited as a TE only).

Take them both, figure it out later is what I think. Luatua is versatile from what I've read.

Did you read the part where he's being recruited as a TE only? That means to me that he's not moving positions, and Schultz certainly isn't. Add that to two TEs from last year plus Weishar. Adding two more in this class wouldn't be smart.

I wonder if Luatua holding out is because the staff has told him he's their #2, wait to see what Schultz says on his visit? IDK. It's possible.

I'm going with the coaches knowing what they are doing vs a message board poster.

Who cares is what I'm saying. Sign him up, figure it out later. Troy Niklas.

You're second statement is valid. I hope not, but very possible I think.
