Listened to a local podcast and one guy said that he had talked to Drue and he told him that he's at 212 lbs right now. Told him that if he shows up at ND at 225 or under he will start out at safety. He shows up at ND greater than 225 he starts out at linebacker.

That's what Drue said the staff is telling him, that 225 is the benchmark? Just want to make sure I understand correctly.

I'm a little skeptical to believe there is a literal weight benchmark from Kelly and staff. If there is one, Drue could essentially manipulate the benchmark to his personal preference.

Here's an article that specifically talks about the weight aspect. Looks like the guys on the podcast probably took the same information and recalled something slightly different. Doesn't look like it's a hard figure by any means.
Drue Tranquill wants to help Notre Dame where he can | The Journal Gazette

Drue Tranquill will arrive at Notre Dame as a defensive athlete, and possibly a few pounds heavier.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Carroll linebacker announced that he had de-committed from Purdue and joined Notre Dame's 2014 recruiting class Tuesday.

He could play safety or linebacker at Notre Dame, which had originally pegged him to play inside linebacker in college.

"It's going to be where ever I can make the best impact early," Tranquill said of what position he could play for the Irish. "I think it is going to where ever I naturally build into. If my frame is 215 coming in, I will probably start back at safety. If I'm 220, 225, strong and I'm ready to move down to linebacker, I will probably start there."

Tranquill had 75 tackles with 16 for loss, four sacks and an interception this season. He also ran for 1,420 yards with 28 touchdowns and had 16 receptions for 348 yards with five touchdowns.

He said he will not modify his workouts to add weight to play linebacker or stay near where he is at now to play safety.

"I'm just going to continue with my natural progressions," Tranquill said. "Over the past two or three years, I've consistently put on 15 to 20 pounds each offseason. I would assume based on that I would probably be around 220, 225. I'm going to let my body naturally grow into it and not focus too much on my weight.

"I want to maintain that speed aspect, focus on my change of direction and different things like that. Size is becoming less important in the game with more speed with the spread offenses. I'm going to continue to focus on that speed aspect and let the size take care of itself."

The marching orders were probably to eat and lift like crazy and see what your body does.

My guess is Drue is the kind of kid that listens to his coaches.

Also, it is pretty tempting for a young man to see how gigantic he can get--especially if you are not a lineman.

I think you are right, and the bolded is a great point. The staff probably won't have to motivate him too hard to bulk up. Bulking up is fun for a young athlete excited about starting his college career.

Yeah, going to the beach as a 220 lb. 19 yo with an ND scholarship is probably quite an ego-boosting experience.

I agree. It's probably more of a guideline. The staff wouldn't be so blinded by measurements to say if this player is this size he can only play XXX position.

No the staff definitely has a profile, Big skill, skill and big. The difference is that if he does not fit big skill at all than he would fall to skill in which he would play safety.

Great article posted by the small local paper that does a great job of covering Carroll High School sports and other local news in the area. The writer, Ryan Schwab, does an absolutely tremendous job. Because of that, I think he got Drue to open up more about a few things and what you get is a much more personal article. Below is a small blurb of the article. Click on the link to read the rest of the article. Even if you don't want to read the article, if you could please click on the link and throw the writer a "few bones". Thanks.
Carroll's Tranquill picks Notre Dame

Tranquill understands and is prepared to move forward with the "decommittment" tag associated with his name.

"What made the process so difficult for me is that I am going to be labeled as a kid who decommitted. For me, I am a people pleasing kind of person and didn't want to disappoint someone in the end. That is why it took me so long. I had to realize that I couldn't please everyone in life and that I had to make the best decision for myself," he said.

Sounds like a great guy. Reports were saying he is a great leader as well on his team, the kind of guy you want as a captain. I truly think he weighed his options and has settled on the choice he believes is best for him. I dont see him decommitting unless something to the extent of a scandal happens at ND.

Quote from article: "Tranquill plans to double-major in Business-Entrepreneurship and Technical Engineering."

Good luck with that one, buddy. Admire the boldness though. I would love it if every ND recruit came in with those kinds of goals.
